Sexually Dimorphic Visual Processing in the Yellow-Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Flying insects process motion across the visual scene to regulate their ground speed, correct course deviations, and respond to behaviorally relevant stimuli such as avoiding predators or finding hosts. The yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti provides a useful model for studying these visually guided behaviors, as both sexes use vision to track moving features. Approaching a moving target presents mosquitoes with a demanding visual problem: they must extract target motion from the changing visual scene while simultaneously controlling their own flight and responding to potentially dangerous mo

Yellow fever virus resurgence in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, 2024-2025.

We report the detection of yellow fever virus in Campinas and Ribeirao Preto city areas (two geographic areas within Sao Paulo State, Brazil) from September 2024 to February 2025. Phylogenetic analysis of six new genomes showed a re-introduction in 2022 from Midwest Brazil followed by persistence in Sao Paulo State. Continued surveillance in neotropical primates is required to prevent cases in humans.

Yellow fever outbreak temporarily changes dispersal patterns in an endangered primate.

Disease outbreaks can severely affect populations in the wild. However, their consequences on individual social behaviour and population demography are poorly understood. We used a multi-site capture-recapture model to investigate the impacts of a yellow fever outbreak on the endangered golden lion tamarin Leontopithecus rosalia, in the fragmented Atlantic forest, Brazil. Annual adult survival rate severely declined in 2017-2018, coinciding with the outbreak period. Simultaneously, dispersal patterns changed temporarily, with a reduction of settlement time for individuals dispersing within the…

[Yellow Fever Vaccine-Associated Viscerotropic Disease: A Case Report From Türkiye].

The yellow fever vaccine containing the live attenuated 17D strain is one of the most effective methods for preventing yellow fever infection and has long been considered safe. However, rare but serious adverse events such as yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD) have been reported. YELAVD is a life-threatening clinical condition that can mimic wild-type yellow fever infection, is associated with a high risk of mortality, and may pose diagnostic challenges, particularly in non-endemic regions. A 57-year-old male patient with no underlying comorbidities, history of imm…

Neutralization Tests for Quantification of Specific Antibodies Against Yellow Fever Virus.

The plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) is considered the reference for the analysis of humoral immune response to infection and to vaccination against the yellow fever virus, showing superior accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) to the other serological tests. The micro-PRNT version (in 96-well plates) is more operational and has a higher sample throughput than the classic PRNT run in 6-well plates. Here we described both methods to quantify yellow fever neutralizing antibodies.

Automation on the Plate Analysis from Yellow Fever Serum Neutralization Assays.

In the yellow fever studies, methods to quantify neutralizing antibodies are crucial and contribute to the development and evaluation of new antiviral vaccines effectiveness. The assay most commonly used for this purpose is the Plaque-Reduction Neutralization Test (PRNT), but this assay is time-consuming, not amenable to a large number of samples, and difficult to adapt to a high throughput routine. PRNT variations like FRNT and microFRNT were designed to mitigate these bottlenecks, but also tend to have large variations among different analysts due to visual plaque recognition and manual coun…

Circulation of yellow fever virus in Benin city, Edo state Nigeria.

Yellow fever (YF) is one of the most acute viral hemorrhagic diseases of the 18th and 19th centuries, which continues to cause severe morbidity and mortality in Africa. After 21 years of no reported cases of yellow fever in Nigeria, till 2017 where a case was confirmed in Kwara State, also in November 2018,WHO was informed of a cluster of suspected yellow fever cases and deaths in Edo state, Nigeria. The study was among all age group attending health centres in Benin City, Edo state. A total of 280 blood samples were collected from consented febrile patients and were screened for antibodies to…

Enhanced production of yellow fever virus through tailored culture media optimization.

In the present study, an initial screening was conducted using 12 types of cell culture media, and four media with the best performance were selected for further study. The optimization of four media blend for YFV production was evaluated using an Augmented simplex centroid mixture design. Among all the different models that were investigated, the quadratic model was found to be the most appropriate model for exploring mixture design. It was found that M10 exhibited the greatest impact on YFV production, followed by M9, M4, and M1. The utilization of M1 and M4 media individually yielded higher

Yellow fever in Ghana: Predicting emergence and ecology from historical outbreaks.

Understanding the epidemiology and ecology of yellow fever in endemic regions is critical for preventing future outbreaks. Ghana is a high-risk country for yellow fever. In this study we estimate the disease burden, ecological cycles, and areas at risk for yellow fever in Ghana based on historical outbreaks. We identify 2387 cases and 888 deaths (case fatality rate 37.7%) from yellow fever reported in Ghana from 1910 to 2022. During the approximately 30-year periods before and after implementation of routine childhood vaccination in 1992, the reported mean annual number of cases decreased by 8…

Long-Term Immunity after Vaccination against Yellow Fever in Korean Travelers.

Although a live-attenuated yellow fever (YF) vaccine is known to elicit durable immunity, antibody titers may wane after vaccination. This study evaluated long-term immunity after vaccination against YF among individuals who resided in Korea and were vaccinated with YF virus- 17D prior to international travel. Serum was collected between December 2018 and December 2019 at the National Medical Center, Republic of Korea, from YF vaccine recipients who had been vaccinated for more than five years prior to sample collection. Long-term immunity against YF was assessed using three serological assays…
