Is CMV PCR of inner ear fluid during cochlear implantation a way to diagnose CMV-related hearing loss?

UNLABELLED: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of cytomegalovirus (CMV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on inner ear fluid collected during cochlear implantation and to assess its interest in current practice. This monocentric prospective study included consecutive children presenting with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) who were candidates for unilateral and/or bilateral cochlear implantation. The etiology of the SNHL was determined before cochlear implantation when possible. During the surgery, drop-like samples of inner ear fluid and blood were collected. CMV PCR wa

Nerve-associated Schwann cell precursors contribute extracutaneous melanocytes to the heart, inner ear, supraorbital locations and brain meninges.

Melanocytes are pigmented cells residing mostly in the skin and hair follicles of vertebrates, where they contribute to colouration and protection against UV-B radiation. However, the spectrum of their functions reaches far beyond that. For instance, these pigment-producing cells are found inside the inner ear, where they contribute to the hearing function, and in the heart, where they are involved in the electrical conductivity and support the stiffness of cardiac valves. The embryonic origin of such extracutaneous melanocytes is not clear. We took advantage of lineage-tracing experiments com

Efficiency of Fat Suppression in T1-Weighted Inner Ear Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Multipoint Dixon Method Versus Hybrid Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone is a region where fat suppression is difficult due to the inhomogeneity of various structures with different molecular properties. INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the most effective fat suppression sequence in order to increase the visibility of the inner ear region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hybrid techniques and T1-Weighted mDIXON images of 40 patients with Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging of the inner ear were prospectively compared by two experienced radiologists in terms of fat suppression efficacy. In all fat-suppressed sequences, the Signal to Noise Ratio

Evidence for a dynorphin-mediated inner ear immune/inflammatory response and glutamate-induced neural excitotoxicity: an updated analysis.

Acoustic overstimulation (AOS) is defined as the stressful overexposure to high-intensity sounds. AOS is a precipitating factor that leads to a glutamate (GLU)-induced Type I auditory neural excitotoxicity and an activation of an immune/inflammatory/oxidative stress response within the inner ear, often resulting in cochlear hearing loss. The dendrites of the Type I auditory neural neurons that innervate the inner hair cells (IHCs), and respond to the IHC release of the excitatory neurotransmitter GLU, are themselves directly innervated by the dynorphin (DYN)-bearing axon terminals of the desce

Inner ear manifestations in CHARGE: Abnormalities, treatments, animal models, and progress toward treatments in auditory and vestibular structures.

The inner ear contains the sensory organs for hearing and balance. Both hearing and balance are commonly affected in individuals with CHARGE syndrome (CS), an autosomal dominant condition caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in the CHD7 gene. Semicircular canal dysplasia or aplasia is the single most prevalent feature in individuals with CHARGE leading to deficient gross motor skills and ambulation. Identification of CHD7 as the major gene affected in CHARGE has enabled acceleration of research in this field. Great progress has been made in understanding the role of CHD7 in the developme

Morphological correlation between caloric tests and vestibular hydrops in Ménière's disease using intravenous Gd enhanced inner ear MRI.

The purpose of this study was to prove the hypothesis that caloric response in Ménière's disease (MD) is reduced by hydropic expansion of the vestibular labyrinth, not by vestibular hypofunction, by evaluating the correlation morphologically using an intravenous Gadolinium (IV-Gd) inner ear MRI. In study I, the prevalence of abnormal video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) results among the patients with definite unilateral MD (n = 24) and vestibular neuritis (VN) (n = 22) were investigated. All patients showed abnormal canal paresis (CP) (> 26%) on caloric tests. The prevalence of abnormal vHIT in pat

Genetic variants associated with motion sickness point to roles for inner ear development, neurological processes and glucose homeostasis.

Roughly one in three individuals is highly susceptible to motion sickness and yet the underlying causes of this condition are not well understood. Despite high heritability, no associated genetic factors have been discovered. Here, we conducted the first genome-wide association study on motion sickness in 80 494 individuals from the 23andMe database who were surveyed about car sickness. Thirty-five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were associated with motion sickness at a genome-wide-significant level (P < 5 × 10(-8)). Many of these SNPs are near genes involved in balance, and eye, ear a

Sensory organ generation in the chicken inner ear: contributions of bone morphogenetic protein 4, serrate1, and lunatic fringe.

The chicken inner ear is a remarkably complex structure consisting of eight morphologically distinct sensory organs. Unraveling how these sensory organs are specified during development is key to understanding how such a complex structure is generated. Previously, we have shown that each sensory organ in the chicken inner ear arises independently in the rudimentary otocyst based on Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (Bmp4) expression. Here, we compare the expression of Bmp4 with two other putative sensory organ markers, Lunatic Fringe (L-fng) and chicken Serrate1 (Ser1), both of which are components

Endolymphatic duct/sac enhancement on gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear: preliminary observations and case reports.

Twelve patients with auditory and/or vestibular symptoms were examined with a gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-MRI) study. They all were found to have enhancement of only the endolymphatic duct/sac structures of the inner ear. Most of these findings were unilateral, but a few were bilateral. The patients underwent auditory, vestibular, and blood tests in an attempt to clarify the reason for this abnormal enhancement. Several specific etiologies were identified, but several cases had unknown causes. In this article we review the concept of inflammation of the inner ear structures with

Comparative analysis of patch lesions in the chick inner ear following acoustic trauma: optical versus scanning electron microscopy.

Neonatal chicks were exposed to an octave band noise with a center frequency of 1.5 kHz at 116 dB SPL for 4 hours. Seven days following overstimulation, the birds were sacrificed. Their basilar papillae were removed, fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde, and processed in two steps. First, the ears were immunostained with a supernatant of mouse anti-tectorial membrane antibodies, followed by a diaminobenzidine process. Examinations of the papillae under an optical stereo microscope revealed a patch site with a partially regenerated tectorial membrane (referred to as the honeycomb). After the optical st

Some functional and morphologic correlates in inner ear pathologies: first observations using electrically evoked/pure tone derived potentials.

After reviewing a typical example of functional and morphologic correlations in a cochlear and vestibular comparative study of three aminoglycosidic antibiotics and discussing clinical and experimental observations in Menière's disease and experimental endolymphatic hydrops, some difficulties in studying morphofunctional correlations are discussed. A particular electrophysiologic method, based on electrical stimulation of the ear and acoustic masking, notably with continuous pure tones, is illustrated in normal and pathologic experimental conditions in the guinea pig. This method, which allows

Impact of age and sensorineural hearing loss on sound transmission to the inner ear based on analysis of air-bone gaps.

Air-bone gaps (ABGs) provide a clinical marker of middle ear transmission efficiency, yet their dependence on age and sensorineural hearing loss remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed 24,570 audiograms (13,417 patients, 4-102 years) collected at three Swedish audiology clinics between 2018 and 2019, excluding ears with evidence of conductive pathology. ABGs were computed from pure-tone air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC) thresholds at 250-4000 Hz. Mean ABGs deviated significantly from 0 dB at all six test frequencies, with clinically relevant differences at 250, 1000, 3000, and

Auditory mechanics in the grig (Cyphoderris monstrosa): tympanal travelling waves and frequency discrimination as a precursor to inner ear tonotopy.

Ensiferan orthopterans offer a key study system for acoustic communication and the process of insect hearing. Cyphoderris monstrosa (Hagloidea) belongs to a relict ensiferan family and is often used for evolutionary comparisons between bushcrickets (Tettigoniidae) and their ancestors. Understanding how this species processes sound is therefore vital to reconstructing the evolutionary history of ensiferan hearing. Previous investigations have found a mismatch in the ear of this species, whereby neurophysiological and tympanal tuning does not match the conspecific communication frequency. Howeve
