Retained pieces of wood in the retromaxillary space: a case report.

Detection and operative removal of wood as a foreign body in the cranio-maxillary area has received frequent attention in the literature. However, as a rule, most of the cases described are related to the orbit or the orbito-neurocranial space. Almost no literature exists on the detection and treatment of wooden foreign bodies in the retromaxillary space. The authors present an unusual case of long-term retained wood in this area in a child. The case inspires discussion of the general problem of detecting retained retromaxillary wood, even using modern diagnostic tools in this area and the que

Recurrent Epistaxis and Unilateral Intranasal Mass in A Teenager.

BACKGROUND Epistaxis in children is a common problem encountered in outpatient clinics and emergency departments. A wide variety of conditions may cause recurrent epistaxis in children. We describe clinical, radiologic, and histologic features of a lobular capillary hemangioma presenting as a rapidly growing intranasal mass in a child with recurrent epistaxis. CASE REPORT A 16-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of recurrent unilateral epistaxis requiring multiple visits to the emergency department. The child had nasal obstruction, snoring, no recurrent sinus infections, no anosmia

Intravascular Lobular Capillary Hemangioma in the Corpus Spongiosum.

Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) or pyogenic granuloma is a very common benign vascular tumor. However, its etiology still remains unknown. This tumor classically arises from epithelium-lined tissue, such as skin and mucosa, but subcutaneous and intravenous variants have also been described. Intravenous LCH usually arises within the lumen of large caliber veins, but other intravascular examples have been reported in association with vascular malformations, namely port-wine stains and arteriovenous fistulas. A 54-year-old man presented after the sudden appearance of a subcutaneous nodule on h

Rapidly progressive orbital intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia in a newborn.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also known as "vegetant intravascular haemangioendothelioma", is a rare benign proliferation of vascular endothelial cells secondary to intravascular thrombosis and thrombus organisation. It can develop from vascular lesions such as haemangiomas, pyogenic granulomas or varicose veins. This vascular tumour of the skin and subcutaneous tissue may exhibit rapid and progressive growth, and is usually located in the neck or head. Ocular presentation is unusual and orbital involvement is even rarer. We report a case of a preterm newborn male wi

Rapidly progressive angiomatous epulis: How to differentiate a benign gingival lesion from malignancy?

Angiomatous epulis, also known as vascular epulis or gingival pyogenic granuloma, is a benign reactive gingival lesion characterized by marked capillary proliferation. It typically develops in response to chronic local irritation, trauma, inflammatory stimuli, or hormonal influences. Clinically, it presents as a rapidly growing erythematous to violaceous gingival mass with a marked tendency to bleed, which may mimic malignant gingival tumors and raise diagnostic concern. Although the diagnosis is primarily based on clinicopathological correlation, imaging plays an important complementary role.

Clinical, imaging and histopathological correlations of gingival overgrowth: a retrospective analysis in northeastern Romanian population.

BACKGROUND: Gingival overgrowth refers to an increase in the size of the gingival tissue. The etiology varies, and is often a multi-factor issue; what may contribute to gingival enlargement are aspects, such as disease, local and systemic conditions and idiopathic factors. The aim of the present study is to analyze and to correlate the clinical, epidemiological, imaging and histopathological (HP) features of gingival overgrowth in northeastern Romanian population. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a clinical, imaging, and pathological study on 98 patients with gingival overgrowth,

Vascular tumors in children.

Tumors with a vascular component are the most common masses seen in children. Malformations and hemangiomas predominate. Hemangiomas have a biphasic natural history consisting of initial proliferation followed by spontaneous involution; these tumors rarely require surgical intervention. Malformations present at birth or shortly after birth and have a wide spectrum of clinical presentations depending upon their predominant cell type and rheology. Physical examination and MR imaging will effectively define most of these anomalies. Surgery is reserved for very symptomatic lesions and is effective

[Pyogenic liver abscess and schistosomiasis mansoni in the state of Espírito Santo].

A possible association of the acute toxemic form of schistosomiasis and pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has been recently suggested. As in the west of the Espírito Santo state schistosomiasis is endemic and PLA are frequently diagnosed in the Children's Hospital of Vitória we reviewed the records of the Hospital during the period from May 1991 to April 1993 to: a) identify all cases of PLA in which Schistosoma mansoni infection was present and b) annotate the procedence of each case to verify if there is an association of the two diseases. 65 cases of PLA were recorded and 39 had the result of a

Prevalence of Histopathologic Types of Gingival Lesions in the Iranian Population: A 22-Year Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Gingiva is one of the supporting tissues around the teeth that can be affected by various neoplastic or nonneoplastic lesions. Previous studies have examined several types of gingival lesions, but the lack of a standardized classification system has hindered meaningful comparisons. Additionally, many studies focused primarily on reactive lesions. Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of gingival lesions by investigating their prevalence across age groups, genders, sites, and by their clinical presentation. This research could lead to improved diagnostic accuracy and tre

Osteopontin expression and clinicopathologic correlation of oral hyperplastic reactive lesions: An institutional 6-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reactive proliferations of oral cavity comprise pyogenic granuloma (PG), fibrous hyperplasia (FH), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), and peripheral giant-cell granuloma (PGCG). They often pose diagnostic challenges due to their overlapping clinical and histopathological features. This study was conducted to determine the frequency and clinicopathological correlation of reactive hyperplastic lesions in the oral cavity reported in our institute and compared it with other previous studies. Further evaluation of osteopontin (OPN) expression in normal gingival tissue and
