Development of revised ResNet-50 for diabetic retinopathy detection.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) produces bleeding, exudation, and new blood vessel formation conditions. DR can damage the retinal blood vessels and cause vision loss or even blindness. If DR is detected early, ophthalmologists can use lasers to create tiny burns around the retinal tears to inhibit bleeding and prevent the formation of new blood vessels, in order to prevent deterioration of the disease. The rapid improvement of deep learning has made image recognition an effective technology; it can avoid misjudgments caused by different doctors' evaluations and help doctors to predict t

Who needs to be screened for primary aldosteronism?

The prevalence of patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) is about 5%-15% in hypertensive patients, and it is common cause of secondary hypertension in clinical practice. Two major causes of PA are noted, namely bilateral adrenal hyperplasia and aldosterone-producing adenoma, and the general diagnosis is based on three steps: (1) screening, (2) confirmatory testing, and (3) subtype differentiation (Figure 1). The recommendation for screening patients is at an increased risk of PA, here we focus on which patients should be screened for PA, not only according to well-established guidelines but

Community-based actions in consulates: a new paradigm for opportunities for systematic integration in Chagas disease detection.

Research has shown that multidimensional approaches to Chagas disease (CD), integrating its biomedical and psycho-socio-cultural components, are successful in enhancing early access to diagnosis, treatment and sustainable follow-up.For the first time, a consulate was selected for a community-based CD detection campaign. Two different strategies were designed, implemented and compared between 2021 and 2022 at the Consulate General of Bolivia and a reference health facility in Barcelona open to all Bolivians in Catalonia.Strategy 1 consisted in CD awareness-raising activities before referring th

Characteristics of Pediatric Patients With Celiac Disease Identified Due to an Affected First-Degree Family Member.

The incidence of celiac disease in first-degree relatives of affected individuals is higher than in the general population, yet the clinical characteristics of this unique subset of patients has not been well described. Through a retrospective review of patients seen in a tertiary care pediatric celiac disease clinic, we identified 49 patients diagnosed with celiac disease following screening due to an affected first-degree relative. Although 51% of patients screened due to an affected first-degree relative were asymptomatic, their disease histology was as severe as those screened for symptoms

Tuberculosis, focussed tools and the right schools: estimated impact and cost of a targeted student screening programme for tuberculosis infection.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends targeted screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among high-risk populations. Recent studies that evaluate targeted school-based programmes in low burden settings are scarce. AIMS: To evaluate a school screening programme for recently arrived migrant students from moderate and high tuberculosis (TB) burden countries and estimate (1) the number of cases of active TB that were prevented and (2) the cost per case of active TB prevented. METHODS: Students were screened with tuberculin skin tests (TST) at schools with a high mi

Factor Structure of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status in Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status is a commonly used neuropsychological screening tool that is useful in a Huntington's disease (HD) population given its relatively brief administration time and assessment of multiple cognitive domains. Although 5 index scores are calculated, this structure has not been universally supported in clinical samples, which have often found a two- and three-factor structure to be better fitting. This study explored the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status factor structure in a large HD sam

European Survey: Dysphagia Management in Patients with Neuromuscular Diseases.

Dysphagia is common in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs). Its management differs by country and clinical setting. The purpose of this study was to describe current practices in the management of dysphagia in NMDs across Europe. An online survey of sixteen questions was developed, including basic information on facilities, existence of a management protocol, availability of dedicated therapists, tools used during screening, assessment, treatment stages, and treatment strategies. The survey was rolled out to European healthcare facilities providing care for NMDs. A total of 140 facilit

[Importance of full-cycle management for diabetic retinopathy].

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), one of the chronic complications of diabetes, is a serious and irreversible blinding disease. It is difficult to detect in the early stage, to control in the progressive stage, to operate in the advanced stage of DR. Recently, the "14th Five-year plan" for National Eye Health proposed to "improve the management mode of chronic eye disease, and build a chronic disease management system". The project team used artificial intelligence technology based on cloud platform, joint outpatient service, virtual ward to explore the comprehensive management of DR from the aspects

Automatic mental health identification method based on natural gait pattern.

Mental health has become a global problem, as over 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression and 200 million from anxiety disorders, which are ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the first and sixth leading causes of disability, respectively. Due to the limited health resources, the traditional method of mental health diagnosis as one-to-one consultation is difficult to meet the needs of the large number of mental subhealth population. In this article, we propose a new method for mental health recognition that could identify potentially clinically significant symptoms of
