Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures the correlation between the fMRI response and stimulus properties. A linear relationship between neural activity and fMRI response is commonly assumed. However, the response to repetitive stimulation cannot be explained by a simple superposition of single-event responses. BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a common disorder that has traditionally been treated as a homogeneous condition. However, recent evidence indicates that it is a heterogenous condition with several subtypes. For example, studies of the visual system indicate that not all dyslexics have a normal visual pathway. Approximately 75% have a processing deficit in the magnocellular pathway. Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (PRVEP) were studied in 25 patients from 17 separate families with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) syndrome. Twenty patients had classic CMT with depressed tendon reflexes, slow motor nerve conduction velocities, and autosomal dominant inheritance. Four patients demonstrated typical findings of CMT, but there was no documented family history. One patient had the axonal form of hereditary motor sensory neuropathy. Acute and chronic schizophrenic subjects were tested with 6 simple experimental tasks of visual stimulus selection. The 2 control groups were a group of non-psychiatric subjects and one of patients with other psychiatric diagnoses. The 6 experimental tasks represented three different types of attention: 1) differentiation between "figure" and "background", 2) concentration; 3) visual integration (Gestalt completion). The main result was that the acute group with paranoidal psychosis and hallucinations made significantly more mistakes in figure-background differentiation (grouping of patterns).

The present study examined whether the same brain region mediates visual-perceptual repetition priming and a familiarity component of visual recognition memory. BACKGROUND: Older drivers are a rapidly growing demographic group worldwide; many have visual processing impairments. Little is known about their preferences about vehicle instrument cluster design.
METHODS: We evaluated the psychometric properties of a questionnaire on "dashboard" design for a population-based sample of 1000 older drivers. Topics included gauges, knobs/switches, and interior lighting; items were statements about their visual design. Response options used a Likert-scale ("Definitely True" to "Definitely False").
