The Multi-Center Dilemma Project: an investigation on the role of cognitive conflicts in health.

The Multi-Center Dilemma Project is a collaborative research endeavour aimed at determining the role of dilemmas--a kind of cognitive conflict, detected by using an adaptation of Kelly's Repertory Grid Technique--in a variety of clinical conditions. Implicative dilemmas appear in one third of the non-clinical group (n = 321) and in about half of the clinical group (n = 286), the latter having a proportion of dilemmas that doubles that of the non-clinical sample. Within the clinical group, we studied 87 subjects, after completing a psychotherapy process, and found that therapy helps to dissolve

Moving around objects and recognizing them.

This research concerned the use of mental rotation in recognizing rotated objects. Instead of the classic Shepard's paradigm in which subjects were still while observing rotated objects, here subjects had to move (or imagine moving) around stationary three-dimensional objects put in the middle of the trajectory. Thus, depending on the viewing positions, such objects were seen under six different perspectives (from 30 degrees to 180 degrees). The latter task has been thought to be closer to everyday life in which we obtain information regarding objects from their spatial properties. The results

Cognitive and performance-based treatments for panic attacks in people with varying degrees of agoraphobic disability.

Compared the effectiveness of cognitive therapy and performance-based exposure as treatments for panic attacks. Subjects were 48 panicky individuals selected without regard to agoraphobic disability, and who varied widely in that respect. Subjects were assigned randomly to either cognitive treatment, performance-based exposure treatment, a combined cognitive/performance treatment, or a no-treatment control condition. All three treatments led to marked and enduring improvements in panic, and did not differ from one another in effectiveness, whereas the control condition produced little benefit.

Sexual orientation stereotypy in the distortion of clinical judgment.

It has been suggested that if a person's sexual orientation is unconventional, their nonsexual psychological problems will be construed in sexual terms to a marked degree. An experiment is described in which undergraduates read a case study of a man troubled by depression, catastrophizing, heavy drinking, and other maladaptive behavior not obviously related to his sexuality. Half the subjects were told that the patient had had several extramarital affairs, exclusively with men; the others, affairs exclusively with women. Blind content analyses of subject responses revealed that when the man wa

The co-use of nicotine and prescription psychostimulants: A review of their behavioral and neuropharmacological interactions.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine is commonly co-used with other psychostimulants. These high co-use rates have prompted much research on interactions between nicotine and psychostimulant drugs. These studies range from examination of illicitly used psychostimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine to prescription psychostimulants used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) such as methylphenidate (Ritalin™) and d-amphetamine (active ingredient of Adderall™). However, previous reviews largely focus on nicotine interactions with illicitly used psychostimulants with sparse mention of pre

Tuberculosis of elbow and wrist joints - usefulness of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in morphological changes evaluation.

More than one per cent of Welsh children are in public care, the majority of whom are aged 5-15 years and living in foster care. Well-being is at the heart of the Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act 2014. Under the Act, services are mandated to support the well-being of those they work with, including children who are in out-of-home care. The views of the children on what matters to their well-being are understood to be central to decisions about their care. International advances in researching child well-being has led to an understanding of the central importance of children's subject

Bayesian Mixed Models Approach to Exploring Resilience: Impact of Stress on Subjective Health and Affects Over Time During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Profound stressors such as the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the importance of understanding resilience mechanisms and approaches for quantifying them in longitudinal studies. METHODS: We used Bayesian mixed models to analyze resilience dynamics with ordinal dependent variables: subjective physical and mental health, and fear, sadness, and anger. The models included fixed effects for individual stressors and random intercepts for participants, applied to the Gutenberg-COVID-19 cohort study. RESULTS: There were 206,912 responses from 7386 participants (mean age 55.09 years, 5

Ego-dystonia: a review in search of definitions.

The ego-dystonic experience refers to the negative assessment that the subject makes of some of their thoughts or emotions, in the context of a conserved state of consciousness, as well as other aspects of their social and intrapersonal life that are relatively intact. Ego-dystonia is a widely used construct, but one that has not been defined in reasonably operational terms. Perhaps this explains why it is no longer used in contemporary classifications of mental disorders such as the ICD-11 and DSM-5. It is related to the awareness of the mental illness, with feelings of guilt and shame, but i

Wise interventions: Psychological remedies for social and personal problems.

Long-standing social problems such as poor achievement, personal and intergroup conflict, bad health, and unhappiness can seem like permanent features of the social landscape. We describe an approach to such problems rooted in basic theory and research in social psychology. This approach emphasizes subjective meaning-making-working hypotheses people draw about themselves, other people, and social situations; how deleterious meanings can arise from social and cultural contexts; how interventions to change meanings can help people flourish; and how initial change can become embedded to alter the

Variceal bleeding: consensus meeting report from the Brazilian Society of Hepatology.

In the last decades, several improvements in the management of variceal bleeding have resulted in a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality of patients with cirrhosis and bleeding varices. Progress in the multidisciplinary approach to these patients has led to a better management of this disease by critical care physicians, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, endoscopists, radiologists and surgeons. In this respect, the Brazilian Society of Hepatology has, recently, sponsored a consensus meeting in order to draw evidence-based recommendations on the management of these difficult-to-tre

The impact of prepartum pandemic-related perceived stress on anxiety symptoms in the postpartum: The role of perceived childbirth experiences.

Postpartum anxiety is a significant component of postpartum maternal distress and is related to adverse outcomes for both the mother and the child. Although previous research reported higher anxiety symptoms in pregnant women during the Covid-19 pandemic, no studies evaluated the negative impact of pandemic-related perceived stress on postpartum anxiety symptomatology over time. This study aimed to examine the impact of prepartum pandemic-related stress on postpartum anxiety and to evaluate the role of subjective labor and delivery experiences on this relationship. A sample of 172 pregnant wom

Autism outcomes and neurobehavioural markers in young children born to mothers with HIV in Kenya: a protocol for the Alama project.

INTRODUCTION: The over 14 million African children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (CHEU) are at risk for poor health outcomes, including neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism; however, no study to date has examined autism in CHEU in Africa, where the vast majority of these children live. Scalable diagnostic and neurobehavioural tools, including powerful, low-cost approaches such as eye-tracking, for detection and study of mechanistic neural processes are necessary to advance autism research in these settings. The objective of this study is to examine autism diagnostic outcomes and e
