A case of luxatio erecta associated with a fracture of the greater tuberosity and a mixed nerve lesion is presented. The arm is abducted with the elbow flexed and the hand above the head, and there are creases on the shoulder. Reduction may be accomplished by upward traction on the extended arm with countertraction on the top of the shoulder and carrying the arm through an arc to the side of the body.

PURPOSE: We report our initial experiences with use of a new technique we developed for implantation of Sonoma Crx intramedullary rod in patients with displaced clavicle fractures.
METHODS: A total of 35 patients (mean age 41.82 ± 13.65, male:female ratio = 21:14) having Robinson Types 1b, 2b and 3b displaced midshaft fractures with >2 cm clavicle shortening were included into the study. A single small incision (~1 cm) was made over the anteromedial aspect of the involved clavicle and an appropriate sized intramedullary nail was inserted in reverse (mirror) configuration of that has been sugg

Humerus fractures comprise 5% to 8% of all fractures. Although uncommon, nonunions can present a frustrating challenge to the orthopedic surgeon. Various risk factors that may predispose patients to nonunion include obesity, osteoporosis, alcoholism, smoking, poor bone quality, and scar tissue. Many methods of treatment have been described with various degrees of success. The rates of healing of humeral nonunions by traditional means of internal fixation with bone graft range from 70% to 92%, although in cases of infection, poorly vascularized beds, and open, segmental, or severely comminuted

Surgical management of two-part and three-part proximal humerus fractures is difficult and requires familiarity with more than one method of fixation. Poor bone quality, comminution, and the deforming forces of the rotator cuff on the tuberosities influence the choice of operative approach and fixation techniques. Closed reductions and percutaneous pinning offer the potential advantage of minimal soft-tissue dissection; however, good bone quality and minimal comminution are prerequisites. Selected two-part surgical neck fractures and valgus-impacted fractures lend themselves well to this techn

BACKGROUND: Compared with the Latarjet procedure, the Bristow procedure has a lower screw-related complication rate but poor bone healing. A modified Inlay Bristow procedure has been reported to significantly improve the bone healing rate, but the biomechanical mechanism is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of the bone graft between a modified Inlay Bristow procedure and the classic Bristow procedure.
METHODS: Sixteen left scapula models (Sawbones, Composite Scapula, and fourth generation) were randomly divided into 2 groups (8:8). The bone graft in th

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fracture (PHF) complications, whether following surgery or nonoperative management, require standardization of definitions and documentation for consistent reporting. We aimed to define an international consensus core event set (CES) of clinically-relevant unfavorable events of PHF to be documented in clinical routine practice and research.
METHODS: A Delphi exercise was implemented with an international panel of experienced shoulder trauma surgeons selected by survey invitation of AO Trauma members. An organized list of PHF events after nonoperative or operative

The manifestation of glenohumeral arthritis in the young adult is a devastating occurrence that can be difficult to manage. This review details the many underlying etiologies including genetic causes, congenital abnormalities, glenohumeral instability, posttraumatic lesions, postcapsulorraphy arthropathy, osteonecrosis, intraarticular pain pump postoperative use, radiofrequency/thermal capsulorraphy treatments, septic arthritis/infection, and inflammatory arthropathies. Although each of these potential causes have been well-studied, their contributions to the development of glenohumeral arthri

An open dislocation of the shoulder is a very uncommon and serious injury. The sequelae of open glenohumeral dislocation include infection, avascular necrosis, and limited motion. The patient with such complications will have serious compromise in shoulder function, as illustrated in this case report and reference to another report in the literature.

Shoulder and neck concerns are prevalent musculoskeletal issues prompting medical attention, often stemming from scapulothoracic disorders that can serve as both the cause and consequence of other shoulder abnormalities. Scapular dyskinesis, fractures, benign and malignant masses, and neuropathies are frequently overlooked yet can substantially affect shoulder pain and function, particularly in athletes. Scapulothoracic disorders may lead to and/or be worsened by common shoulder abnormalities including those of the rotator cuff, neighboring bursae, and the glenohumeral articulation and labrum.

This study aimed to establish whether post-mortem injury patterns can assist in distinguishing drivers from front seat passengers among victims of motor vehicle collisions without regard to collision type, vehicle type or if safety equipment had been used. Injuries sustained by 206 drivers and 91 front seat passengers were catalogued from post-mortem reports. Injuries were coded for the body region, depth and location of the injury. Statistical analysis was used to detect injuries capable of discriminating between driver and passenger. Drivers were more likely to sustain the following injuries

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly used for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity due to their proven metabolic benefits. However, their impact on musculoskeletal conditions, particularly in non-weight-bearing joints such as the shoulder joint, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether GLP-1RA use was associated with the development of shoulder pathologies (glenohumeral osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis, atraumatic rotator cuff tears, and shoulder fractures) over a 5-year period.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study…

Managing greater tuberosity (GT) fractures, especially those with glenohumeral (GH) dislocations, poses a challenge in balancing stable fixation while promoting early mobilization. While surgical fixation is often required for significant displacement, the optimal fixation technique remains debated due to the risk of complications and inconsistent outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of the Modified Hook Wiring (MHW) technique for open reduction and internal fixation of isolated displaced GT fractures. Thirteen patients with a mean age of 49.4±4.7 years were treated using the MH

BACKGROUND: Implants made of various types of material can be used for the internal fixation of fractures. Carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) is a radiolucent material that may have advantageous handling properties compared with titanium implants.
METHODS: Seventy-six patients with proximal humerus fractures requiring surgery were randomized to receive a fixed-angle plate made out of either titanium or CFR- PEEK. To measure the functional outcome, the DASH score (Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand; primary endpoint), the Simple Shoulder Test (SST), and the Oxford Sho

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate functional outcome after hemiarthroplasty for displaced proximal humeral fractures and to review whether prosthesis type, intraoperative technique or previous ipsilateral shoulder surgery could affect the outcome.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and radiographs of patients who had undergone hemiarthroplasty for proximal humeral fractures between 1992 and 2000. We identified 45 patients, 39 with acute fractures and 6 with fracture-related complications. One surgeon performed 17 surgeries (38%), and the rest were carried out by 11 other orthopedic surgeons. Studies have reported conflicting results regarding external fixation for displaced proximal humeral fractures. Compared with open reduction and internal fixation, external fixation for displaced proximal humeral fractures avoids dissection and soft tissue stripping and leads to higher union rates, a lower incidence of avascular necrosis, less scaring of the scapulohumeral interface, and faster rehabilitation. Some authors have reported good or excellent results and minimum complications compared with open reduction and internal fixation; however, others have reported that external fixation do
