Free and freer XY models.

We study two versions of the XY model where the spins but also the interaction topology is allowed to change. In the free XY model, the number of links is fixed, but their positions in the network are not. We also study a more relaxed version where even the number of links is allowed to vary, we call it the freer XY model. When the interaction networks are dense enough, both models have phase transitions visible both in spin configurations and the network structure. The low-temperature phase in the free XY model is characterized by tightly connected clusters of spins pointing in the same direc

Transport mechanisms for iron and other transition metals in rat and rabbit erythroid cells.

1. Earlier studies have shown that Fe2+ transport into erythroid cells is inhibited by several transition metals (Mn2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+) and that Fe2+ transport can occur by two saturable mechanisms, one of high affinity and the other of low affinity. Also, the transport of Zn2+ and Cd2+ into erythroid cells is stimulated by NaHCO3 and NaSCN. The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether all of these transition metals can be transported by the processes described for Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ and to determine the properties of the transport processes. 2. Rabbit reticulocytes and mat

Dual-Functional Metallized Basalt Fiber with Exceptional Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Joule Heating Capabilities under Simulated Lunar Temperature Conditions.

The lunar mare region is rich in basaltic minerals, and in situ resource utilization (ISRU) is a fundamental strategy for sustainable extraterrestrial construction. However, combining electroless plating with basalt fibers for such construction leads to a significant mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the fiber substrate and metal coating. Under extreme temperature alternations, this mismatch induces interfacial thermal stress concentration, causing coating peeling and performance failure. To address this issue, this study, using commercial terrestrial basalt fiber as a

Quantum-Confined Stark Effect in Polar InGaN/GaN Quantum Wells of Different Widths Studied by Photoluminescence Under Hydrostatic Pressure.

Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) has been studied under hydrostatic pressure and varying excitation powers in three samples of single In0.17Ga0.83N quantum wells with different widths: 2.6 nm, 5.2 nm, and 10.4 nm. Transitions involving ground states were strong in the 2.6 nm well, weak in the 5.2 nm well, and absent in the 10.4 nm well. Pressure coefficients of PL lines have been used to estimate the electric field in the wells. In the widest well, the field seems to be fully screened (at high excitation powers). Simulations involving Poisson and Schrödinger equations allowed us to ident

Iridium Artificial Metalloenzymes Enabled Photo-Enzymatic Radical Indolone Synthesis.

Biotin-streptavidin artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs) provide a platform to integrate transition-metal catalysis within a protein-defined microenvironment. Traditional indolone syntheses often rely on transition metal catalysts, high temperatures, and strong oxidants, limiting functional-group tolerance, and sustainability. In this study, we report a visible-light-driven radical cyclization of acrylamides and diazo-esters to indolones mediated by a biotinylated iridium-photocatalyst. Incorporation into engineered streptavidin generates highly active photo-ArMs, enabling reactions under mild aqu

Room Temperature Gas Phase Equilibrium Constants of the Methanol Dimer, Trimer, and Tetramer.

We have detected the methanol dimer, trimer, and tetramer at equilibrium conditions at room temperature in the gas phase using direct absorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The infrared intensity of the OH-stretching transitions are enhanced upon hydrogen bonding and are increasingly red-shifted with increasing cluster size, facilitating identification and quantification of the various clusters. We calculate the intensities of the bound OH-stretches, OHb, for all clusters with a range of reduced dimensional vibrational models with different levels of electronic structure theory. P

Prediction of transition metal carbonitride monolayers MN4C6 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) made up of a benzene ring and a planar MN4 moiety.

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a class of graphene-like magnetic materials, transition metal carbonitrides MN4C6 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co), which are made up of a benzene ring and an MN4 moiety, two common planar units in the compounds. The structural stability is demonstrated by the phonon and molecular dynamics calculations, and the formation mechanism of the planar geometry of MN4C6 is ascribed to the synergistic effect of sp2 hybridization, M-N coordination bond, and π-d conjugation. The MN4C6 materials consist of only one layer of atoms and the transition metal atom is

High-Resolution "Magic"-Field Spectroscopy on Trapped Polyatomic Molecules.

Rapid progress in cooling and trapping of molecules has enabled first experiments on high-resolution spectroscopy of trapped diatomic molecules, promising unprecedented precision. Extending this work to polyatomic molecules provides unique opportunities due to more complex geometries and additional internal degrees of freedom. Here, this is achieved by combining a homogeneous-field microstructured electric trap, rotational transitions with minimal Stark broadening at a"magic" offset electric field, and optoelectrical Sisyphus cooling of molecules to the low millikelvin temperature regime. We t

Pressure-induced amorphization and existence of molecular and polymeric amorphous forms in dense SO2.

We report here the pressure-induced amorphization and reversible structural transformation between two amorphous forms of SO2: molecular amorphous and polymeric amorphous, with the transition found at 26 GPa over a broad temperature regime, 77 K to 300 K. The transformation was observed by both Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The results were corroborated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, where both forward and reverse transitions were detected, opening a window to detailed analysis of the respective local structures. The high-pressure polymeric amo

Dealing with Cu reduction in X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments.

In this paper we prove in the exemplary case of the amyloid-β peptide in complex with Cu(ii) that at the current low temperatures employed in XAS experiments, the time needed for collecting a good quality XAS spectrum is significantly shorter than the time after which structural damage becomes appreciable. Our method takes advantage of the well-known circumstance that the transition of Cu from the oxidized to the reduced form under ionizing radiation can be quantified by monitoring a characteristic peak in the pre-edge region. We show that there exists a sufficiently large time window in which

Solvent-dependent stabilization of metastable monolayer polymorphs at the liquid-solid interface.

Self-assembly of 1,3,5-tris(4'-biphenyl-4"-carbonitrile)benzene monolayers was studied at the liquid-solid interface by scanning tunneling microscopy. Application of different fatty acid homologues as solvents revealed a solvent-induced polymorphism. Yet, tempering triggered irreversible phase transitions of the initially self-assembled monolayers, thereby indicating their metastability. Interestingly, in either case, the same thermodynamically more stable and more densely packed monolayer polymorph was obtained after thermal treatment, irrespective of the initial structure. Again, the same de

Temperature-Induced Lipid Remodeling Underpins Thermal Resilience in Marine Macroalgae via Homeoviscous Membrane Adaptation: Bridging Experiments and Atomistic Simulations.

Marine macroalgae are vital primary producers of coastal ecosystems and natural sources of industrially-important bioactive compounds. Temperature governs their productivity, while ocean warming and extreme marine heatwaves amid climate change threaten their survival. Integrating experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, this study for the first time unravels how lipid remodeling contributes to the thermal acclimation mechanism of Kappaphycus alvarezii─a carrageenan-producing marine macroalga widely cultivated in tropics and subtropics. We have elucidated the adaptive rearrangement

Spatial patterns and drivers of temperature sensitivity of winter evergreen vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau.

Climate warming has enhanced the winter greenness of evergreen vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau over the past 20 years. This response is primarily determined by the temperature sensitivity of vegetation, rather than the absolute extent of warming. However, how these factors shape the spatial patterns of sensitivity of vegetation to temperature (abbreviated as vegetation sensitivity) remains poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the spatial pattern of vegetation sensitivity and its driving factors by using partial least squares regression, pixel-scale multiple linear regression, zone-l

Metabolic consequences of sex reversal in two lizard species: a test of the like-genotype and like-phenotype hypotheses.

Vertebrate sex is typically determined genetically, but in many ectotherms sex can be determined by genes (genetic sex determination, GSD), temperature (temperature-dependent sex determination, TSD), or interactions between genes and temperature during development. TSD may involve GSD systems with either male or female heterogamety (XX/XY or ZZ/ZW) where temperature overrides chromosomal sex determination to cause a mismatch between genetic sex and phenotypic sex (sex reversal). In these temperature-sensitive lineages, phylogenetic investigations point to recurrent evolutionary shifts between

Molecular mobility-based estimation of the crystallization rates of amorphous nifedipine and phenobarbital in poly(vinylpyrrolidone) solid dispersions.

The overall crystallization rates and mean relaxation times of amorphous nifedipine and phenobarbital in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolido … l remaining in the solid dispersion was estimated from the change in the heat capacity at its glass transition temperature (T(g)). The time required for the amount of amorphous drug remaining to fall to 90% (t(90)) was calculated from the profile of time versus the amount of amorphous drug remaining. The t(90) values for the solid dispersions studied were 100-1000 times …

Spin-Phonon Coupling and Magnetic Ordering in Layered CrPS4.

Magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials offers a platform for exploring dimensionality-tuned magnetic ordering and distinct spin-phonon coupling. Among such materials, CrPS4 stands out as an air-stable A-type antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature of 36 K. Here, we investigate the evolution of phonon modes influenced by magnetic ordering in CrPS4 across varying temperatures and layer thicknesses by using Raman spectroscopy, supported by theoretical calculations. Due to weak interlayer coupling, the thickness-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are negligible (<0.5 cm-1). Notably, anoma

Intramolecular Charge-Transfer Dopants Enable Isolated Triplet Excitons as Spin Qutrits in a Single Crystal.

Organic molecular crystals enable spin alignment of triplet excitons over macroscopic distances, offering a molecular route to solid-state quantum technologies. In typical crystals, however, dense packing promotes spin decoherence through dipolar coupling and exciton hopping. Although dilution doping can mitigate these effects, reported examples remain scarce because dopants must satisfy stringent structural and energetic constraints. Here, we broaden the design space for doped organic crystals by introducing a strategy that employs a host-derived dopant with intramolecular charge-transfer (IC

Coexisting long-range zigzag antiferromagnetic order and glassy dynamics in spin-1 honeycomb lattice Na3Ni2SbO6.

Here, we report an interesting magnetic oxide NaNiSbO, where the interplay between exchange interactions and lattice symmetry crucially influence its exotic ground state (GS). This compound features a layered honeycomb lattice with magnetic Ni(spin-1) surrounding nonmagnetic Sbcenters. The x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements confirm a Nicharge state with notable spin and orbital moments at room temperature. The material exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering around 17 K () and a field-induced magnetic transition at lower temperatures. Our measurements reveal a low-

Interfacial Behavior of PNIPAM Brushes under Shear and Thermal Stimuli: The Role of Grafting Density.

The interface between grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and fluid plays an important role in drug delivery, responsive nanomaterials, and separation technologies. However, under external shear, the transport at the interface is regulated by both the thermoresponsive behavior and grafting densities. This study combines equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the synergistic effects of grafting density, temperature, and shear flow on the structural and dynamic properties of PNIPAM brushes in methanol-water solutions. The results reveal that higher
