Explicit and implicit approach vs. avoidance tendencies towards high vs. low calorie food cues in patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have a strong ability to limit food intake. Thus, dysfunctional approach vs. avoidance behaviors towards food are evident in AN. We applied an approach-avoidance task (AAT), in which n = 41 AN patients and n = 42 controls either approached ("pull") or avoided ("push") high (HC) vs. low calorie (LC) food pictures based solely on the presented picture format (landscape vs. portrait). We tested the hypothesis that -in opposition to controls displaying an approach bias towards HC food cues- AN patients would show an avoidance bias (measured as different response

Ventral tegmental area muscarinic receptors modulate depression and anxiety-related behaviors in rats.

Cholinergic and dopaminergic mechanisms within the mesolimbic dopamine system are suggested to play a role in the manifestation of depression and anxiety-related disorders. However, despite the fact that cholinergic mechanisms in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) highly regulate dopamine activity, the role of VTA cholinergic mechanisms in depression-related behaviors is relatively unknown. Here we sought to determine whether enhancing cholinergic tone in the VTA would alter depression and anxiety-related behavior in the forced swim test (FST), elevated plus maze (EPM) and sucrose preference tes

Changes in tau phosphorylation levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex following chronic stress.

Studies have indicated that early-life or early-onset depression is associated with a 2- to 4-fold increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). In AD, aggregation of an abnormally phosphorylated form of the tau protein may be a key pathological event. Tau is known to play a major role in promoting microtubule assembly and stabilization, and in maintaining the normal morphology of neurons. Several studies have reported that stress may induce tau phosphorylation. The main aim of the present study was to investigate possible alterations in the tau protein in the hippocampus and frontal

The EL mouse: a natural model of autism and epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Autism is a multifactorial disorder that involves impairments in social interactions and communication, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. About 30% of individuals with autism develop epilepsy by adulthood. The EL mouse has long been studied as a natural model of multifactorial idiopathic generalized epilepsy with complex partial seizures. Because epilepsy is a comorbid trait of autism, we evaluated the EL mouse for behaviors associated with autism. METHODS: We compared the behavior of EL mice to age-matched control DDY mice, a genetically related nonepileptic strain. Th

Developmental differences in sensory decision making involved in deciding to try a novel fruit.

OBJECTIVES: This research compared sensory processing and personality traits involved in deciding to try a novel fruit (guava) in adults and children. DESIGN: The research employed an age, sex, and food neophobia matched between-participant design to examine sensory decision making in choosing to eat a novel fruit. METHODS: Forty-four adults (Study 1) and 68 children (Study 2) took part. In each study, participants were separated into two groups to investigate whether prior assessment of a familiar and liked fruit (apple) that shares similar visual characteristics to the target novel fruit (

Participatory research for chronic disease prevention in Inuit communities.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a community-based chronic disease prevention program for Inuit in Nunavut, Canada. METHODS: Stake-holders contributed to intervention development through formative research (in-depth interviews (n = 45), dietary recalls (n = 42)), community workshops, group feedback and implementation training. RESULTS: Key cultural themes included the perceived healthiness of country foods, food sharing, and importance of family. During community workshops, key problem foods for intervention were identified as well as healthier culturally and economically acceptable alternatives for th

Stress-induced laboratory eating behavior in obese women with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the microstructural eating behavior of obese patients with and without binge eating disorder (BED) after stress induction in laboratory. METHOD: Forty-eight obese women were investigated. Seventeen were assigned to the group of BED. Group (BED vs. non-BED) by condition (stress vs. no stress) interaction effect on feeding variables, measured by a universal eating monitor, was tested. Stress was induced by the trier social stress test (TSST) and chocolate pudding served as laboratory food. RESULTS: From the nonstress to the stress condition, patients with BED, when compar

Understanding the older food consumer. Present day behaviours and future expectations.

The main aim of this study was to determine whether Baby boomers know how they would manage to maintain a healthy diet on lower incomes in retirement. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at two shopping centres in Melbourne, Australia with 352 respondents. Contingency table analyses (using chi-square tests) were used to examine differences in present and future cooking habits between gender, age and socio-economic groups as well as anticipated changes to food shopping if they had less money in the future. The findings suggest that the most common food preparation behaviours were making meal

Food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating in children: a review.

Two factors have been shown to contribute to rejection or acceptance of fruits and vegetables: food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating. Food neophobia is generally regarded as the reluctance to eat, or the avoidance of, new foods. In contrast, 'picky/fussy' eaters are usually defined as children who consume an inadequate variety of foods through rejection of a substantial amount of foods that are familiar (as well as unfamiliar) to them. Through understanding the variables which influence the development or expression of these factors (including age, personality, gender, social influences and

The relative affective potency of glycine, L-serine and sucrose as assessed by a brief-access taste test in inbred strains of mice.

In general, rodents prefer both sucrose and L-serine relative to water and treat both compounds as possessing a similar taste quality (e.g. 'sweetness') despite that they are believed to bind with different T1R heterodimeric receptors in taste bud cells. We assessed the affective potency of these compounds along with glycine, which is thought to bind with both T1R receptor complexes, using a brief-access taste test in a gustometer. Unconditioned licking responses of two 'taster' strains (C57BL/6J and SWR/J), which display high preference for low concentrations of sucrose, and two 'non-taster'

Association between sweet preference and paternal history of alcoholism in psychiatric and substance abuse patients.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between preference for stronger sweet solutions and propensity to excessive alcohol drinking is supported by both animal and human studies. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that sweet preference is associated with the genetic risk of alcoholism as measured by a paternal history of alcoholism. METHODS: Participants were 180 patients admitted to a residential treatment program for the treatment of alcoholism, drug dependence, or psychiatric conditions. In addition to a routine medical examination, patients completed the standard sweet preference test t

Dietary preferences of Brattleboro rats correlated with an overexpression of galanin in the hypothalamus.

Galanin (GAL) is a neuropeptide cosynthesized with vasopressin (AVP) in neurons of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system. It increases food intake when injected into the brain and elicits an overconsumption of fat. The Brattleboro rat (DI) is genetically unable to produce AVP; the AVP-deficient-producing neurons of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system of DI rats are chronically stimulated and DI rats suffer from diabetes insipidus. We studied the central expression of GAL and the dietary preferences in the DI rat. GAL was overexpressed in the hypothalamus of the DI rat. GAL mRNA was highe

Salt preference in adolescence is predicted by common prenatal and infantile mineralofluid loss.

We investigated early determinants of salt preference in humans. In animals, physiological events, among them perinatal mineralofluid loss, contribute to long-term salt intake. Recent findings suggest that in humans prenatal mineralofluid loss (high levels of maternal vomiting) may increase the lifelong avidity for salt in offspring. Here we report that commonly occurring events that cause mild fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance in infancy, as well as prenatally, predict the avidity for salt in adolescents. Using questionnaires, 50 mothers recalled incidence and severity of infantile diarrhe

Alcohol exposure during development alters social recognition and social communication in rats.

The present study examined the effects of postnatal alcohol exposure via gastric intubation on social communication of diet preference and social recognition. Rats were placed in one of three treatment groups. All treatments occurred from postnatal day (PD) 2 through 10 and Experiments 1 and 2 were conducted when the rats reached 60 and 100 days of age, respectively. Alcohol-exposed pups received a 3.0 g/kg dose of ethanol in milk solution that was delivered by insertion of PE-10 tubing down the esophagus daily from PD 2 through 10. Intubated control animals underwent intubation without ethano

Salt preference in rats with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (Brattleboro strain).

Brattleboro rats are homozygous for diabetes insipidus (HO-DI), lacking the ability to synthesize vasopressin. Besides increasing water consumption, HO-DI rats may compensate for their excessive renal water loss by reducing their intake of and preference for substances that elevate plasma osmolarity. In two experiments we assessed this possibility. In Experiment 1, salt preference of HO-DI and control Long-Evans (LE) rats was measured by presenting the rats with two tubes: one filled with water and the other with NaCl. In the first part of the experiment, 18 NaCl concentrations were presented

Nutritional support during pregnancy and lactation.

Needs for virtually all nutrients increase during pregnancy and lactation but those for iron are the most difficult to meet from a normal diet. During pregnancy, nutritional objectives include helping the woman to increase the quality of her diet in protective nutrients as well as energy to meet the elevated needs of gestation, ensuring satisfactory weight gain patterns, prescribing iron and possible folic acid supplements, ensuring that intakes of alcohol, drugs, and other potentially harmful substances are moderate, preparing her for feeding the infant, and coping with any special diet-relat

The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on food craving, reward and appetite in a healthy population.

The ability to control hedonic appetite is associated with executive functioning, originating in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). These rewarding components of food can override homeostatic mechanisms, potentiating obesogenic behaviours. Indeed, those susceptible to overconsumption appear to have PFC hypo-activation. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) has been shown to reduce food craving and consumption, potentially via attenuating this reward response. We examined the effects of stimulation on food reward and craving using a healthy-weight cohort. Th

Short report: gnathostomiasis in Mexico.

Gnathostomiasis is an important food-borne parasitic zoonosis that is endemic mainly in Asian countries where some people prefer to eat raw freshwater fish. In North America, the first recorded case of gnathostomiasis was in Mexico in 1970, and the numbers of gnathostomiasis patients in Mexico seems to be increasing dramatically with time. However, the epidemiology of this disease in Mexico has never been described in detail. Here we review the current status of gnathostomiasis in Mexico.
