The Role of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

With the notable exceptions of the United States and Canada in particular, the global burden of disease in adults due to invasive infection with the dangerous respiratory, bacterial pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) remains. This situation prevails despite the major successes of inclusion of polysaccharide conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in many national childhood immunization programs and associated herd protection in adults, as well as the availability of effective antimicrobial agents. Accurate assessment of the geographic variations in the prevalence of invasive pneumococcal dise

Phenotypic characterization of encephalitis in the brains of goats experimentally infected with Spanish Goat Encephalitis Virus.

Spanish goat encephalitis virus (SGEV) is a novel tick-borne flavivirus subtype, closely related to the flavivirus louping ill virus (LIV). SGEV caused a severe, acute and mortal neurological disease outbreak in northern Spain in a goat herd. In order to characterize the cell population in lesions and to determine the distribution of the inflammatory cells, central nervous system (CNS) samples of nine female Alpine goats challenged subcutaneously with SGEV over the right thorax behind the elbow were evaluated using immunohistochemistry (microglia-Iba1, T lymphocytes-CD3, B lymphocytes-CD20 and

Occurrence of Bordetella infection in pigs in northern India.

Bordetella bronchiseptica infection causing atrophic rhinitis in pigs is reported from almost all countries. In the present study, occurrence of Bordetella infection in apparently healthy pigs was determined in 392 pigs sampled to collect 358 serum samples and 316 nasal swabs from Northern India by conventional bacterioscopy, detection of antigen with multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR), and detection of antibodies with microagglutination test (MAT) and enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). Bordetella bronchiseptica could be isolated from six (1.92%) nasal swabs. Although isolates

Dose-dependent effects of Chlamydia psittaci infection on pulmonary gas exchange, innate immunity and acute-phase reaction in a bovine respiratory model.

The respiratory pathogen Chlamydia psittaci naturally occurs in bovine herds and was recently shown to impair calf health in a dose-dependent manner. The aim of this study was to determine whether the functional consequences and immunological reactions of infection were dose related by quantifying the consequences of acute respiratory chlamydial infection on respiratory signs, disturbances of pulmonary gas exchange, response of the innate immune system, and acute-phase reaction. Fourteen calves were challenged intrabronchially with different C. psittaci doses (from 10(6) to 10(9)inclusion-form

Influence of age range of dairy Gir cows on the composition of colostrum and milk, and on calves' passive immunity transfer.

Colostrogenesis and lactogenesis influenced by age require further understanding in Zebu herds, due to the longevity of breeding cows. Thus, we aimed to compare colostrum and milk physicochemical and proteinogram of Dairy Gir cows and calves' passive immunity transfer by grouping 28 cows and their calves by maternal age: Young (n=6; aged 24-36 months), Adult (n=15; 37-91 months) and Senior (n=7; 96-137 months) groups. Colostrum and milk were collected at first milking (immediately after calving), transition milk (3rd milking, after 24h of calving) and full milk (10th milking, after 5 days of c

Comparative longitudinal analysis of T lymphocyte subpopulations in calves vaccinated with different doses of BCG-Phipps or with culture filtrate protein extract of Mycobacterium bovis in a natural transmission setting.

Currently, control programmes for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) contemplate the use of vaccines to reduce disease incidence rates. The BCG vaccine and the culture filtrate protein extract (CFPE) of Mycobacterium bovis are strong candidates for vaccination against bTB. We conducted an analysis of the immune response and evaluated activation and memory markers in CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocyte subpopulations in Holstein-Friesian calves immunised with different doses of M. bovis BCG-Phipps vaccine (1×10⁴ and 1×10⁶ CFU) or with CFPE (300 µg and 600 µg) in a natural transmission setting. Indirect impact of PCV10 children vaccination on the serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae causing invasive disease in adults over 50 in Colombia, 2005-2019: Observational analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) into childhood vaccination programmes has reduced the prevalence of vaccine serotypes (VTs) that cause invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children. In the elderly population, an impact has also been seen through indirect protection (herd effect). The aim of this study was to estimate the changes in serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates recovered from adult IPD and to evaluate the indirect effect of immunization with PCV10 based on laboratory records by analyzing the

Bovine TB and the development of new vaccines.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is caused by Mycobacterium bovis. The incidence of bTB is increasing in cattle herds of developed countries that have a wild life reservoir of M. bovis, such as the UK, New Zealand and the USA. The increase in the incidence of bTB is thought to be due, at least in part, to a wildlife reservoir of M. bovis. M. bovis is also capable of infecting humans and on a worldwide basis, M. bovis is thought to account for up to 10% of cases of human TB [Cosivi O, Grange JM, Daborn CJ et al. Zoonotic tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis in developing countries. Emerg Infect Dis

Determinants of Senecavirus A Pathogenesis: From Viral Genome to ANTXR1, Immunity, and Programmed Cell Death.

Senecavirus A (SVA), an emerging causative agent of porcine vesicular disease, belongs to the genus Senecavirus of the family Picornaviridae. The virus has been circulating in pig herds in the USA dating back to 1988, evolved into clinically significant pathogenic SVA variants causing a pandemic in the USA and Canada since 2014, and thereafter gradually spread to the Americas and Asia. To date, most studies have illustrated the infection dynamics, epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and vaccine development, yet the molecular pathogenesis of SVA remains incompletely characterized. As a novel pico

Whole-genome analysis of bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 associated with abortion in a vaccinated U.S. cattle herd.

Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoAHV1; family Orthoherpesviridae, taxon species Varicellovirus bovinealpha1)-a major cause of reproductive losses in cattle-establishes lifelong latency with periodic reactivation. Although vaccination reduces disease severity and abortion risk, BoAHV1 continues to circulate in cattle populations. Here, we report the whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of a BoAHV1 isolate recovered from fetal tissues associated with a last-trimester abortion in a vaccinated heifer herd. BoAHV1 was confirmed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and virus isolation in Madin-Darby bovine kidney cells.

TLR2 c.374C>T variant linked to natural resistance against brucellosis in Italian Mediterranean river buffalo.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis poses a significant threat to human health and the livestock industry, particularly affecting small-scale farmers. Several studies have demonstrated that TLR2 can recognize the Brucella abortus (B. abortus) surface lipoproteins (i.e. Omp10, Omp16 and Omp19), thus activating the immune response. This process can be altered by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TLR gene. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of SNPs in TLR2 could influence the resistance against brucellosis in Italian Mediterranean river buffalo, through case-control study and computa

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome developments: An in-depth review of recent findings.

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus (PRRSV) belonging to the Arteriviridae family is the cause of PRRS disease. After being discovered for the first time in the United States in 1987, this illness quickly expanded to Canada. The disease was initially discovered in late 1990 in Germany, from where it quickly spread throughout Europe. The consequences of PRRSV lead to a number of epidemiological issues, including a sickness with a delayed immune response that permits extended viremia, which facilitates viral transmission. The virus penetrates the nasal epithelium, tons

Serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) in the south of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis, an important zoonotic disease, is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Camels are one of several host species for T. gondii parasites and play an important role in the transmission of T. gondii to humans. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to describe the seroprevalence of T. gondii in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) from three provinces (Fars, Bushehr and Hormozgan), southern Iran first for this host. METHODS: A total of 180 serum samples were analysed for the presence of anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies using the enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay. RESULTS: Our re

Cold-passaged isolates and bat-swine influenza a chimeric viruses as modified live-attenuated vaccines against influenza a viruses in pigs.

Swine influenza A virus (swIAV) infections in pig populations cause considerable morbidity and economic losses. Frequent reverse zoonotic incursions of human IAV boost reassortment opportunities with authentic porcine and avian-like IAV in swine herds potentially enhancing zoonotic and even pre-pandemic potential. Vaccination using adjuvanted inactivated full virus vaccines is frequently used in attempting control of swIAV infections. Accelerated antigenic drift of swIAV in large swine holdings and interference of maternal antibodies with vaccine in piglets can compromise these efforts. Potent

Risk Analysis by Age on the Burden of Meningococcal Disease in Spain.

We conducted an age-based risk analysis of meningococcal disease in Spain to provide prospects on a rational vaccine schedule in pediatrics. We used the National Hospital Registry to estimate meningococcal hospitalization rate. Population census for each year was used as the denominator in computing the hospitalization rate. We computed the odds ratio of each age using <1 year old as a reference group. From 1998 to 2017, 13,554 hospitalized cases were diagnosed, with a declining trend across the years. Infants (<1 year, n = 2425) and children (1−14 years, n = 6053) comprised the majority of al

Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of an inactivated cell culture-derived Seneca Valley virus vaccine in pigs.

Seneca Valley virus (SVV) infection in pigs is associated with porcine idiopathic vesicular disease (PIVD). Outbreaks of SVV infection in pig herds have been reported in several Asia and Americas countries. Recently, a series of outbreaks of SVV infection occurred in China, Canada, Thailand and the United States. However, no available vaccines have been developed to limit the transmission of SVV. The SVV CH-FJ-2017 from Fujian province in China is a representative of the epidemic strains, and shows 98.5-99.9% capsid protein amino acid identity with the recent SVV strains. In the present study,

Transcriptome of Porcine PBMCs over Two Generations Reveals Key Genes and Pathways Associated with Variable Antibody Responses post PRRSV Vaccination.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a virus susceptible to antibody dependent enhancement, causing reproductive failures in sows and preweaning mortality of piglets. Modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines are used to control PRRS in swine herds. However, immunized sows and piglets often generate variable antibody levels. This study aimed to detect significant genes and pathways involved in antibody responsiveness of pregnant sows and their offspring post-PRRSV vaccination. RNA sequencing was conducted on peripheral blood-mononuclear cells (PBMCs), which were isolated fro
