Impact of managers' personal determinants in notifying workplace hazards.

Notification about work hazards is a legal requirement in advanced industrial countries, but workers have claimed, that in many cases, they do not receive enough information regarding risks, exposure, and medical problems. The recent professional literature on the subject has explored the ways in which notification is delivered without sufficiently considering the psychological incentives and barriers that may affect managers in transmitting risk information. The present study aimed at examining managers' personal determinants and notification of work hazards in a sample of 106 managers and 46

A comparative study of psychotic and nonpsychotic stalking.

A comparative analysis of psychotic versus nonpsychotic stalking is presented. Archival files of 25 forensic subjects whose alleged criminal offenses met a legal definition of stalking behavior were studied for demographic characteristics, stalking dynamics, psychosocial history, and current psychological variables. Although nearly one-third of all subjects had an Axis I psychotic disorder and were delusional, only one of these subjects had erotomanic delusions. The psychotic subjects' pursuit of victims was associated with other delusions and symptoms of psychosis. Nonpsychotic subjects tende

[The dimensions of isolation in the elderly].

For the aged, social isolation and loneliness are among the most frequent causes of hospitalization or placement in homes. A survey of 730 people over 65 shows that cohabitation becomes rarer with advancing age, a phenomenon that has grown increasingly important during the twentieth century. Social isolation, characterized by extremely infrequent contacts with other people, affects approximately one out of ten elderly people. Most at risk are those who retired from lower positions in employment, divorced people and widowers. The main causes are the absence of children and relatives in the imme

Prospects for a cognitive neuropsychology of autism: Hobson's choice.

Leslie (1987b) proposed a new, metarepresentational model for the cognition of pretense. This model identified a cognitive component necessary for the normal development of a "theory of mind." In this article, the relation of the child's early affective sensitivities to this component is considered. Early affective sensitivities seem to be cognitively distinct from the metarepresentational component. Childhood autism provides an interesting opportunity to study this problem. Three theoretical possibilities for the pathogenesis of this condition are presented: (a) a basic affective disorder as

Concerning knowledge of mental states.

How does a child acquire knowledge that other people are subjects of experience, and come to differentiate amongst mental states? In this paper I review some philosophical perspectives on these matters. In order to illustrate how the arguments have contemporary relevance, I criticize the 'theory of mind' approach currently favoured by many psychologists and point out certain implications for our view of early childhood autism.

Triangles of abuse: a model of maltreatment.

Research and clinical evidence support the view that the perpetrator (P), victim (V), and observer (O), all contribute to child abuse and neglect. This paper describes a model in which they have a necessary part in precipitating and sustaining the maltreatment. It appears they form a triangle or triquetra which rotates with time and circumstance. The perpetrator of sexual assault often becomes the victim when he is imprisoned. The victim of physical abuse may become the perpetrator of physical abuse in the next generation. Within each P, V, and O there is also a triquetra which rotates and whi

The outcome of neurotic disorders after out-patient and day hospital care.

New psychiatric out-patients with depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis were randomly allocated to out-patient care or to one of two types of day hospital treatment, one specialising in psychotherapy and the other offering all forms of day care. Of 106 patients who entered the study, 78 had assessments of psychiatric symptomatology and social adjustment both before treatment and after 4, 8 and 24 months. There was no significant difference in outcome between depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis, and no overall difference in response to treatment between the three types of care. Suicidal

[Social contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychology viewpoint--a survey. IV: Are there factors which determine social contact behavior?].

Some factors, which are important with regard to the contact behaviour of elderly women living alone, are reported and discussed: biographical sign, professional and social status as well as informations on the actual health status. Finally the essential results of the statistical intercorrelation of all involved variables are represented.

Stutterers' practices: folk remedies and therapeutic intervention.

Therapy with stutterers often attempts to eliminate the secondary "tricks" or "crutches" used by stutterers in social interaction. This study challenges such treatment, suggesting that these natural folk remedies are competent practices devised by stutterers to deal with the problematic contingencies posed by social life. Stutterers, rather than being manipulative, are highly attuned to the taken-for-granted structure of everyday interaction. I detail a number of the practices used by stutterers and argue that they comprise part of the ensemble of interactional and conversational practices use

Life crisis as a precursor to child abuse.

A number of theories have been proposed on the causation of child abuse, and many of these theories assign some role to stress. Stress is variously conceptualized as a continuous state resulting from poverty, poor housing, and the like, or as an immediate crisis such as an argument or the breakdown of an appliance. An alternate perspective on stress identifies it with life change events which require readjustment in the lifestyle of a person. When an excessive number or magnitude of such life change events occur, the person affected may be said to be in a state of life crisis. Such states of l

Sex, love, and commitment.

When a couple become erotically pair-bonded, whether for a night or a lifetime, they are by definition committed to each other erotically. That is the minimum. The degree varies. The commitment may be limited to the proceptive phase of solicitation or courtship, or it may include the acceptive phase of coitus, or it may extend to the conceptive phase of parenthood. People "fall in love with their fantasy" and project onto the partner a range of future commitments. If the partner fails to reciprocate, the pair-bond weakens and the partnership either dissolves or becomes eligible for marital cou

Exploring sports-related concussion awareness and response amongst teenage grassroots soccer players in the UK: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: This study examines sports-related concussions (SRC) experiences, beliefs, and behaviors among male and female teenage grassroots soccer players in the UK, focusing on how these are shaped by interpersonal and mediated relations with coaches, parents, and peers. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study informed by interpretivist epistemology and qualitative research design. Data collection involved focus groups, using a topic guide covering SRC knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and reporting intentions. Focus group sessions were conducted between July 2023 and April 2024. Participan

How the Inflamed Skull-Box Might Ruin the Cerebello-Cerebral Social Repertoire: Imaging, Testing, Rescuing with Currents.

Nascent cerebellar neuropsychiatry is rewriting complex human relations. In daily practice this sheds light on subsets of therapy-resistant patients, who feel hampered by a lack of skills in predictively presensing the trajectories to where especially their interpersonal appropriations might end up. Humans affected by "dysmetric" social phobia often lead minimal lives, strongly dislike exposition, suffer fatiguability also from immune dysfunctions, and anhedonia. In social dysmetria especially on the cerebellar cortex`s both lateralmost Crus-II (Van Overwalle) seem damaged, the left Crus-I may
