Performance of Makerless Tracking for Gimbaled Dynamic Tumor Tracking.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to report the workflow and the accuracy of the new markerless dynamic tumor tracking (MLDTT) method of the Vero 4DRT system introduced with ExacTrac 3.6.1. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Phantom measurements were performed to assess the accuracy of the MLDTT algorithm by using the QA-tool which is provided by the vendor. A patient breathing curve was used as the motion trajectory of the phantom and the target positions detected by the MLDTT algorithm were compared to the defined positions. Furthermore, eight patients have been treated with MLDTT betw

Application of Cinematic Rendering in Clinical Routine CT Examination of Ankle Sprains.

OBJECTIVE: Cinematic rendering technique is used to generate almost photorealistic 3D reconstructions of volumetric data. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of cinematically rendered reconstructions in routine CT examinations of ankle sprains. CONCLUSION: Cinematic rendering technique may be primarily used to deliver visual information to patients, physicians, and virtual anatomy classes. Postprocessing requires more time than traditional methods do, which can be a hindrance in clinical work.

An accurate method of radiological assessment of acetabular volume and orientation in computed tomography spatial reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional (2D) measurements of acetabular morphology and orientation are well known; there is less information on these acetabular characteristics in three dimensions. One important reason is the lack of standardized reference planes for the pelvis, especially in relation to the spinopelvic unit; another is that no method precisely assesses the acetabulum in three-dimensional (3D) orientation based on its axis rather than on the directions of the edges of the acetabular rim. We present an objective, highly reliable and accurate, axis-based approach to acetabular anthropometry

Whole-body post-mortem computed tomography compared with autopsy in the investigation of unexpected death in infants and children.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contribution of whole-body post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) in sudden unexpected death in infants and children. METHODS: Forty-seven cases of sudden unexpected death in children investigated with radiographic skeletal survey, whole-body PMCT and autopsy were enrolled. For imaging interpretation, non-specific post-mortem modifications and abnormal findings related to the presumed cause of death were considered separately. All findings were correlated with autopsy findings. RESULTS: There were 31 boys and 16 girls. Of these, 44 children (93.6 %) were younge

European Society of Biomechanics S.M. Perren Award 2008: using temporal trends of 3D bone micro-architecture to predict bone quality.

In longitudinal studies, three-dimensional (3D) bone images are acquired at sequential time points essentially resulting in four-dimensional (4D) data for an individual. Based on the 4D data, we propose to calculate temporal trends and project these trends to estimate future bone architecture. Multiple consecutive deformation fields, calculated with Demons deformable image registration algorithm, were extrapolated on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Test data were from in vivo micro-computed tomography (microCT) scans of the proximal tibia of Wistar rats that were either ovariectomized (OVX; N=5) or sh

The use of three-dimensional computed tomography images for anticipated difficult intubation airway evaluation of a patient with Treacher Collins syndrome.

A 13-year-old girl with Treacher Collins syndrome who had a history of difficult intubation was scheduled for plastic surgery. We took three-dimensional computed tomography images to better evaluate the anatomical features of the upper airway. The patient's anesthetic airway management was influenced by the findings of the images.

Evaluation of three different measurement methods for dural ectasia in Marfan syndrome.

AIM: Dural ectasia is a major diagnostic criterion for Marfan syndrome using the Ghent nosology. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of three different radiological methods previously proposed for the assessment of dural sac diameter in Marfan syndrome. METHODS: Marfan syndrome was diagnosed in our study using the Ghent criteria, disregarding dural ectasia as a criterion. Three proposed radiological methods were applied to measure dural sac diameter, examined for 41 patients (18 patients with and 23 without Marfan syndrome) by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Usin

Three-dimensional hip morphology analysis using CT transverse sections to automate diagnoses and surgery managements.

This paper describes an image analysis method that evaluates bone morphology of hip structures including the femur stem, trochanter, neck and head, acetabulum, and pelvis to automate hip diagnoses and surgical managements. On every CT transverse section, radial B-spline curves are used to approximate the ellipse-like acetabulum and femur head and stem. The femur neck is approximated as trapezoid-like and the pelvis horizontally symmetrical structure. The centers of the ellipse-like structures from transverse sections are used to determine 3D axes of the femur stem, head, and acetabulum. The ce

Stress analysis using anatomically realistic coronary tree.

Plaque rupture with superimposed thrombosis is the main cause of the acute coronary syndromes of unstable angina, myocardial infarction, and sudden death. Endothelial disruption leading to plaque rupture may relate to mechanical fatigue associated with cyclic flexion of plaques. A novel method is proposed to assess stress and strain distribution using the finite element (FE) analysis and in vivo patient-specific dynamic 3D coronary arterial tree reconstruction from cine angiographic images. The local stresses were calculated on the diseased arterial wall which was modeled as consisting of a ce

Comparison of brainstem hematoma volume evaluation techniques with a novel quantitative approach.

This study systematically compares various methods for calculating brainstem hematoma volume, and introduces a novel estimation method based on the maximum cross-sectional area. First, we assessed the accuracy of the Tada formula and 3D Slicer software for quantifying brainstem hematomas of different sizes and morphologies. The results revealed significant differences among methods, with the traditional Tada formula frequently overestimating hematoma volumes. We therefore propose an improved algorithm that substantially increases both the accuracy and reliability of hematoma volume assessment.

Prognostic role of radiological peritoneal cancer index in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: national cohort study.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) is a rare cancer of the mesothelial cells of the peritoneum. Computed tomography (CT) is considered the standard for first-line imaging of MPeM, diagnosis and risk stratification remains challenging. Peritoneal cancer index (PCI), as assessed by CT, is utilized in the prognostic assessment of other malignant intra-abdominal conditions; however, there is limited data concerning the utility of PCI in the diagnosis and workup of MPeM. We studied a retrospective cohort of all patients diagnosed with MPeM from 2000 to 2012 in Finland. CT and magnetic resonan

Multivariable analysis on factors associated with aneurysm rupture in patients with multiple intracranial aneurysms.

PURPOSE: Multiple intracranial aneurysms (MIA) occur in one-third of patients with intracranial aneurysms (IA), and have been previously associated with an overall worse prognosis. Risk factors for IA formation and rupture in patients with a single IA are well-known. However, risk factors associated with rupture in patients with MIA have been less studied. METHODS: We performed a retrospective search of patients with MIA identified by computed tomography angiography (CTA) within a 10-year period. Patients with > 1 saccular aneurysm with size ≥ 2.0 mm were included. The location, size, number,

Performance of computed tomography of the head to evaluate for skull fractures in infants with suspected non-accidental trauma.

BACKGROUND: Young children with suspected abusive head trauma often receive skull radiographs to evaluate for fractures as well as computed tomography (CT) of the head to assess for intracranial injury. Using a CT as the primary modality to evaluate both fracture and intracranial injury could reduce exposure to radiation without sacrificing performance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity of CT head with (3-D) reconstruction compared to skull radiographs to identify skull fractures in children with suspected abusive head trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective (2013-2014)
