Primary neuroendocrine differentiated mucinous adenocarcinoma of the vulva: case report and review of the literature.

Only a few cases on mucinous adenocarcinomas of the vulva have been reported. In this study, we present a case of a 75-year-old woman with a tumor in the left major labium. Because biopsy had shown formations of squamous cell carcinoma, radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinal and femoral lymph node dissection were performed. At that time, histology was interpreted as small-cell, anaplastic carcinoma, with focal epidermoid differentiation. Postoperative radiation therapy was performed. Sixteen months after surgery, the patient presented with bilateral breast carcinomas. Histology showed a sc

Distribution of neuropeptide-like immunoreactive nerve fibers in the canine larynx.

The distribution of neuropeptide immunoreactive nerve fibers in the canine larynx was examined. In the epithelium of supra- and subglottic regions, a dense distribution of substance P (SP)- and calcitonin gene-related polypeptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibers was observed. Some vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-IR intraepithelial nerve fibers were also seen in the subglottic region. In the laryngeal glands, a dense distribution of VIP-IR nerve fibers with a few SP- and enkephalin (ENK)-IR nerve fibers were found around the acini. In the walls of arteries in the lamina propria,

Lymphocyte regulation of neuropeptide gene expression after neuronal injury.

The neuropeptides vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and pituitary adenylyl cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) are induced strongly in neurons after several types of injury, and exhibit neuroprotective actions in vitro and in vivo. It is thought that changes in expression of neuropeptides and other molecules in injured neurons are mediated by new factors produced in Schwann and immune cells at the injury site, a loss of target-derived factors, or a combination of mediators. To begin to determine the role of the inflammatory mediators, we investigated axotomy-induced changes in VIP and PACAP g…

Co-existence of nitrergic, peptidergic and acetylcholine esterase-positive nerves in the pig lower urinary tract.

The distribution of NO synthase (NOS) immunoreactive nerves and the possible co-existence with other neurotransmitters were investigated in the pig lower urinary tract. NOS immunoreactive nerves were found in the muscle layer, in the lamina propria and around blood vessels. The density of NOS immunoreactive nerves was more prominent in the trigone and urethra than in the detrusor. All parts of the lower urinary tract were supplied by numerous acetylcholine esterase (AChE) positive nerves. The number of adrenergic nerves in the trigone and urethra was moderate to rich, whereas only very few adr

Inhibition of ACTH secretion in mouse pituitary tumor cells by activation of muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

Hormonally stimulated secretion of ACTH from AtT-20 mouse pituitary tumor cells is a cyclic AMP-mediated process. The presence of inhibitory cholinergic muscarinic receptors on these cells was recently reported, and in this study, the relationship between the activation of these receptors and the consequent inhibition of cyclic AMP formation and ACTH secretion was investigated. The muscarinic agent, oxotremorine, antagonized both cyclic AMP synthesis and ACTH secretion in response to corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), vasoactive intestinal peptide, a 27-amino acid peptide with an N-terminal…

Localisation of the neuropeptide PACAP and its receptors in the rat parathyroid and thyroid glands.

PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide) is widely distributed neuropeptide acting via three subtypes of receptors, PAC(1), VPAC(1) and VPAC(2). Here we examined the localisation and nature of PACAP-immunoreactive nerves in the rat thyroid and parathyroid glands and defined the distribution of PAC(1), VPAC(1) and VPAC(2) receptor mRNA's. In the parathyroid gland a large number of nerve fibres displaying PACAP-immunoreactivity were distributed beneath the capsule, around blood vessels and close to glandular cells. Most of the PACAP-nerves were sensory, since they co-stored CGR

Bladder activation: afferent mechanisms.

The major function of the lower urinary tract is to store and periodically evacuate urine from the bladder. This requires coordination of the smooth muscles of the bladder and urethra, and of the striated muscles of the outflow region and pelvic floor by a complex neural control system. Lumbosacral afferent fibers (pelvic afferents), but also afferents in the hypogastric and pudendal nerves, are of major importance for the regulation of the mechanisms for continence and micturition. In the bladder, afferent nerves have been identified suburothelially as well as in the detrusor muscle. Suburoth

The vascular architecture and innervation of the cerebral arteries in Leiothrix lutea.

The vascular architecture and innervation of the cerebral arteries in the robin-billed leiothrix, Leiothrix lutea, were studied using catecholamine fluorescence, acetylcholinesterase active staining, and immunohistochemical techniques. The cerebral arteries in Leiothrix lutea consisted of the cerebral carotid and the basilar systems. The cerebral carotid artery can be divided into the anterior and posterior rami. Due to poor development of the posterior ramus, the posterior cerebral artery originated from the anterior ramus, and an anterior communicating artery between the cerebroethmoidal art

Common ionic mechanisms of excitation by substance P and other transmitters in guinea-pig submucosal neurones.

1. Intracellular recordings were made from submucosal neurones and single-electrode voltage-clamp methods were used to record membrane currents. The actions of substance P (SP), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), muscarine, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), forskolin and nerve stimulation were studied. 2. Substance P, 5-HT (in the presence of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists), muscarine, VIP, forskolin and slow excitatory synaptic transmission all produced identical responses: an inward current associated with a membrane conductance decrease at the resting potential. The actions of any one occluded
