Hereditary essential tremor (ET) is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression and reduced penetrance. INTRODUCTION: Having a child with an orofacial cleft may be associated with a specific pattern of parenting. In order to investigate the parenting style, the present study assessed parent-child interactions during a problem-solving task performed under pressure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parent-child interactions were video recorded for 15 families with a child with a cleft lip and palate (CLP), which were then compared to 20 healthy families and 20 families with a child suffering from migraines. The children had to solve a puzzle within a specified time with either their mother or father.

Many cases of myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) are caused by mutations in the epsilon-sarcoglycan (SGCE) gene. We describe 3 children with a similar clinical picture of autosomal dominant M-D and an SGCE mutation in only one of them, suggesting that M-D is genetically heterogeneous.

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) produces clinical, biochemical and neuropathologic changes reminiscent of those which occur in idiopathic Parkinson's disease. 7-Nitroindazole (7-NI) is a relatively selective inhibitor of the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) that blocks MPTP neurotoxicity in mice. We now show that 7-NI protects against profound striatal dopamine depletions and loss of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the substantia nigra in MPTP-treated baboons. Furthermore, 7-NI protected against MPTP-induced motor and frontal-type cognitive deficits.

We measured interarytenoid notch height (IANH) in 20 young children who required direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia. By means of a specifically designed instrument, we found that the average IANH approximated 3 mm. Laryngeal incompetence on swallowing or in the presence of gastroesophageal reflux is associated with a low IANH (p < .0001). Therefore, IANH may be a measure of relative laryngeal incompetence.
