Core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme for Bacillus cereus group bacteria.

Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) employs a strategy where the set of orthologous genes common to all members of a group of organisms are used for phylogenetic analysis of the group members. The Bacillus cereus group consists of species with pathogenicity towards insect species as well as warm-blooded animals including humans. While B. cereus is an opportunistic pathogen linked to a range of human disease conditions, including emesis and diarrhoea, Bacillus thuringiensis is an entomopathogenic species with toxicity toward insect larvae, and therefore used as a biological pesticid

Bacillus cereus Subacute Native Valve Infective Endocarditis and Its Multiple Complications.

Bacillus cereus causing infective endocarditis (IE) in a native valve is an extremely rare event, but it is reported mostly in intravenous drug abusers and other risk factors as immunosuppression, malignancy, and valvular heart disease including prosthetic heart valves. We report a case of B.cereus native mitral valve infective endocarditis in a 58-year-old Sri Lankan male who is not a drug abuser who presented with painless hematuria with reduced urine output. During hospital stay, he developed frequent episodes of brief focal seizures. He had undergone multiple investigations that revealed s

Whole-Genome Characterization of Bacillus cereus Associated with Specific Disease Manifestations.

Bacillus cereus remains an important cause of infections, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. While typically associated with enteric infections, disease manifestations can be quite diverse and include skin infections, bacteremia, pneumonia, and meningitis. Whether there are any genetic correlates of bacterial strains with particular clinical manifestations remains unknown. To address this gap in understanding, we undertook whole-genome analysis of B. cereus strains isolated from patients with a range of disease manifestations, including noninvasive colonizing disease, superficial skin in

Genotypic heterogeneity of emetic toxin producing Bacillus cereus isolates from China.

Emetic toxin-producing Bacillus cereus (emetic B. cereus) is the third member of B. cereus group whose toxins are encoded by megaplasmids, beside anthrax and insecticidal toxins of B. anthracis and B. thuringiensis, respectively. A total of 18 emetic isolates collected from food poisoning events, clinical and non-random food samples in Zhejiang province of China, were analyzed by plasmid screening, pulse field gel electrophoresis, multilocus sequence typing, and toxic gene identification to investigate their genotypic diversity. In this study, 13 plasmid profile types, 14 pulse types and 6 dif

Bacillus cereus septicemia attributed to a matched unrelated bone marrow transplant.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is performed in more than 25,000 patients annually. Clinically significant bacterial transmission from HCT products is rare. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old male of Asian descent with chronic myelogenous leukemia developed sepsis leading to acute renal failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation during infusion of matched unrelated donor bone marrow. This product later tested positive for Bacillus cereus. DISCUSSION: This HCT product traveled 31 hours at room temperature before arriving at the transplant center. Reducing transport times,

Bacillus cereus meningitis complicating cerebrospinal fluid fistula repair and spinal drainage.

Non-anthrax Bacillus species are rare, but serious causes of bacterial meningitis in those either immunocompromised or treated with CSF diversion. Although resistant to first-line antibiotics, they usually respond to chloramphenicol. We report a case of fulminant Bacillus cereus meningitis that complicated lumbar spinal drainage which proved resistant to all first-line antibiotics including chloramphenicol.

Anthrax-specific "AP 50-like" phages isolated from Bacillus cereus strains.

Phages exerting a specific action on Bacillus anthracis were isolated from mitomycin C-induced concentrated lysates of 5 Bacillus cereus strains producing megacin A (phospholipase A). In electron micrographs the phages closely resembled the anthrax-specific, lipid containing phage AP 50 isolated earlier from soil sample. The phages were similar to AP 50 also in their antigenic and chemical structure, host range and sensitivity to organic solvents, detergents and caesium chloride. The DNA character of AP 50 nucleic acid was shown by agarose gel electrophoresis. AP 50 and related phages seem to

Diversity of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of cereulide-producing isolates of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus weihenstephanensis.

Bacillus cereus is an important foodborne pathogen causing diarrhoea, emesis and in, rare cases, lethal poisonings. The emetic syndrome is caused by cereulide, a heat-stable toxin. Originally considered as a rather homogenous group, the emetic strains have since been shown to display some diversity, including the existence of two clusters of mesophilic B. cereus and psychrotolerant B. weihenstephanensis. Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis, this research aimed to better understand the diversity and spatio-temporal occurrence of emetic strains originating from environmental o

UV-C and wet heat resistance of Bacillus thuringiensis biopesticide endospores compared to foodborne Bacillus cereus endospores.

Bacillus endospores (spores) are generally resistant to environmental and food processing-related stress including thermal and non-thermal processing in the food industry, such as pasteurization, and UV-C inactivation. Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystals and spores as the active substances in commercial biopesticides can also be introduced to vegetable foods and their food processing environment due to pre-harvest treatment of edible crops. The resistance of B. thuringiensis biopesticide spores in comparison to the genetically closely related foodborne B. cereus against heat and UV-C

Biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene by the mixed culture of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus vireti isolated from the petrochemical industry.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of compounds that pose threat to humans and animal life. Methods to reduce the amount of PAHs in the environment are continuously being sought. The bacterial consortium capable of utilizing benzo(a)pyrene as the sole source of carbon and energy was isolated from petrochemical soil. The isolates were identified as Bacillus cereus and Bacillus viretibased on morphological characterization, and 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. About 58.98% of benzo(a)pyrene at concentration of 500 mg l(-1) in mineral salts medium were removed by bacterial consortium. G

Multiparametric Quantitation of the Bacillus cereus Toxins Cereulide and Isocereulides A-G in Foods.

Consumption of food products contaminated with cereulide (1), a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, might cause intoxications with symptoms reported to range from indigestion pain and emesis to death. Recently, a series of structural variants, coined isocereulides A-G (2-8), were identified for the first time to be produced along with cereulide (1). The observation that isocereulide A (2) shows an ∼ 8-fold increased cytotoxicity when compared to 1 urges the development of analytical tools enabling an accurate quantitation of these toxins. Therefore, a rapid, sensitive, and robust stable isotope

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as an Indirect Sensing Approach for Bacillus cereus Detection.

Bacterial endospores are a major challenge in food safety due to their high resistance and potential to cause spoilage and foodborne illness. Current detection methods can be labor-intensive and require specialized instrumentation. A low-cost, label-free thermal sensing platform for indirect detection of Bacillus cereus endospores using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) targeting dipicolinic acid (DPA), a spore biomarker, was developed. The MIPs were synthesized by free-radical bulk polymerization, characterized by rebinding assays, and evaluated using the Heat Transfer Method (HTM). At 10

Antitumor, antioxidant, and antibiofilm activities of chitooligosaccharides by chitosanase from Bacillus cereus.

Chitooligosaccharides (COSs) are hydrophilic short oligomers produced by the action of microbial chitosanases on chitosan. The aim of this study is to assess the antitumor, antioxidant, and antibiofilm activities of bio-produced COSs from B. cereus strain isolated from Egyptian soil. To evaluate the cytotoxicity of COSs, an MTT assay was performed. To find that COSs exhibit antitumor activity against MCF-7, HepG-2, A549, and CACO-2 cell lines with mean IC50 of 818.8 µg/mL, 1845.9 µg/mL, 1293.9 µg/mL, and 1432.9 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, the antioxidant activity of COSs was measured by

Bacillus cereus is a key microbial determinant of intractable otitis media with effusion.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the mechanisms by which otitis media with effusion (OME) progresses to intractable OME is unclear. Since crosstalk between microbiome and host contributes to many diseases, we hypothesized that similar interactions could occur in the middle ear effusion (MEE) samples from patients with OME and influence intractable OME pathogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the microbial profile of MEE samples and to determine whether there were microbial differences between the MEE microbiota of patients with intractable OME and those with rapidly cured OME. METHODS: MEE samples we

Effects of Na+ adaptation on Bacillus cereus endospores inactivation and transcriptome changes.

As Bacillus cereus endospores exist in various vegetables grown in soil, the possibility of contamination in food products with high salt concentrations cannot be ignored. Recent studies revealed that harsh conditions affect the resistance of bacteria; thus, we investigated the developmental aspect of heat resistance of B. cereus after sporulation with high NaCl concentration. RNA sequencing was conducted for transcriptomic changes when B. cereus endospores formed at high salinity, and membrane fluidity and hydrophobicity were measured to verify the transcriptomic analysis. Our data showed tha
