Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common, congenital cardiovascular malformation and is associated with a number of conditions leading to increased morbidity and mortality, including aortic stenosis, aortic incompetence, endocarditis, aortic dissection and other cardiovascular malformations. Of 413 patients undergoing surgery for aortic valve disease, 42 were confirmed to have congenital bicuspid aortic valve. There were 24 males and 18 females, with a mean age of 54.9 +/- 14.6 years.
