Motion-corrected 3D-EPTI with efficient 4D navigator acquisition for fast and robust whole-brain quantitative imaging.

PURPOSE: To develop a motion estimation and correction method for motion-robust three-dimensional (3D) quantitative imaging with 3D-echo-planar time-resolved imaging. THEORY AND METHODS: The 3D-echo-planar time-resolved imaging technique was designed with additional four-dimensional navigator acquisition (x-y-z-echoes) to achieve fast and motion-robust quantitative imaging of the human brain. The four-dimensional-navigator is inserted into the relaxation-recovery deadtime of the sequence in every pulse TR (∼2 s) to avoid extra scan time, and to provide continuous tracking of the 3D head motio

Editorial: A New Spin on Magnetic Resonance Elastography.

The development of hepatic fibrosis is the hallmark of liver disease progression. Identifying fibrosis across the spectrum, from early stages to cirrhosis has become a major unmet need. Newer imaging techniques that measure liver elastography (stiffness) as a surrogate of fibrosis seem to outperform serum tests. The current study compares two-dimensional (2D) gradient-recalled echo magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to three-dimensional (3D) spin-echo echo-planar imaging MRE. 3D-SE-EPI MRE was able to image more liver volume in less time with fewer technical failures. The current study demo…

Magnetic resonance imaging of the canine brain at 7 T.

The purpose of this study was to describe relevant canine brain structures as seen on T2-weighted images following magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 7 T and to compare the results with imaging at 1.5 T. Imaging was performed on five healthy laboratory beagle dogs using 1.5 and 7 T clinical scanners. At 1.5 T, spin echo images were acquired, while gradient echo images were acquired at 3 T. Image quality and conspicuity of anatomic structures were evaluated qualitatively by direct comparison of the images obtained from the two different magnetic fields. The signal-to-nose ratio (SNR) and contra

Diffusion-weighted imaging in the evaluation of intracranial lesions.

Conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is able to show pathology early on and to provide the radiologist with some degree of lesion characterization based on the relaxation time of different tissues. Many times, however, conventional MR imaging is not capable of depicting abnormalities at a time when early therapy may be successful, or of differentiating among different types of lesions before surgery. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), a technique that is relatively new, is rapidly gaining popularity. Its increased use stems from the fact that many of the newer MR units are echo-planar c

Clinical comparison of single-shot EPI, readout-segmented EPI and TGSE-BLADE for diffusion-weighted imaging of cerebellopontine angle tumors on 3 tesla.

OBJECTIVE: The complex anatomical structures of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) pose a unique challenge to diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). This study aimed to compare the clinical utility of the prototypic 2D turbo gradient- and spin echo-BLADE-DWI (TGSE-BLADE-DWI) with that of readout-segmented echo-planar DWI (RESOLVE-DWI) and single-shot echo-planar DWI (SS-EPI-DWI) to visualize CPA anatomic structures and identify CPA tumors. METHODS: A total of 8 volunteers and 36 patients with pathological CPA tumors were enrolled to perform the three DWI sequences at 3 T. Scan time of TGSE-BLADE-DWI, RE

Motion-resolved four-dimensional abdominal diffusion-weighted imaging using PROPELLER EPI (4D-DW-PROPELLER-EPI).

PURPOSE: To develop a distortion-free motion-resolved four-dimensional diffusion-weighted PROPELLER EPI (4D-DW-PROPELLER-EPI) technique for benefiting clinical abdominal radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: An improved abdominal 4D-DWI technique based on 2D diffusion-weighted PROPELLER-EPI (2D-DW-PROPELLER-EPI), termed 4D-DW-PROPELLER-EPI, was proposed to improve the frame rate of repeated data acquisition and produce distortion-free 4D-DWI images. Since the radial or PROPELLER sampling with golden-angle rotation can achieve an efficient k-space coverage with a flexible time-resolved acquisition, the

Effect of motion outside the field of view on functional MR.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of objects moving outside the field of view on functional MR imaging. METHODS: Echo-Planar image sequences were acquired in the sagittal plane of a stationary phantom or of the head of a volunteer subject while a second phantom was moved periodically outside the field of view. The signal intensity changes in each pixel within the field of view were measured. RESULTS: Movement of the phantom outside the field of view produced signal intensity changes in the field of view that equaled or exceeded typical functional activation without the latency that characteriz

[The time-course change of brain activity during learning new movement patterns of pronunciation with orthodontic appliances and its correlation with self-evaluation of pronunciation difficulty: an fMRI study].

Pronunciation requires speed and accuracy, like many other fundamental activities such as breathing, eating, and walking. People can pronounce almost automatically without paying much attention to correctness, also like other activities. However, people may have to focus carefully on pronunciation when learning a foreign language, wearing dental appliances or rehabilitating after an injury or disease that affects speech. In the present study, we investigated neural changes underlying the process of learning new movement patterns of pronunciation in such cases. Nine healthy adults participated

Inverse T(2) contrast at 1.5 Tesla between gray matter and white matter in the occipital lobe of normal adult human brain.

T(2) of cortical gray matter is generally assumed to be longer than that of white matter. It is shown here that this is not the case in the occipital lobe, but that this effect is often obscured at lower resolution and concealed in standard T(2)-weighted images. Using a high-resolution (1 x 1.3 x 2 mm(3)) segmented EPI Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill sequence, T(2) relaxation times of the brain were measured at 1.5 T for eight healthy adult volunteers. The average T(2) values of cortical gray and white matter were found to be 88 +/- 2 and 84 +/- 3 msec in the frontal lobe, 84 +/- 2 and 83 +/- 3 msec

Non-invasive mapping of placental perfusion.

BACKGROUND: We aim to develop a clinical technique for the non-invasive measurement of placental perfusion, to enable early detection of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Pregnancies with this complication are characterised by low placental perfusion. METHODS: We measured placental perfusion by means of perfusion-sensitive echoplanar imaging (EPI); a rapid method of making magnetic resonance images. Perfusion measurements were done on six healthy volunteers with normal pregnancies and nine with pregnancies complicated by IUGR. Perfusion maps were created to assess the relation between p
