Absence of electrocardiographic change after prolonged application of a conducted electrical weapon in physically exhausted adults.

BACKGROUND: Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are used by law enforcement for control of subjects by causing neuromuscular incapacitation. There has been scrutiny of CEWs and their potential role in the occasional sudden death of subjects in custody. There is a hypothesized causal relationship due to induced cardiac dysrhythmia. Previous work has not shown dysrhythmia induction in resting humans. However, these devices are not often used on resting individuals in the field. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if exposure to a CEW in a physically exhausted human sample population caused detect

Epidermal hydration of psoriasis plaques and the relation to scaling. Measurement of electrical conductance and transepidermal water loss.

Seventy-seven plaques of ten patients with psoriasis vulgaris were studied with measurement of electrical conductance (3.5 MHz), measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and clinical scoring of erythema, induration and scaling. Uninvolved skin of the same body region served as control. Findings were very distinct with decreased conductance and increased TEWL. Plaques with no or mild scaling did not differ from grossly scaly plaques. Scales of psoriasis do not seem to exert any major occlusive effect on the water evaporation. The inverse relation between conductance and TEWL indicates r

Interactive effects of electrical conductivity and light intensity on growth, yield, and nutrient dynamics of hydroponic lettuce.

Precise management of nutrient solution properties, such as electrical conductivity (EC), and environmental factors, such as light intensity (LI), is essential for optimizing crop yield and quality in hydroponic production. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of two EC ranges (EC1: 1.5-2.0 dS m-1; EC2: 4.5-6.0 dS m-1) and three LI levels (L1 = 145, L2 = 185, and L3 = 240 μmol m-2 s-1) on the growth, yield, leaf mineral uptake, and nitrate accumulation of butterhead lettuce grown in hydroponic system under artificial lighting. The greatest leaf area (1338.31 cm2) and yield

Piezoelectric-Conductive Microcarrier Combined with Ultrasonic Driven Electrical Stimulation to Promote Sciatic Nerve Regeneration.

Electrical stimulation from electroactive bioma0terials is indispensable for peripheral nerve regeneration, but traditional invasive methods carry infection risks. Non-invasive techniques based on ultrasound and piezoelectric materials provide new solutions to this challenge. In this study, polydopamine (PDA) was used to surface-modify barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNPs), which were then combined with chitosan (CS) microcarriers to successfully fabricate composite microcarriers (BTNP@PDA/CS) with piezoelectric-conductive dual electroactivity for sciatic nerve defect repair. BTNP@PDA/CS piezo

Direct and capacitive electrical stimulation shapes neural progenitor cell survival and orientation on conductive scaffolds.

Electrical stimulation (ES) of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) on conductive biomaterials offers a promising strategy to enhance regenerative therapies for neurological disorders. In this study, we designed and evaluated two ES platforms, direct and capacitively coupled, using silver nanowire-integrated collagen scaffolds to investigate their effects on NPC orientation and viability. Direct stimulation promoted NPC alignment along the electric field, suggesting enhanced guidance potential for neural repair. In contrast, the capacitively coupled system did not alter cell morphology but improved

π-Conjugated Blatter Radicals: Molecular Structure-Driven Modulation of Optoelectronic Properties and Electrical Conductivity.

The influence of π-conjugation on optoelectronic properties, particularly electronic conductivity of air-stable 1,2,4-benzotriazinyl radicals (known as Blatter radicals), remains largely unexplored, yet is critical for advancing organic electronics. Herein, we elucidate the modulation of optoelectronic properties and electronic conductivities of Blatter radicals functionalized with varied conjugating units in two-terminal solid-state devices. The Blatter radicals 1N• and 3N• were synthesized via Pd(0)-catalyzed C─C coupling, while 2N• was synthesized via Pd(II)/Cu(I)-catalyzed C─C coupling, st

Exploring the relationship between larmor-frequency electrical conductivity, diffusivity, and tissue volume in the aging brain.

BACKGROUND: The aging brain undergoes various microstructural changes that influence its electrical properties. Conductivity, a measure of ion mobility, is particularly sensitive to these changes and can be assessed non-invasively using magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography (MREPT). Despite advancements in imaging techniques, the relationship between brain conductivity, diffusivity, and tissue volume in the context of aging and neurodegeneration remains incompletely understood. This study explores the relationships between electrical conductivity, diffusivity, and brain tissue vo

Mixed Ionic and Electronic Charge Transport in Conductive Protein Fibers Revealed with DC Electrical Measurements.

Naturally conductive protein nanowires have inspired efforts to engineer electrical conductivity into synthetic fibrous proteins for the development of bioelectronic materials and devices. A comprehensive analysis of charge transport in these systems requires a combination of various measurement methods, instruments and electrode designs. Measurements under direct current (DC) typically focus on charge transport without distinguishing between charged species, requiring alternating current (AC) and electrochemical methods to probe additional phenomena. Here, ionic and electronic charge transpor

Passive Hindlimb Cycling Enhances Tolerance of Cardiac Electrical Conduction in Rats with Spinal Cord Injuries.

High-level spinal cord injury (SCI) often disrupts supraspinal control of sympathetic input to the heart. The resulting imbalance in the autonomic nervous system increases the risk of developing cardiac arrhythmias. It was previously demonstrated that passive hindlimb cycling (PHLC) effectively maintains or improves bodily function including cardiovascular performance following SCI. However, it remains unclear whether the exercise can affect cardiac electrical disorders. To address this specific question, we complemented a complete SCI at a high-thoracic level in rats and then performed PHLC f

Exploring the electrical robustness of conductive textile fasteners for wearable devices in different human motion conditions.

Conventional snap fasteners used in clothing are often used as electrical connectors in e-textile and wearable applications for signal transmission due to their wide availability and ease of use. Nonetheless, limited research exists on the validation of these fasteners, regarding the impact of contact-induced high-amplitude artefacts, especially under motion conditions. In this work, three types of fasteners were used as electromechanical connectors, establishing the interface between a regular sock and an acquisition device. The tested fasteners have different shapes and sizes, as well as hav

Materials and Design Approaches for a Fully Bioresorbable, Electrically Conductive and Mechanically Compliant Cardiac Patch Technology.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Recently developed cardiac patches provide mechanical support and additional conductive paths to promote electrical signal propagation in the MI area to synchronize cardiac excitation and contraction. Cardiac patches based on conductive polymers offer attractive features; however, the modest levels of elasticity and high impedance interfaces limit their mechanical and electrical performance. These structures also operate as permanent implants, even in cases where their utility is limited to the healing period of t

A Multi-Scale Investigation of Global Electrical Heterogeneity: Effects of Body Habitus, Respiration, and Tissue Conductivity.

Extracardiac factors such as respiration, fluid overload and body habitus have important effects on the ECG voltage. Vectorcardiographic (VCG) Global Electrical Heterogeneity (GEH) is associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD). Risk of SCD is especially high in end-stage renal disease patients (ESRD) on dialysis. However, extracardiac factors challenge ECG interpretation in ESRD patients. The effects of extracardiac factors on GEH have not been fully studied. To1 assess effects of extracardiac factors on ECG, we conducted a multi-scale study. An experimental data of ESRD patients and a previou

The use of bladder neck electric conductance (BNEC) in the investigation and management of sensory urge incontinence in the female.

Measurement of urethral electric conductance can be used to detect the movement of urine along the urethra by registering a change in conductivity reading. This technique has been employed in patients complaining of urge incontinence and has shown movements at the bladder neck when urgency is appreciated. Patients with sensory urgency have been successfully managed by learning to control the movements at the bladder neck during a conductivity recording.

An experimental rat model of electric shock injury with isolated electric shock and water conduction: the histopathological changes on the skin and internal organs and the effect on biochemical parameters.

It is difficult to determine the cause of death in electric shock injuries when no trace can be determined on the skin, and this is accepted as a reason for negative autopsy. We aimed to determine useful parameters in the definition of the cause of deaths associated with electric shock and particularly those formed with water conduction. This study used a total of 42 rats, applied with fatal electric shock formed of isolated electric shock at 220 V and with water conduction. The serum NT-ProBNP and H-FABP levels were examined together with histopathological changes in the brain, cerebellum, br

Design parameters and electrical conductivity shape dissolved organic matter aromaticity in full-scale constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) often serve as final polishing systems before wastewater enters receiving waters, where active biogeochemical reactions can reshape dissolved organic matter (DOM) and influence various ecological processes in downstream aquatic systems. However, DOM variations and their associated factors in full-scale CWs remain poorly constrained. Combining a field survey of 57 sites across 14 full-scale CWs in Shandong, China, with laboratory experiments, this study examined changes in DOM characteristics, the key factors associated with these changes, and their potential roles.
