Between January 1987 and December 1990, 293 upper GI endoscopic procedures were performed in 219 neonates < 1 month of age. No lesion was found in 57 cases (26%; group 1), whereas esophagitis was present in 158 cases, alone in 45 cases (20.6%; group 2) and associated with gastritis in 113 cases (51.8%; group 3). The association of esophagitis with gastritis seems to be a specific feature of neonates and not older children. The presence of gastritis with esophagitis suggests that a primary peptic mechanism is unlikely to explain all endoscopic findings, although the presence of such a mechanism

Fiberoptic gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed on 52 patients between the ages of 2 months and 16 years. The procedures were safely and easily done with premedications consisting of meperidine, promethazine, and chlorpromazine, and atropine, with diazepam given at the time of the procedure. In Norway, different attitudes prevail to discontinuation of antiplatelet agents, such as ASA, NSAID, ADP-receptor inhibitors (clopidogrel and ticlopidine) phosphodiestase inhibitors (dipyridamole) and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors (abciximab and eptifibatide), before endoscopic procedures. The Norwegian Association of Gastroenterology have appointed a group, consisting of a medical and a surgical gastroenterologist, a haematologist, a cardiologist and a pharmacologist, to review literature concerning the issue in order to give a recommendation.

Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a safe, non invasive diagnostic modality for the evaluation of small bowel lesions. Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) is one of the most important indications of capsule endoscopy. Capsule endoscopy has a very high diagnostic yield especially if the bleeding is ongoing. This technique appears to be superior to other techniques for the detection of suspected lesions and the source of bleeding. Capsule endoscopy has been shown to change the outcome in patients with obscure gastrointestinal (GI) bleed.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is used to evaluate upper gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This article discusses the procedure, which may allow for the diagnosis of Crohn's disease of the esophagus, stomach, and/or duodenum. Biopsies of normal gastric mucosa in patients with indeterminate colitis may be helpful in making a diagnosis of Crohn's colitis. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy may allow for therapeutic intervention in terms of bleeding and stricturing disease.

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a transmissible form of spongiform encephalopathy believed to be contracted from the consumption of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) infected beef products. Doctors are optimistic in their perception of how acceptable endoscopy is for patients. An open-access upper gastrointestinal endoscopy service for general practitioners is described. Between July 1981 and May 1985, 391 endoscopies were performed on 354 patients. In contrast to the results of other studies, demand for endoscopy and the pick-up rate for major lesions has remained steady, and the number of requests for barium meals has fallen by almost a quarter.
