We previously demonstrated that 14 of 23 asymptomatic dairy farmers with positive precipitins and 5 of 20 without precipitins had an alveolar lymphocytosis (greater than 22%). To verify the outcome of this lymphocytosis, we restudied, 2 or 3 yr later, 27 of these subjects. In a tularemia epidemic during 1982 in northern Finland, 53 patients showed no peripheral portal of entry for infection or associated lymphadenopathy. Respiratory symptoms were observed in 72% of the patients. 26/38 cases had abnormal chest films. Hilar adenopathy was the most common finding (36%). A retrospective study of hospital visits for farm-associated lung injury in rural Otsego County, New York during an 11-yr period is reported herein. Extrinsic allergic alveolitis of the rural population is a relevant disease of the alpine region. Observations in a pulmonologic practice suggest that the disease may represent itself in a acute and a chronic form. Six patients with acute alveolitis, 8 cases of chronic farmer's lung, 16 cases of late disease stages and 33 patients of sensitization (with positive immunologic data) without overt disease are described. The workforce in many countries nowadays is becoming older due to demographic change. Compared with many other occupations, farmers often work until a higher age. This study analysed occupational accidents to farmers in Sweden from an age perspective using data on 223 work injuries on farms and 990 road accidents involving tractors. Cancer risk for farmers in Denmark and Italy was studied by linking occupational census data with incidence of cancer in Denmark and with cancer mortality in Italy. Farmers in the two countries had a consistent risk reduction for cancer of the lung, bladder, small intestine, colon, rectum, and prostate. The purpose of the present study was to describe the cancer pattern in a cohort of farmers in Iceland and to compare their cancer incidence to that of other Icelandic males. This is a retrospective cohort study. The study population was obtained from a register at the Farmers' Pension Fund and comprised 5922 men. Viewed as a whole the cohort shows a significant lower incidence for all tumours than expected.
