Animals respond to changes in power requirements during locomotion by modulating the intensity of recruitment of their propulsive musculature, but many questions concerning how muscle recruitment varies with speed across modes of locomotion remain unanswered. We measured normalized average burst EMG (aEMG) for pectoralis major and biceps brachii at different flight speeds in two relatively distantly related bat species: the aerial insectivore Eptesicus fuscus, and the primarily fruit-eating Carollia perspicillata These ecologically distinct species employ different flight behaviors but possess

Artificial light has altered nighttime environments, jeopardizing the fitness of organisms. While many nocturnal animals avoid artificial light, the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the behavioral and transcriptomic responses of least horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus pusillus) to artificial light. We manipulated three lighting conditions (i.e., dark control, white light, and green light) inside bat roost. We assessed behavioral responses and gene expressions in the adrenal gland-kidney complexes and brains of bats. Our analyses showed that whit

The emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in food-producing animals has provoked a great concern in the presence of MRSA in associated foodstuff. In this study, we have assessed for the first time the presence of MRSA in food confiscated from non-EU flights. We performed a search for MRSA among 195 food samples confiscated from passengers on flights from twenty-one non-EU countries in 2012 and 2013. One hundred and seventeen meat samples of diverse animal origin (including antelope, beef, chicken, duck, guinea pig, pork, rodents, and turkey), 75 dairy products (74 che

Comparing the changes revealed in the adrenals of rats subjected to weightlessness and artificial gravitation, it has been stated that rotation of the animals in the centrifuge, while flying (with an acceleration of lg), prevents development of morphological stress reaction as a response to landing. After the effect of weightlessness, return to normal gravitation is accompanied with definite signs of an acute stress-reaction in the rat adrenal cortex. Differences in the adrenal reaction of the animals of the groups compared speak in favour of the fact that application of artificial gravitation

Alcids showcase excellent aerial-aquatic locomotion abilities benefitting from the morphing wing. In the aerial environment, alcids fully extend their wings, while underwater, they partly fold the wings. In this article, we mimicked the wing morphology of the alcids family to explore the hydrodynamic advantage of the folded configuration in the aquatic environment and four three-dimensional-printed wings including any combination of with feather or without feather, and extended or folded were created. The steady-state experiment reveals that the extended wings of alcids double the lift, counte

Vertebrates communicate through a wide variety of sounds, but few mechanisms of sound production, besides vocalization, are well understood. During high-speed dives, male trainbearer hummingbirds (Lesbia spp.) produce a repeated series of loud snaps. Hypotheses for these peculiar sounds include the birds employing their elongated tails and/or striking their wings against each other. Each snap to human ears seems like a single acoustic event, but sound recordings revealed that each snap is actually a couplet of impulsive, atonal sounds produced ∼13 ms apart. Analysis of high-speed videos refute

The aim of this study was to compare the 2 manual catching methods in terms of injuries and behavior. Throughout 12 loadings on practical farms with the same standard, 1 container each was caught using the one-legged (1LCM) and 1 using the two-legged catching method (2LCM). The animals were filmed during loading to evaluate their behavior and subsequently examined regarding injuries. Wing flapping was observed more frequently in broilers caught with the 1LCM than 2 LCM. Carrying animals with neighbors (1 neighbor: P < 0.001; 2 neighbors: P < 0.001) and a grasping position at or above the tarsa

Insect wings consist almost entirely of lifeless cuticle; yet their veins host a complex multimodal sensory apparatus and other tissues that require a continuous supply of water, nutrients and oxygen. This review provides a survey of the various living components in insect wings, as well as the specific contribution of the circulatory and tracheal systems to provide all essential substances. In most insects, hemolymph circulates through the veinal network in a loop flow caused by the contraction of accessory pulsatile organs in the thorax. In other insects, hemolymph oscillates into and out of

Fuel economy matters to both animals and machines, as the cost of transport can determine where, when, and how far locomotion is possible. However, established estimates of these values for animal flight come from laboratories and treat the atmosphere as constant, even though free-flying animals routinely extract energy from atmospheric flows. Using high-resolution movement data, we estimate the cost of transport for 50 bird and bat species flying in the wild. Our results revise the classic ranking of locomotion costs, suggesting that flying can be cheaper than swimming though almost as costly

Using Drosophila melanogaster, we created the first animal models for myosin-based Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (FSS), a dominant form of distal arthrogryposis defined by congenital facial and distal skeletal muscle contractures. Electron microscopy of homozygous mutant indirect flight muscles showed normal (Y583S) or altered (T178I, R672C) myofibril assembly followed by progressive disruption of the myofilament lattice. In contrast, all alleles permitted normal myofibril assembly in the heterozygous state but caused myofibrillar disruption during aging. The severity of myofibril defects in hetero

INTRODUCTION: Adverse social experiences profoundly alter animal behavior, yet the processes underlying context-appropriate behavior selection based on prior social interactions remain poorly understood. Existing models capture statistical patterns but are not framed in mechanistic frameworks that explain individual variability and predict behavioral outcomes.
METHODS: We address this gap by modeling social defeat in mice as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), implementing a heterarchical agent architecture-a structured network of interacting modules balancing exploration

Long-term adaptations to spaceflight outside of low earth orbit (LEO), during deep space transit, and readaptations to partial gravity environments upon reaching a destination, are unclear. The combined effect of these adaptations to the LEO environment can result in declines in mobility and balance in astronauts during and after spaceflight. This study aimed to determine if there is a gravity threshold that protects from deficits in gait and performance. To do so, we exposed mice to four gravitational loading conditions (µg; 0.33 g; 0.67 g; and 1 g), induced by centrifugation, relative to pre

Throughout the evolutionary history of life, only three vertebrate lineages took to the air by acquiring a body plan suitable for powered flight: birds, bats, and pterosaurs. Because pterosaurs were the earliest vertebrate lineage capable of powered flight and included the largest volant animal in the history of the earth, understanding how they evolved their flight apparatus, the wing, is an important issue in evolutionary biology. Herein, I speculate on the potential basis of pterosaur wing evolution using recent advances in the developmental biology of flying and non-flying vertebrates. The

Sound analysis is an important field of research for improving precision livestock farming systems. If the information carried by livestock sounds is interpreted correctly, it could be used to improve management and welfare assessment in this field. Therefore, we hypothesized that the nasal vocalization of a mother cow could have a calming effect on conspecifics. The nasal vocalization in our study was recorded from a mother cow (not part of the test herd) while it was licking its day-old calf. The raw sound was analyzed, cleaned from noises, and the most representative vocalization was length

Birds' extraordinary aerial agility and environmental interaction enable complex tasks such as mid-air hunting, perching, and nest-building, inspiring the development of advanced aerial robots with similar manipulation capabilities. However, existing platforms often face challenges such as large size, heavy payloads, end-effector torque interference, and limited functionality, severely restricting their practical deployment. Drawing inspiration from the biological, structural, and actuation characteristics of human hands, we propose a hand-like robot that integrates flight and grasping, demons

Landing on a moving target is challenging for flying animals, particularly under dynamic outdoor conditions. For pollinators such as bumblebees, wind-induced flower motion adds substantial complexity to landing manoeuvres. Here, we investigate how bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) land on laterally oscillating flowers. Using high-speed stereoscopic videography, we quantified three-dimensional flight kinematics of 48 bumblebees approaching a sinusoidally moving flower-mimic and analysed their control strategies using system-identification and control-theoretic modelling. Landing dynamics were cons

Storms can cause widespread seabird stranding and wrecking,1,2,3,4,5 yet little is known about the maximum wind speeds that birds are able to tolerate or the conditions they avoid. We analyzed >300,000 h of tracking data from 18 seabird species, including flapping and soaring fliers, to assess how flight morphology affects wind selectivity, both at fine scales (hourly movement steps) and across the breeding season. We found no general preference or avoidance of particular wind speeds within foraging tracks. This suggests seabird flight morphology is adapted to a "wind niche," with higher wing

Insects are remarkable flyers and capable of navigating through highly cluttered environments. We tracked the head and thorax of bumblebees freely flying in a tunnel containing vertically oriented obstacles to uncover the sensorimotor strategies used for obstacle detection and collision avoidance. Bumblebees presented all the characteristics of active vision during flight by stabilizing their head relative to the external environment and maintained close alignment between their gaze and flightpath. Head stabilization increased motion contrast of nearby features against the background to enable

The Euwallacea fornicatus species complex (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Xyleborini) is a group of four cryptic ambrosia beetle species. Native to Asia, several members of the complex have invaded other continents, where they cause significant economic losses to agricultural crops (e.g., avocado) and natural ecosystems. We were primarily interested in developing management strategies by focusing on the flight behavior of the beetles. Thus, seasonal differences in flight activity were assessed using panel traps baited with a commercial quercivorol lure, placed in infested avocado orcha

The synchronization of flight mechanics with respiration and echolocation call emission by bats, while economizing these behaviors, presumably puts compressive loads on the cartilaginous rings that hold open the respiratory tract. Previous work has shown that during postnatal development of Artibeus jamaicensis (Phyllostomidae), the onset of adult echolocation call emission rate coincides with calcification of the larynx, and the development of flight coincides with tracheal ring calcification. In the present study, I assessed the level of reinforcement of the respiratory system in 13 bat spec
