RATIONALE: The intrauterine device is one of the effective, safe, convenient, economical, and reversible contraceptive methods. Although its contraceptive effect is definite, some female patients may experience complications such as expulsion, bleeding, and pregnancy with the device in place. Rectal perforation is one of the rare and serious complications, which can lead to complications such as abdominal infection and intestinal adhesions, severely affecting the quality of life of patients.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 34-year-old female was sent to the Department of Gastroenterology with noticeable

In this case a patient presented with an intrauterine device (IUD) which was displaced into the sigmoid. The IUD was successfully removed through a proctoscope under laparoscopic guidance. Displacement of IUD into the sigmoid is a rare complication and should be treated proactively.

RATIONALE: Uterine perforation is a serious complication of intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) placement. However, as complete uterine perforation and extrauterine migration may remain asymptomatic, thorough localization of the IUD is important prior to reinsertion.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 33-year-old patient who has had 4 IUD insertions, wherein the location of the first IUD (inserted 14 years ago) was not identified prior to reinsertion and replacement of the subsequent three. She presented to hospital with a 6-month history of abdominal pain. Pelvic ultrasonography (US), radiography, hyst

BACKGROUND Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) are commonly used. Although IUCD use is considered safe, one adverse event is uterine perforation and its migration into surrounding organs. Migrations into the urinary bladder and the intestine have been sometimes reported. We here report a very rare case in which an IUCD migrated into the stomach; gastric endoscopy incidentally revealed the IUCD half embedded and half in the gastric lumen. To our knowledge, this is the second report ever of IUCD migration into the stomach. CASE REPORT A 47-year-old woman with BMI 36.2 visited us as a candi

OBJECTIVES: To describe, from the patient's point of view, the factors influencing the occupational trajectory of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: This was a qualitative study designed using grounded theory with constant comparison. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 patients who fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology or Leroy-Medsger criteria for SSc.
RESULTS: Based on our interviews, we found that the occupational trajectory of patients with SSc is influenced by the continuous interplay between four groups of factors. The first group conc

The types Dana super and Copper T intra-uterine devices (IUD) were reliably localised by ultrasonic B-scanning in 100 patients. Five dislocalisations were recorded and one erroneous interpretation in a case of uterus myomatosus. The method was found to be applicable to screening test and is recommended particularly for the following cases: clinically undetectable thread, following insertion, before removal of IUD, and in early pregnancy by the tenth gestational week.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether women with intrauterine devices (IUDs) embedded in the myometrium or cervix have a narrower fundal transverse endometrial diameter as seen on 3-dimensional (3D) sonography compared to women whose IUDs are in a normal location.
METHODS: A sonographer blinded to the study hypothesis retrospectively evaluated the 3D images and reconstructed coronal views of the uterine cavity in 172 consecutive women who had an IUD in the uterus. The width of the endometrial cavity at the fundus of the uterus was measured transversely on the rendered

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely utilized contraceptive method. In cases of uterine rupture, an IUD can migrate to the intra-abdominal or pelvic cavity, leading to various complications such as gastrointestinal perforation. The aim of this study was to report a case of a 29-year-old woman presented with acute left lumber pain. A computerized tomography scan revealed a left para tubal collection measuring 5x6cm, with the IUD located outside the uterine cavity and penetrating the rectum. Surgical intervention was performed, resulting in the complete retrieval of the device and closure o

Intrauterine device (IUD) is the mainstay of family planning methods in developing countries. However, it is associated with severe complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs. Although perforation of the uterus is not rare, migration to the sigmoid colon is exceptional. We here report a case of IUD migration into sigmoid colon; this was removed via low endoscopy. The study involved a 45-year-old woman using an IUD who presented with pelvic pain associated with a feeling of pelvic heaviness 6 years later of insertion. Clinical examination was without abnormalit

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus and very little published guidance on the management of a low-lying or malpositioned intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) or system (IUS).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A short e-mail questionnaire sent to senior medical staff working in contraceptive services confirmed the variation in views and management of this clinical area. Almost all respondents would replace an IUD/IUS lying either totally or partially in the cervical canal. The nearer the device was to the fundus the more likely respondents were to leave it in situ and there was less concern if the

Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a common birth control method. It is safe but can be associated with serious complications including migration into the peritoneal cavity and penetration into other intra-abdominal and pelvic viscera; most commonly the rectosigmoid colon. Different retrieval methods including endoscopy, laparoscopy or open abdominal surgery have been described. We report the case of 38-year-old woman who became pregnant shortly after insertion of the IUCD 6 years prior to presentation. She delivered vaginally and 'expulsion' of the device was assumed. Some 4 years la

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare removal timing, techniques, and success of malpositioned intrauterine device (IUDs) to nonmalpositioned IUDs.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of IUD users with ultrasound performed between July 2014 and July 2017 within one medical system. We used Fisher exact and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests to compare clinical characteristics and IUD removal details between patients with malpositioned and nonmalpositioned IUDs.
RESULTS: Of 1759 ultrasounds reporting the presence of an IUD, 436 described IUD malposition. Of these, 150 described the I

Malpositioned intrauterine devices (IUDs) are not yet a well recognized cause of acute pelvic pain. Correct identification relies on recognizing key imaging findings such as low-lying or endocervical positioning, and an understanding that acute pelvic pain may be the result of a malpositioned IUD. We report the case of a 28-year-old sexually active female (she/her/hers) with a history of a malpositioned IUD, who presented with sudden onset, unprovoked, right sided pelvic pain. She denied hematuria, dysuria, vaginal discharge, or vaginal bleeding. On physical examination she noted right-sided p

BACKGROUND: The Implanon NXT is a commonly used contraceptive. Incorrect localization of the implant can cause complications.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 41-year-old woman is seen in the gynaecology outpatient clinic with a request to remove a recently placed Implanon NXT because of worsening mood symptoms. The implant can't be found on physical and ultrasound examination. Duringsurgicalexplorationthe implant is not found at theinsertion site' By means of X-ray scanning the implant becomes visible around the humeral head. The implant appears to be located in the cephalic vein and is subsequently remo
