Human onchocerciasis in the lower Jos Plateau, central Nigeria: the prevalence, geographical distribution and epidemiology in Akwanga and Lafia local government areas.

An investigation of human infection with Onchocerca volvulus and the resulting clinical disease was carried out for the Nigerian National Onchocerciasis Control Programme between July and August 1989 [corrected]. The survey covered 10.6% of the rural population in 41 savanna villages of central Nigeria. Of the 8451 self-selected individuals examined, 900 (10.6%) had skin microfilariae (Mf). There were differences between villages in both endemicity and intensity of infection, but in general the number of both Mf carriers and cases of clinical onchocerciasis increased with age. The disease in t

Evidence for stopping mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis in some, but not all local government areas of Plateau and Nasarawa States, Nigeria.

An average of six annual rounds of ivermectin and albendazole were distributed in Plateau and Nasarawa States, Nigeria, to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. From 2007 to 2008, population-based surveys were implemented in all 30 local government areas (LGAs) of the two states to determine the prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti antigenemia to assess which LGA mass drug administration (MDA) could be halted. In total, 36,681 persons from 7,819 households were examined for filarial antigen as determined by immunochromatographic card tests. Overall antigen prevalence was 3.05% (exact upper 95% confide

Local US officials' views on the impacts and governance of AI: Evidence from 2022 and 2023 survey waves.

This paper presents a survey of local US policymakers' views on the future impact and regulation of AI. Our survey provides insight into US policymakers' expectations regarding the effects of AI on local communities and the nation, as well as their attitudes towards specific regulatory policies. Conducted in two waves (2022 and 2023), the survey captures attitudinal changes within the six months following the public release of ChatGPT and the subsequent surge in public awareness of AI. Local policymakers express a mix of concern, optimism, and uncertainty about AI's impacts, anticipating signi

Plasma membrane topography governs the 3D dynamic localization of IgM B cell antigen receptor clusters.

B lymphocytes recognize bacterial or viral antigens via different classes of the B cell antigen receptor (BCR). Protrusive structures termed microvilli cover lymphocyte surfaces, and are thought to perform sensory functions in screening antigen-bearing surfaces. Here, we have used lattice light-sheet microscopy in combination with tailored custom-built 4D image analysis to study the cell-surface topography of B cells of the Ramos Burkitt's Lymphoma line and the spatiotemporal organization of the IgM-BCR. Ramos B-cell surfaces were found to form dynamic networks of elevated ridges bridging indi

Studies on circulating immune complexes. 3. Factors governing the ability of circulating complexes to localize in blood vessels.

The relationship between certain physicochemical properties of circulating immune complexes and their ability to localize in vessel walls during a state of increased permeability was studied. The ability to become deposited was related to the large size of complexes, rather than to their net charge or to a specific affinity between complexes and structures of vessel walls. Soluble complexes with sedimentation rates greater than 19S were capable of being entrapped along the vessel wall membranes, while complexes smaller than this were not. These large complexes were removed rapidly from the cir

Local policy governance arrangements and COVID-19-related mortality in municipalities in Japan: a cross-sectional ecological study.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19-related mortality varied substantially within and across countries, which may not be fully explained by demographic and clinical differences. Some studies suggest that local governors' ideology has a substantial effect on mortality because of their political stances for and against the stringency of public health interventions. However, recent research indicates that stringency is not consistently related to lower mortality. This study investigated whether regional differences in COVID-19 mortality are attributable to differences in local governance arrangements for coll

From plug-and-play to institution-calibrated radiology AI: a practical framework for operationalizing local validation, monitoring and governance.

Radiology artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly developed on large external datasets and deployed across institutions, but real-world model performance may vary substantially after implementation. Imaging AI interacts with a local ecosystem shaped by scanner hardware, acquisition protocols, reconstruction methods, technologist practices, disease prevalence, patient demographics, reporting conventions, and clinical workflow. These factors can produce domain shift, degrade calibration, alter false-positive and false-negative patterns, and affect clinical utility. In this article, we argue
