Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is an exceptionally rare malignant odontogenic neoplasm representing the aggressive end of the calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor spectrum, with fewer than 50 well-characterized cases reported in the English-language literature and a marked predilection for Asian males in the fifth to seventh decades of life. A 38-year-old African American female presented with an expansile anterior mandibular radiolucency initially misdiagnosed as mandibular tori, then as a calcifying odontogenic cyst on incisional biopsy; progressive neurological symptoms and lesion g

High-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary gland in a bull.

Salivary gland neoplasia is uncommon in veterinary species and has rarely been reported in cattle. Adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and pleomorphic carcinoma have been described in the parotid gland of dairy cows. Here we describe a case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a bull. The bull had a chronic history of caudal mandibular soft tissue swelling. Postmortem examination revealed a 30 × 30-cm mass with a caseonecrotic center, hemorrhage and necrosis of the ipsilateral cervical musculature, osteolysis of the right paracondylar process of the skull and right horn base, pulmona

Management of a Life Threatening Bleeding Following Extraction of Deciduous Second Molar Related to a Capillary Haemangioma.

Various forms of vascular lesion affect the head and neck region. The head and neck vascular lesions are classified into neoplasms and malformations. Neoplasm presents either as hemangioma or lymphangioma; neoplasm usually presents in young age compared with vascular malformation. A 9-year-old female patient presented to the outpatient clinic referred from the department of pedodontics after extraction of a right mandibular second deciduous molar. Extraction was done by dental GP in outpatient clinic. Massive bleeding followed the extraction. Bleeding was controlled by electrocoagulation of bl

BRAF p.V600E-negative low-grade adenocarcinoma of the mandible with features of sialadenopapillary ductal tumor and prominent mucinous differentiation: report of a unique case.

Cutaneous tubular adenoma (TA), also known as tubulopapillary hidradenoma, is a rare benign sweat gland tumor. In the oral cavity, 2 groups of glandular neoplasms morphologically similar to cutaneous TA have been previously described, under the names tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible (TPHLTM) and sialadenoma papilliferum-like intraductal papillary tumor (SP-IPT), respectively. Recent evidence suggests that sialadenoma papilliferum, SP-IPT, and TPHLTM may form a biological continuum, and a unifying term, sialadenopapillary ductal tumor (SDT), has been proposed for these les

Orthognathic surgery with removal of lipoma in the asymmetric mandibular prognathism of a patient with a mandibular bone defect due to intramuscular lipoma on the medial aspect of the ramus: a case report.

Lipomas, the most common soft-tissue mesenchymal neoplasms in adults, are characterized by the proliferation of mature white adipocytes without cytologic atypia. Lipomas are rarely observed in the head and neck region. We present a case of resection and orthognathic surgical removal of an intramuscular lipoma of the mandible with involvement of the mandibular ramus and condylar head and neck. An 18-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for orthognathic surgery for the management of facial asymmetry and mandibular prognathism. The patient did not present with facial swelling, pai

Multidisciplinary approach to follicular thyroid carcinoma with giant mandibular and multiple sites metastases Case report.

UNLABELLED: Multidisciplinary approach to follicular thyroid carcinoma with giant mandibular and multiple sites metastases. Case report Metastatic tumors generally have poor prognosis, with short survival period and rarely indication to surgical treatment. In case of thyroid-differentiated cancer with distant metastases, prognosis is usually better, because of the possibility of treating metastasis by Radio Ablation by 131Iodine, after surgery. We report the case of a 65 years old woman, presenting with a giant mandibular metastasis from follicular thyroid carcinoma, originating from a cervico

T-Cell/Histiocyte-Rich Large B-Cell Lymphoma: Report of the First Case in the Mandible.

T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma (THRBCL) is an uncommon subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is a predominant nodal neoplasm; however, extranodal sites, such as the spleen, liver and bone marrow, can be involved at diagnosis. However, only one case of primary THRLBCL in the jaws have been reported. We herein describe a 29-year-old female patient who presented with a swelling of the right mandible that had grown rapidly over the previous 2 months. Periapical and panoramic radiographs showed a multilocular osteolytic lesion located in the mandibular periapical region of the canine

Leiomyosarcoma of the infratemporal fossa with perineurial spread along the right mandibular nerve: a case report.

Leiomyosarcomas are malignant tumors displaying strong smooth muscle differentiation. They can often develop within the GI tract and myometrium, but are particularly rare in the head and neck. Perineurial spread of head and neck cancer is observed in patients with neoplasms of the skin (squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) or skin appendages (adenoid cystic carcinoma). We report the case of a woman who presented with diplopia and headaches. MRI showed an infratemporal mass lesion and faint enhancement tracking along the mandibular nerve into the wall of the right cavernous sinus. A nerve biopsy

Huge facial desmoid tumors with neck extension: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoid tumors are very rare, benign fibrous neoplasms arise from the musculoaponeurotic structures throughout the body. CASE REPORT: The patient was a seven-year old boy with a large mandibular mass growing over a period of six months. His CT-scan showed a large mass, 13 cm in diameter in the cheek area extending to the neck and trachea. Biopsy was compatible with desmoid fibromatosis. He was given neoadjovant treatment with vinblastin and methotrexate. The patient underwent a tracheostomy. Then a complete hemimandibulectomy and submandibular gland excision was performed. Final

Gingival plasma cell granuloma.

Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive lesion composed of polyclonal plasma cells. It manifests primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various other anatomic locations like the oral cavity. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the tongue, lip, oral mucosa and gingiva have been reported in the past. This case presents a 54-year-old female with chronic periodontitis and mandibular anterior gingival overgrowth treated by Phase I therapy (scaling and root planing) and excisional biopsy. Histological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltrate containing sheets of plasma cells. Immu

Malignant neoplasms metastatic to gingivae.

Malignant neoplasms metastatic to the gingivae are rare. Our review of the literature revealed only eight acceptable examples. We are reporting two additional cases. One patient was a 58-year-old man with an adenocarcinoma of the lung which metastasized bilaterally to the maxillary gingiva. The second patient was a 27-year-old man with a synovial sarcoma which metastasized to multiple sites in the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. Clinically, gingival metastatic lesions are most often confused with hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, giant-cell granuloma, and pepripheral fibroma. They usually occu

Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Mandible: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCs) are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck region. They originate either primarily from preexisting cartilage or secondarily from Paget's disease and fibrous dysplasia. In the head and neck region, the larynx, maxilla, and nasal cavity are the most common sites. Mandibular chondrosarcoma is quite rare. On CT scan, it appears as a lobulated mass containing a chondroid matrix. Adequate tissue sampling is essential for accurate histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis with its mimickers. The prognosis of MC is c

Extended and unusual indications in jaw reconstruction with the fibula flap: An overview based on our 30-year experience.

Since the introduction of fibula flap as a reconstructive technique, an evolution of indications has been observed. Our first report of a traumatic mandibular reconstruction using fibula flap was in 1992. The vast majority of indications for surgery, are: malignant tumors, benign neoplasms, osteoradionecrosis and traumas. Nevertheless, extended indications have been described such as the treatment of dentoalveolar defect without bone discontinuity or reconstruction of maxilla defect up to type III (A and B), according to Cordeiro's classification. Unusual indications include cleft palate malfo

Diagnostic and surgical aspects of central hemangioma of mandible: a surgical approach for the reconstruction of mandible.

Intraosseous vascular lesions are rare lesions, accounting for 0.5-1% of all intraosseous tumors. They were found to be affecting the second decade of life, more frequent in women. The frequency found affecting the vertebral column and skull; the mandible is a quite rare location. At present, according to the World Health Organization, these lesions are now considered as benign vasoformative neoplasms of endothelial origin. However, the origin of the central hemangioma is debatable. Some authors state it as a true neoplasm, few state it is a hamartoma. On examination, the patient may or may no

Twenty years of experience with lesions involving the temporomandibular joint and adjacent structures complex.

With their close anatomical relationship, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), mandibular ramus, skull base, ear, and infratemporal fossa make up a complex structure that may collectively be referred to as the 'TMJ and adjacent structures complex' (TASC). This study presents the neoplasms that may be encountered in the TASC region and their classification, which may be useful for the surgical treatment. Data of 1022 consecutive patients treated with resection of TASC neoplasms from May 2000 to October 2022 were reviewed. Pathology outcomes were classified according to the World Health Organizati

Unicystic Ameloblastoma: A case report.

Purpose Radiolucent neoplasms can be identified on dental radiographs in asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. Examples of these lesions include dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and ameloblastoma. Many of these lesions require a histologic examination to render the definitive diagnosis. In terms of the ameloblastoma, there are four distinct types of this tumor. These include the conventional ameloblastoma, unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), extraosseous/peripheral ameloblastoma, and metastasizing ameloblastoma. The purpose of this report is to present a case report of a

Metastatic mandibular ameloblastoma of the lung ten years after primary resection: A rare case report.

Ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm of the jaw. It usually behaves as a benign, slow growing tumour of the oral cavity with a high recurrence rate, especially when it is inadequately resected. A small proportion of ameloblastomas metastasize to distant organs, with lungs representing the most common site of metastatic spread. In this report, we present the case of a middle-aged man with two pulmonary nodules and a history of mandibular ameloblastoma excised 10 years prior to this radiological finding. Following resection and histopathological analysis of the lung lesion, a diagnosis o

Mandibular metastasis of cutaneous melanoma.

Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of melanocytes that can metastasize to every organ of the body, but metastasis to the oral cavity is uncommon. We describe a case of metastatic malignant melanoma to the mandible in a 33-years-old woman. The patient had a 2 cm × 4 cm firm, ulcerated nodule, distal to the second mandibular right molar. Incisional biopsy revealed epithelioid cells and immunohistochemistry was positive for HMB-45, S-100 protein and vimentin. The patient was referred to the local cancer hospital for treatment but died 3 months later. Metastatic malignant melanomas of the oral cavit
