Enhancement of the adolescent murine musculoskeletal system using low-level mechanical vibrations.

Mechanical signals are recognized as anabolic to both bone and muscle, but the specific parameters that are critical to this stimulus remain unknown. Here we examined the potential of extremely low-magnitude, high-frequency mechanical stimuli to enhance the quality of the adolescent musculoskeletal system. Eight-week-old female BALB/cByJ mice were divided into three groups: baseline controls (BC, n = 8), age-matched controls (AC, n = 12), and whole body vibration (WBV, n = 12) at 45 Hz (0.3 g) for 15 min/day. Following 6 wk of WBV, bone mineralizing surfaces of trabeculae in the proximal metap…

[Missed injuries of the musculoskeletal system in multiple trauma--a retrospective study].

In order to quantify frequency, localisation and consequences of missed musculoskeletal injuries in multiple injured patients, 323 cases were retrospectively analyzed. 40 primarily missed injuries were found, 12 of them in patients, who had been transferred from another hospital. This rate of 12.4% corresponds with the literature. Four regions are mainly affected: 1. the cervical spine, especially the cervicothoracic transition, 2. the shoulder, 3. the ligaments of the knee especially with femur or tibia fractures at the same time, and 4. the forefoot. About half of the primary missed injuries

Musculoskeletal and tendinous details of selected anomalies in the locomotor system of anurans.

Previous studies on anuran anomalies predominantly examine isolated cases or focus on external and skeletal features. Our study analyzes a comprehensive sample collected from 1991 to 2017, examining the muscle-tendon system in 24 anuran species across adult, juvenile, and metamorphic stages. This extensive sample size allows us to investigate consistent anomaly patterns across different developmental stages and anuran families, exploring potential common developmental or genetic factors. Our detailed anatomical examination, encompassing musculature, tendons, and skeletal structures, revealed t

[Analysis of Musculoskeletal Systems and Their Diseases. Pathology and therapy for skeletal disorder].

There are a lot of skeletal disorders, and the pathogenesis underlying those diseases is varied. However, mechanisms underlying some disorders, particularly osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, were, at least in part, clarified and therapeutic targets for those diseases were identified. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha was identified to be required for osteoclast activation in postmenopausal osteoporosis, while signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 was demonstrated to contribute for development of chronic arthritis and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis.

Local and Systemic Side Effects of Corticosteroid Injections for Musculoskeletal Indications.

Corticosteroid injections can be associated with a range of potential side effects, which may be classified as local or systemic and further stratified as immediate or delayed in onset. Radiologists performing image-guided musculoskeletal injections should recognize the potential side effects of corticosteroid medication when counseling patients before injection and consider such side effects in planning individual injections. This Review summarizes the available evidence regarding the local and systemic side effects of corticosteroid injections performed for musculoskeletal indications. Local

A systemic provascular response in bone marrow to musculoskeletal trauma in mice.

Post-natal vasculogenesis, the process by which vascular committed bone marrow stem cells or endothelial precursor cells migrate, differentiate and incorporate into the nacent endothelium and thereby contribute to physiological and pathological neurovascularisation, has stimulated much interest. Its contribution to neovascularisation of tumours, wound healing and revascularisation associated with ischaemia of skeletal and cardiac muscles is well established. We evaluated the responses of endothelial precursor cells in bone marrow to musculoskeletal trauma in mice. Bone marrow from six C57 Blac

Ultrashort Echo Time Quantitative Susceptibility Source Separation in Musculoskeletal System: A Feasibility Study.

This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of ultrashort echo time (UTE)-based susceptibility source separation for musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging, enabling discrimination between diamagnetic and paramagnetic tissue components, with a particular focus on hemophilic arthropathy (HA). Three key techniques were integrated to achieve UTE-based susceptibility source separation: Iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation for B0 field estimation, projection onto dipole fields for local field mapping, and χ-separation for quantitative susceptibility ma

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging in the Musculoskeletal System: Evolving Role in Modern Imaging Practice.

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has evolved from a niche research sequence into an increasingly valuable adjunct to conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology. By providing qualitative and quantitative information on tissue microstructure through assessment of water diffusion and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping, DWI offers functional insights beyond conventional morphological imaging. We aim to present the current evidence for DWI in MSK imaging organised around established applications and emerging applications, with particular emphasis on c

Modern Low-Field MRI of the Musculoskeletal System: Practice Considerations, Opportunities, and Challenges.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides essential information for diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders. Although most musculoskeletal MRI examinations are performed at 1.5 and 3.0 T, modern low-field MRI systems offer new opportunities for affordable MRI worldwide. In 2021, a 0.55 T modern low-field, whole-body MRI system with an 80-cm-wide bore was introduced for clinical use in the United States and Europe. Compared with current higher-field-strength MRI systems, the 0.55 T MRI system has a lower total ownership cost, including purchase price, installation, and maintenance. Al

Fasciae of the musculoskeletal system: MRI findings in trauma, infection and neoplastic diseases.

The fascial system is a continuum of connective tissues present everywhere throughout the body that can be locally involved in a large variety of disorders. These disorders include traumatic disorders (Morel-Lavallée lesion, myo-aponeurotic injuries, and muscle hernia), septic diseases (necrotizing and non-necrotizing cellulitis and fasciitis), and neoplastic diseases (superficial fibromatosis, desmoid tumors, and sarcomas). The current pictorial review aims to focus on these localized disorders involving the fasciae of the musculoskeletal system and their appearance at MRI.

[Clinical administration of platelet-rich plasma and growth factors to the musculoskeletal system].

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and growth factors have been increasing in popularity for the orthopedic treatment of degenerative and traumatic diseases. The treatment concept is based on the substitution of growth-inducing substances in tissues with low or absent regeneration capacity (cartilage, tendons) as well as for the induction or further acceleration of growth and regeneration (bone, muscle). This review article provides an overview on the clinical feasibility of usage and a summary of the current study situation.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system. Part 8. The spine, section 2.

Magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionized the noninvasive evaluation of degenerative disc disease and its complications. Compared with computed tomography and computed tomographic myelography, magnetic resonance allows specific determination of the nature of disc protrusions and other degenerative related soft tissues about the spine. Magnetic resonance offers the most complete evaluation of specific degenerative disorders including degenerative facet disease, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, spontaneous lumbar epidural hematomas, and juvenile discogenic disease.

[Late sequelae after treatment of sarcomas and solitary metastases in the musculoskeletal system].

This review addresses the treatment of malignant musculoskeletal tumours associated with significant late effects. Surgical resection and reconstruction may result in chronic pain, reduced muscle strength, limited joint mobility, mechanical failure of implants, and need for reoperation. Radiotherapy increases the risk of wound complications, fibrosis, fractures, and secondary malignancies, while chemotherapy may cause cardiac, renal, and skeletal toxicity. Amputation and limb-sparing procedures alike are linked to functional and psychosocial consequences, including anxiety, depression, and alt
