Variable stoichiometry co-crystals are important in solid-state supramolecular chemistry as they allow studies of structure-property relationships while permitting the synthesis of new scaffolds using identical synthons. In this study, the lightweight, hydrophobic and porous cellulose-based aerogels (CAGs) were synthesized through a freeze-drying process using waste newspaper as the only raw material. After crosslinking with glutaraldehyde and treatment with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) using a simple thermal chemical vapor deposition process, the resulting CAGs became hydrophobic and oleophilic. We have used the new Raman-induced phase conjugate (RIPC) technique to obtain strong Raman signals using picosecond laser pulses. We have obtained the picosecond RIPC spectra of carbon disulfide, benzene, nitrobenzene, and calcite. By delaying one of the interacting pump beams relative to the other pump and probe beams we were able to determine the intensities of the phase conjugate beams at the Stokes frequencies as a function of time with 20-ps resolution. Using commercially available Pd/C as a catalyst, β-amino alcohols are synthesized from nitroarenes and 1,2-epoxides. Nitroarenes are transformed to amines through ring opening of epoxides and transfer hydrogenation of methanol over the Pd/C catalyst, producing β-amino alcohols. This approach generates aniline in situ from nitrobenzene, making it a viable alternative to traditional β-amino alcohol synthesis procedures. This technique has advantages, including easy recovery of catalysts through filtration and elimination of the requirement for intermediate separation.

Hydrogen bond dynamics at the neat interface between water and a series of organic liquids are studied with molecular dynamics computer simulation. The organic liquids are nonpolar (carbon tetrachloride), weakly polar (1,2-dichloroethane), and polar (nitrobenzene). The effect of surface polarity and surface roughness is examined. The odour emission characteristics of 22 recreational rivers in Nanjing were investigated and analysed. Ten patients with long-standing areate type alopecia totalis were sensitized with 1-chloro, 2, 4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB). Following sensitization they were painted once weekly on a 40 X 20 mm area of the vertex with DNCB in acetone, in concentrations adjusted to the allergic response. After 7 weeks, growth of hair was seen in the painted area in 3 patients and after 8 weeks all over the scalp in 3 other patients.

We calculate the free energy of solvation for two binary mixtures: hexane/nitrobenzene and carbon disulfide/acetone, examples of regular and azeotropic mixtures, respectively. Using the coupling parameter approach and thermodynamic integration, we obtain Henry's and Raoult's laws at the opposite ends of the composition range, with coefficients that compare reasonably with experiment.
