INTRODUCTION: Sulfur-fumigation of Paeoniae Radix Alba (PRA) could induce the chemical transformation of its bioactive component paeoniflorin into a sulfur-containing derivative paeoniflorin sulfite, and thus alter the quality, bioactivities, pharmacokinetics, and toxicities of PRA. However, how sulfur-fumigated PRA (S-PRA) affects the quality of PRA-containing complex preparations has not been intensively evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: We intend to evaluate the influence of S-PRA on the overall quality of three kinds of Si-Wu-Tang (SWT) formulations, i.e., decoction (SWT-D), granule (SWT-G), and mix…

Paeoniae radix alba extract (PRA extract) has the functions of regulating immunity, resisting inflammation, and has antioxidant properties. However, current recommendations of dietary PRA extract levels for raccoon dogs were inadequate. The purpose of this experimental study was to gain information allowing for better estimating the effects of PRA extract on raccoon dogs, and their PRA requirements. Fifty healthy male raccoon dogs of (120 ± 5) days old were randomly divided into 5 groups (group PRA0, PRA1, PRA2, PRA4, PRA8) with 10 animals in each group and 1 in each replicate. Five kinds of e…

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a major cause of chronic liver disease, with few effective treatments besides alcohol abstinence. Angelicae Gigantis Radix (AG), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (GR), Paeoniae Radix (PR), and Zizyphi Fructus (ZF) are traditional herbs used to treat various ailments, including liver diseases. While several studies have reported the beneficial effects of GR on ALD, the effects of AG, PR, and ZF remain underexplored. Therefore, their efficacy and mechanisms against ALD were investigated using an alcohol-related liver injury model. The model was induced by e…

A novel polysaccharide, designated PRRP2, was extracted from the dried root of Paeoniae Radix Rubra. Structural analysis suggested that the PRRP2 backbone was predominantly composed of →4)-Glcp-(1→ and →6)-Glcp-(1→ glycosidic linkages, with a trace amount of →2)-Xylp-(1→ embedded within the backbone. Supplementary PRRP2 effectively ameliorated rifampicin (RFP) + isoniazid (INH)-induced hepatic functional injury. PRRP2 also alleviated intestinal inflammation and enhanced intestinal barrier integrity in RFP + INH-induced liver injury mice. 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that PRRP2 administ…

Radix Paeoniae Alba, the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall., contains characteristic monoterpene glycosides, but efficient recovery of these polar constituents remains challenging. This study developed an ionic liquid-assisted sequential ultrasound-microwave extraction method and evaluated paeoniflorin, oxypaeoniflorin and albiflorin by HPLC as multi-marker responses. Among the ionic liquids tested, 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium dihydrogen phosphate showed the best extraction response. Box-Behnken response surface optimization gave practical extraction conditions of a solid-to-liquid ratio …
