INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic strained public health infrastructure in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), leading them to leverage resources of existing public health programmes including HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. This manuscript systematically documents how these programmes were used in response to understand both the barriers and facilitators encountered in the process.
METHODS: From March through August 2023, we conducted 72 structured interviews with staff in 13 countries who played central roles in the response. Countries were purposively selected from the po

BACKGROUND: The clinical development of therapeutics for COVID-19 proceeded at an extraordinary pace. Given the lack of studies evaluating this experience systematically, we analyzed the clinical development methods for COVID-19 therapeutics to determine strategies for shortening the clinical development period in preparation for future pandemics.
METHODS: We confirmed the US-FDA review documents for fourteen products that underwent Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic to examine the time required for clinical development and regulatory review and the submi

IMPORTANCE: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has evolved through multiple phases in the United States, with significant differences in patient centered outcomes with improvements in hospital strain, medical countermeasures, and overall understanding of the disease. We describe how patient characteristics changed and care progressed over the various pandemic phases; we also emphasize the need for an ongoing clinical network to improve the understanding of known and novel respiratory viral diseases.
OBJECTIVES: To describe how patient characteristics and

The delayed availability of vaccine during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic created a sense of urgency to better prepare for the next influenza pandemic. Advancements in manufacturing technology, speed and capacity have been achieved but vaccine effectiveness remains a significant challenge. Here, we describe a novel vaccine design strategy called immune engineering in the context of H7N9 influenza vaccine development. The approach combines immunoinformatic and structure modeling methods to promote protective antibody responses against H7N9 hemagglutinin (HA) by engineering whole antigens to c

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical importance of community engagement in managing disease outbreaks. In Ethiopia, efforts to control the pandemic were hampered by a limited understanding of the disease, especially in rural areas. While early studies provided some insights, there remains a significant gap in comprehensive data on community involvement throughout all phases of outbreak management. This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, practices, and community participation in pandemic preparedness and response, emphasizing that informed and engaged communities …

Chikungunya fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by an RNA virus of the Alphavirus genus and is characterized by fever and severe joint pain. The disease is primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. Since its re-emergence in 2005, chikungunya has spread extensively, affecting more than 2.8 billion people across 119 countries worldwide. This article reviews the global epidemiological features of chikungunya, with a focus on its transmission dynamics, the characteristics of the virus and its vectors, as well as the influence of ecological and climatic factors. The

Recent reports from the World Health Organization regarding Influenza A cases of zoonotic origin in humans (H1v and H9N2) and publications describing emergence swine Influenza A cases in humans together with "G4" Eurasian avian-like H1N1 Influenza A virus have drawn global attention to Influenza A pandemic threat. Additionally, the current COVID-19 epidemic has stressed the importance of surveillance and preparedness to prevent potential outbreaks. One feature of the QIAstat-Dx Respiratory SARS-CoV-2 panel is the double target approach for Influenza A detection of seasonal strains affecting hu

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on Latin America, exposing structural inequalities, fragmented healthcare systems, and longstanding technological dependence. The region experienced a high burden of infection and excess mortality, influenced by socioeconomic vulnerability and a high prevalence of metabolic comorbidities. In response, countries expanded diagnostic capacity, strengthened genomic surveillance, and increased participation in clinical research and therapeutic evaluation. Coordinated regional collaboration facilitated the detection and tracking of emerging SARS-CoV-2 vari

This study aimed to evaluate the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, identify preparedness gaps, and propose strategies to strengthen resilience for future health crises, drawing on the natural history of SARS-CoV-2 and epidemiological models. The research team conducted a narrative review with a descriptive analysis supported by case examples and modeling. We synthesized published literature, official reports, and surveillance data, analyzing COVID-19 transmission using the epidemiological triangle model. Comparative case studies from South Korea, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom wer

New and emerging infections with blood-borne pathogens pose an ongoing threat to the safety of blood transfusions and transplants. Bioarchives of stored blood donor samples represent a valuable pathogen screening resource for both ensuring safety of blood transfusions and for wider public health infectious disease surveillance. Large scale testing of donors enables early detection of pathogen spread and extent of population exposure. We have implemented two complementary systems for the bioarchiving of blood donor samples in England for these purposes. The CODONET bioarchive collects samples f

• Analyzed the outbreak situation and viral characteristics of the newly H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. • The current approval and research and development of the H5N1 HPAI vaccines were summarized. • Proposed vaccine development approaches against newly H5N1 virus, e.g. adjuvanted vaccine, mRNA vaccine, multivalent vaccine. • Discussed other prevention and control strategies, e.g. poultry vaccination, global surveillance and comprehensive testing.

Influenza is a viral respiratory disease capable of causing epidemics that represent a threat for global security. Mexico was the first country to notify the WHO of an outbreak of what later became the first influenza pandemic of the 21st Century, caused by the virus A(H1N1)2009. Before this event Mexico had a national pandemic influenza preparedness plan, which included seasonal influenza vaccination, stockpiles of personal protection equipment and strategic drugs, and risk communication strategies. During the epidemic, the national public health laboratory network and case surveillance syste
