The development of paranasal sinuses in patients with cystic fibrosis: sinuses volume analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a severe systemic disease that affects many aspects of patients' lives. It is known that the progression of the disease adversely affects lower and upper airways including the paranasal sinuses. However, its impact on sinus development in the pediatric population is not fully examined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the development of the paranasal sinuses in a pediatric population with CF and compare it to a control group consisting of healthy children. METHODS: The results of computed tomography (CT) scans of children with the disease and the c…

Selective irrigation of paranasal sinuses in the treatment of recalcitrant chronic sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) refractory to medical and surgical therapy is a challenging entity to treat. Topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs have been increasingly used in managing this disorder. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the role of maxillary sinus antrostomy tubes (MAST) in selectively irrigating paranasal sinuses with topical antibiotics with anti-inflammatory in treating recalcitrant CRS. A prospective clinical trial was performed at a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Thirteen patients with failed maximal medical and surgical therapies for chron…

Microbial flora of nose and paranasal sinuses in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Nasal secretions, maxillary sinus aspirates and specimens of the maxillary sinus mucosa were collected in 44 patients aged between 25 and 60 affected by mono- or bilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis, in order to establish the best sampling technique for microbiological purposes, the most frequently involved bacteria and the physiopathological mechanism underlying chronic maxillary disease. The sinusal mucosa resulted to be the most reliable sample as it reduces contamination and microbial variability. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in nasal swab (15.6%), in maxillary sinus aspirates (30.4%)

Benign cysts and tumors of the paranasal sinuses.

To thoroughly understand the biology of any lesion and render the appropriate management, clear and accurate definitions are paramount. For benign cysts and tumors of the oral maxillofacial region, an accurate depiction of these lesions needs to be elucidated to provide both the treating surgeon and the patient with a clear understanding of the course of treatment and the outcome.

[Plasmocytoma in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses].

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell myeloma is a monoclonal neoplastic growth of plasmocytes--classified to a large group of B cell lymphomas. In the majority of cases plasma cell myeloma manifest as a generalized neoplastic disease localized in the bones. Only ca 10% of cases represent a isolated growth within the lymph nodes, skin or mucosa. The most common localization of extramedullary plasmocytoma is a mucosa of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The rest of myelomas within the nose and sinuses are in fact only one of mulitiple focuses, within a bone frame of the nose and sinuses. MATERIAL: C…

Inverting papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

Inverting papilloma is a very uncommon neoplasm; however, its ability to destroy bone, recur after incomplete removal, and undergo malignant transformation makes it an important disease to recognize. Because early diagnosis and prompt treatment offer high rates of cure, it is important to be able to differentiate inverting papilloma from more benign nasal growths such as allergic nasal polyps. This article will summarize the etiology, location, signs, symptoms, potential for malignancy, and current treatment strategies for inverting papilloma.

The skull base, paranasal sinuses, and related malignancies.

Tumors of the anterior skull base most commonly originate from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Such early presenting signs and symptoms as nasal obstruction, epiphora, and epistaxis are frequently thought to have a benign pathology. Proptosis, vision changes, skin fixation, and cervical adenopathy are associated with advanced disease. Treatment of paranasal sinus tumors is complex, involving combined therapy and multidisciplinary teams. The particular method of treatment is determined by multiple factors, including tumor histopathology, age, health of the patient, and extent of disease…

Pneumoceles of the paranasal sinuses (a case report).

We report a case of an infection of a large sphenoidal sinus communicating with a hyperaerated mastoid. Endoscopic drainage of this large cavity was successful. We suggest that EES should have a place in the treatment of the sinusal pneumocele. Surgery should however be reserved for cosmetic purposes, infection, algetic symptoms and ocular problems. A cosmetic correction with osteotomy and bone resection can be associated with the endoscopic surgery.

[Navigation surgery in diseases of the paranasal sinuses].

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-80s, endonasal sinus surgery has gained significant importance in the treatment of chronic inflammatory sinus disease. Many surgeons have recognized the necessity of developing new methods to increase the safety of this type of surgery. One of the advancements in increasing the safety of endonasal sinus surgery was the development of computer-aided surgical navigation (CAS) systems. METHODS: Since 1996, we have tried several different CAS systems for difficult surgical procedures in sinus and anterior skull base surgery, mainly revision surgery for chronic inflammato

Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of which 50% with situs inversus Kartagener's syndrome. Secondary ciliary dyskinesia is a frequent observation, mostly in association with or after respiratory tract infections. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis are mostly based on the typical clinical picture, the absence of mucociliary clearance and ciliary activity and the electron microscopical demonstration of ultrastructural abnormalities. However, these investigations are not always conclusive. Functional and ultrastructural ciliary evaluation after ciliogenesis in tis

Endoscopic examination of normal paranasal sinuses in horses.

The frontal, caudal maxillary, and rostral maxillary sinuses of 10 equine cadavers were examined endoscopically, and the findings were confirmed by sinusotomy. Similar endoscopic examinations were performed in five conscious, adult horses by using sedation and local anesthesia. Useful portals of entry for the arthroscope in adult horses were: for the frontal sinus, 60% of the distance in a lateral direction from midline to the medial canthus and 0.5 cm caudal to the medial canthus; for the caudal maxillary sinus, 2 cm rostral and 2 cm ventral to the medial canthus; and for the rostral maxillar

[Traumatically-induced foreign bodies of the paranasal sinuses].

Foreign bodies of the nose and its related sinuses are a common feature in otorhinolaryngology. Particularly in small children, one will find unilateral rhinorrhea as an initial symptom. In the adult, foreign bodies of the nose or paranasal sinuses are mainly caused by traumatic events. In the present paper the authors report two cases of foreign bodies of the paranasal sinuses. In one case the patient had been suffering from unilateral cephalgia for more than 40 years. The other patient had a short history prior to the extraction of the foreign body from the sphenoid sinuses. Diagnostic and t…

Diagnostic imaging of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

There are four principal modalities now used by the Radiologist to investigate the nose and paranasal sinuses. These are: plain X-ray, conventional tomography, computerised tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR). Plain X-ray is the initial examination, and is used as a screening procedure before employing one of the tomographic techniques. Conventional pluridirectional tomography has now been superseded by CT scanning, which has the advantage of providing both good bone detail and soft tissue imaging. Since the introduction of magnetic resonance (MR), this technique has replaced CT as th…
