Injuries, Medical Conditions, and Changes in Blood Levels in German Special Operations Forces Selection.

BACKGROUND: Medical conditions often develop during military training. The aim of this study was to compile medical conditions and injuries sustained during a 5-day military exercise, compare them with incidences at similar civilian events, and subsequently identify differences between those who finished the exercise (Finishers) and those who did not (Nonfinishers) to identify preventable causes for not finishing and to reduce unnecessary health risks. METHODS: Fifty-one soldiers had their blood parameters (creatine kinase [CK], aspartate transaminase [AST], alanine transaminase [ALT], gamma-

Unfit for service: the implications of rising obesity for US military recruitment.

This paper contributes to the literature on the labor market consequences of unhealthy behaviors and poor health by examining a previously underappreciated consequence of the rise in obesity in the USA: challenges for military recruitment. Specifically, this paper estimates the percentage of the US military-age population that exceeds the US Army's current active duty enlistment standards for weight-for-height and percent body fat, using data from the series of National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys that spans 1959-2008. We calculate that the percentage of military-age adults inelig

Pneumonia at Marine Corps Recruit Depots: Current Trends in Ambulatory Encounters and Inpatient Discharges.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections are recognized as a significant source of morbidity for military populations, particularly for recruits. This analysis aims to describe the pneumonia burden at Marine Corps Recruit Depots (MCRD) in Parris Island and San Diego during 2007-2014, as these two depots maintain noteworthy comparisons in vaccine and prophylaxis policies. First, both depots reinstated the adenovirus vaccine in October 2011. Second, San Diego provides the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine to all recruits within the first 2 days of arrival, although Parris Island does not routi

Emotional Burden and Selfcare Strategies Among Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response Personnel in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, Wisconsin, USA: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid prevention personnel who interface with overdose events are at a risk of emotional challenges, though little research has explored their emotional experiences and self-care strategies. We explored the emotional experiences and self-care strategies to manage mental and emotional challenges among individuals who work in overdose prevention and response. METHODS: This was a qualitative study. Using a phenomenological approach, we conducted in-depth key informant interviews (KIIs) with forty-six purposively selected opioid overdose prevention and response personnel from Augus

A typology for health care teams.

BACKGROUND: Effective interdisciplinary health care teamwork improves clinical and financial outcomes, and training and assessment of team competencies are central to establishing high-functioning health care teams. The roles that team members assume in the provision of patient care are important contributors to effective health care team performance; however, variability among health care practitioners can lead to philosophical, political, social, and clinical differences in perceptions and recommendations for patient care as well as expected communication patterns and protocols. Generic task-related occupational requirements for Royal Naval personnel.

Physical tests and selection criteria have historically been used by many military organizations. However, the standards associated with them have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. This paper describes a series of experiments that were conducted to establish task-related occupational tests and standards (TBTs) for Royal Naval (RN) personnel. A total of 172 (106 male and 66 female) RN personnel volunteered for these experiments, which were designed to: identify the anthropometric requirements for operating various safety hatches and doors on board a RN Frigate (TBT1); quantify the

Should routine throat cultures be done in hospital personnel complaining of a sore throat?

In a 750-bed community-teaching hospital with 3,200 employees, throat cultures were routinely done in hospital personnel complaining of a sore throat. During a 3-month period, 323 employees had throat cultures; only 20 (6.2%) of these throat cultures grew group A streptococcus. The prevalence of positive throat cultures was similarly low in employees (6.2%) and adult patients (7.3%). There was no evidence that employees either had higher prevalence of group A streptococcal pharyngitis or that they spread the infection to patients. It is concluded that routine throat cultures are not warranted

Why they come, why they stay and why they leave: a survey to understand the drivers of recruitment, retention, and attrition of allied health clinicians in an Australian metropolitan health network.

BACKGROUND: While allied health plays a central role in healthcare, workforce challenges are straining the sector. Challenges are shaped by population changes, emerging models of care, and educational limitations, and were exacerbated by COVID-19. This study aimed to identify drivers of recruitment and retention for allied health clinicians in an Australian metropolitan setting. Identifying and addressing these factors is essential to the design and implementation of tailored, evidence-informed workforce strategy and policy. METHODS: This cross-sectional, online survey explored workplace attr

Who should be treated for Helicobacter pylori infection? A review of consensus conferences and guidelines.

The publication of the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference guidelines on management of Helicobacter pylori infection in 1994 set a precedence. At present, at least eight European countries have produced national guidelines, and, more recently, the European Helicobacter pylori Study Group also outlined guidelines based on the strength of available evidence. It is generally agreed that H. pylori should be eradicated in peptic ulcer disease. In nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related ulcers, most countries that considered the issue suggested discontinuing NS

A survey of pre-placement urinalysis drug findings.

In December, 1989, the Department of Transportation (DOT) in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandated an extensive urine drug testing program for selected positions within the airline industry. At the end of 1 year we have tested 7,872 applicants under these rules, with a positive finding rate of 0.17%. We have also tested 32,157 applicants, including those applying for DOT-covered positions, with a positive rate of 2.82%. Considering only the two major drugs of abuse--marijuana and cocaine--we found the positive rate to be an order of magnitude greater than the rate

Cutaneous Manifestations of Neglected Infectious Diseases in US Military Personnel.

Infectious diseases continue to pose a substantial threat to the health and operations of military personnel around the world. Deployment to endemic regions, environmental exposures, and trauma increase susceptibility to both common and rare pathogens. Many of these infectious agents manifest with dermatologic findings that may serve as early clinical indicators, particularly in austere environments where diagnostic resources are limited. This review describes select rare infectious agents encountered by United States military personnel that manifest with cutaneous findings. Epidemiologic risk
