Preparation and Post-Processing of Three-Dimensional Printed Porous Titanium Alloys.

Ti6Al4V is widely utilized in orthopedic implants due to its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. However, traditional solid titanium implants exhibit an elastic modulus (90-115 GPa) significantly higher than that of human bone (10-30 GPa), leading to stress shielding and implant loosening. To address this, porous titanium alloys have been developed to better match bone elasticity. Additive manufacturing, particularly selective laser melting (SLM), enables precise control over pore size and porosity, thereby tuning mechanical properties. Nevertheless, SL

Three-Dimensional-Printed Modular Titanium Alloy Plates for Osteosynthesis of the Jawbone.

BACKGROUNDS: The titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is frequently used in implantology due to its biocompatibility. The use of 3D printing enables the mechanical modification of implant structures and the adaptation of their shape to the specific needs of individual patients. METHODS: The titanium alloy plates were designed using the 3D CAD method and printed using a 3D SLM printer. Qualitative tests were performed on the material surface using a microcomputed tomography scanner. The cytotoxicity of the modular titanium plates was investigated using the MTT assay on the L929 cell li

Tunable Lotus Leaf Effect by Three-Dimensionally Printed Stretchable Objects.

Adjustable wettability is important for various fields, such as droplet manipulation and controlled surface adhesion. Herein, we present high-resolution 3D stretchable structures with tunable superhydrophobicity, fabricated by a stereolithography-based printing process. The printing compositions comprise nonfluorinated monomers based on silicone urethane with dispersed hydrophobic silica particles. 3D lotus-like structures were designed and printed, having microsize pillars located at the external surfaces, with controlled dimensions and interspacing. The design of the pillars and the presence

Three-Dimensional Printed Model of the Mediastinum for Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident Education.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinoscopy remains an important component of lung cancer staging. The development of endobronchial ultrasonography has meant residents perform fewer mediastinoscopies. We hypothesized that a 3-dimensional printed model of the mediastinum would be an effective tool for teaching residents the anatomy and techniques for mediastinoscopy. METHODS: A color model of the mediastinum was 3-dimensionally printed based on segmented computed tomographic images. For 2 years, residents and attendings were asked to provide a skills assessment after every mediastinoscopy. During the second y

A three-dimensional (3D) printed paediatric trachea for airway management training.

There is a deficit of commercially available paediatric airway models for anaesthesia airway management training, particularly for infant front-of-neck access and customised airway planning. Acknowledging this, we created a three-dimensional printed prototype for an affordable, high-fidelity training device, incorporating realistic tactile feedback, reproducibility and potential for modification for specific patient pathologies. Our model, created on a Stratasys Polyjet J750™ (Rehovot, Israel) printer, is a novel and useful educational tool in paediatric airway management, and we are pleased t

Three-Dimensionally Printed Microelectromechanical-System Hydrogel Valve for Communicating Hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus (HCP) is a chronic neurological brain disorder caused by a malfunction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage mechanism in the brain. The current standard method to treat HCP is a shunt system. Unfortunately, the shunt system suffers from complications including mechanical malfunctions, obstructions, infections, blockage, breakage, overdrainage, and/or underdrainage. Some of these complications may be attributed to the shunts' physically large and lengthy course making them susceptible to external forces, siphoning effects, and risks of infection. Additionally, intracranial ca

Three-Dimensional Printed Model for Surgical Simulation of Combined Transpetrosal Approach.

BACKGROUND: The combined transpetrosal approach is a complicated skull base surgery with a high degree of difficulty. Herein, we made a 3-dimensional (3D) printed petrous bone with color-coded anatomic sites and evaluated its usefulness as a model to practice drilling associated with combined transpetrosal surgery. METHODS: To design a 3D model of the petrous bone, we chose a representative epidermoid petroclival tumor case who underwent combined transpetrosal surgery at our hospital. A 3D image of the petrous bone embedded with color-coded anatomic sites, including cranial nerves, brainstem,

Construction of three-dimensional printed anatomic models for frontal sinus education.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the frontal sinus can pose a challenge for many neuroradiolgists and otolaryngologists, especially trainees. While much of resident education occurs in didactics, self-study or in the operating room, studies suggest that some trainees prefer hands-on learning. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology provides users the opportunity to make customizable low-cost objects that provide tactile learning-a learning modality that may be preferable in education. METHODS: Three-dimensional printed models of frontal sinus anatomy based on selected patient computed tomography

Design and Development of a Topology-Optimized Three-Dimensional Printed Soft Gripper.

In the past decade, a rich repertoire of soft robots, designed from biomimetic and intuitive approaches, has been developed to overcome challenges faced by their rigid-bodied counterparts. However, these design approaches are greatly limited by the designers' experience and inspiration. In this article, the structural design problem is mathematically modeled under the framework of topology optimization, and solved by a new implementation tool that combines Abaqus/CAE and Matlab coding. Herein, a pneumatic soft gripper with two identical fingers was developed as a practical application. To fulf

Fabrication of three-dimensional scan-to-print ear model for microtia reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Microtia is a congenital deformity of the external ear that occurs in 1 of every 5000 births. Microtia reconstruction using traditional two-dimensional templates does not provide highly detailed ear shapes. Here, we describe the feasibility of using a three-dimensional (3D) ear model as a reference. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven children aged from 11 to 16 (6 grade III and 1 grade II microtia) were recruited from Seoul National University Children's Hospital, Korea. We generated 3D-computer-aided design models of each patient's ear by performing 3D laser scanning for a mirror-trans

A three dimensional printed endobronchial stent for the treatment of a broncho-esophageal fistula.

Broncho-esophageal fistulas (BEFs) are a rare but serious complication that can occur after esophagectomy, often resulting in aspiration, respiratory issues, and infection. Management depends on fistula size and location, with options including conservative treatments, surgical closure and stenting. Conventional treatment involves esophageal stents, which may be insufficient for larger or more complex fistulas. This case report describes the first use of a 3D-printed airway stent in combination with an esophageal stent to treat a broncho-esophageal fistula. A 70-year-old patient with distal es

Three-Dimensionally Printed Scaffolds and Drug Delivery Systems in Treatment of Osteoporosis.

The increasing incidence of osteoporotic fractures determines ongoing research on new methods and strategies for improving the difficult healing process of this type of fracture. Osteoporotic patients suffer from the intense side effects of accustomed drug treatment and its systemic distribution in the body. To overcome these drawbacks, besides searching for new drugs, 3D-printed scaffolds and drug delivery systems have started to be increasingly seen as the main strategy employed against osteoporosis. Three-dimensionally printed scaffolds can be tailored in intricate designs and make use of n
