Technology for Improving Street Dog Welfare and Capturing Data in Digital Format during Street Dog Sterilisation Programmes.

Street dogs survive on food handouts provided by individuals, or the wider community yet typically receive limited to no veterinary care. They can also carry a variety of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, posing a significant risk to human and dog population health. Dog sterilisation is one of the most humane and effective methods available to control street dog populations. Dog sterilisation programmes, particularly those operating at a large-scale, often face a variety of challenges including limited resources, staffing, and less-than-ideal facilities. Recordkeeping is often a challenge as w

Diclofenac residues as the cause of vulture population decline in Pakistan.

The Oriental white-backed vulture (OWBV; Gyps bengalensis) was once one of the most common raptors in the Indian subcontinent. A population decline of >95%, starting in the 1990s, was first noted at Keoladeo National Park, India. Since then, catastrophic declines, also involving Gyps indicus and Gyps tenuirostris, have continued to be reported across the subcontinent. Consequently these vultures are now listed as critically endangered by BirdLife International. In 2000, the Peregrine Fund initiated its Asian Vulture Crisis Project with the Ornithological Society of Pakistan, establishing study

Problems of microbial zoonoses in Hungary. (A review).

Hungarian data of 36 zoonotic diseases are summarized. These illnesses cause problems not only for health, public health and veterinary health services but for the society and their importance has increased. Changing character of an old pathogen (Salmonella enteritidis PT4) resulted in new epidemiological situation. The number of cases of food-borne zoonotic diseases has rapidly grown. The number of pets has elevated and in consequence the possibility of an infection of owners, breaders, sellers and other persons has also grown. Growing number of HIV positive patients as well as ill persons tr

Expanding the Antimicrobial Toolbox with Therapeutic Viruses: Mechanisms, Pharmaceutical Formulation, and Translational Outlook.

Infectious diseases continue to represent one of the most persistent challenges in human health and agricultural productivity. These diseases are caused by a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is the gradual evolution of pathogenic microbes to evade the action of commonly used antimicrobial agents (antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and antiparasitics) and is a problem that continues to be exacerbated by the inappropriate use of antimicrobials across multiple global industries. AMR poses a major threa

The protection effect of rhodionin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-induced pneumonia through sortase A inhibition.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a zoonotic antibiotic-resistant pathogen that negatively impacts society from medical, veterinary, and societal standpoints. The search for alternative therapeutic strategies and innovative anti-infective agents is urgently needed. Among the pathogenic mechanisms of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), sortase A is a virulence factor of great concern because it is highly linked with the ability of MRSA to invade the host. In this study, we identified that rhodionin, a natural compound of flavonoid glucosides, effectively inhibited the activit

Prostatic Neoplasia in the Intact and Castrated Dog: How Dangerous is Castration?

Elective gonadectomy in the dog is a topic of interest for clinicians, pet-owners, and society. Although canine prostatic neoplasia (CPN) has a low incidence (0.35%), reports of an increased risk for castrated dogs attract attention and cause concern in pet-owners. Our aim is to provide professionals and non-professionals with a detailed description of this possible side effect of gonadectomy in the dog. The mean age at diagnosis of CPN ranges from 8.5 to 11.2 years. Medium to large size breeds are more frequently affected. Symptoms and findings of non-invasive examinations are not pathognomon

Cave canem: bite mark analysis in a fatal dog pack attack.

Deaths resulting from animal attacks are rare, and according to The Humane Society of the United States, more than 300 individuals died of dog attacks in the United States from 1979 to 1996. The case of a fatal dog-pack attack on an 83-year-old woman is presented. Wide lacerations of the scalp, several tooth puncture wounds, and bruises reproducing bite marks were recorded on the whole body. Exsanguinations due to brachial artery laceration subsequent to multiple dog bites were indicated as the main cause of death. An integrated study in association with a veterinary doctor was performed on 27

Forensic investigations of religious rituals involving poultry: a case report.

Animal victims of human cruelty are receiving increasing attention from the press and society. Veterinary pathologists and civic authorities have a duty not only to elucidate the cause, method and manner of death but also to address the motivation behind a case. Poultry are commonly used as offering to gods in Santería rituals (ebós). Only a few cases have been reported in scientific journals, in contrast with the number of cases described in the media. Here, a hen and a cockerel (Gallus domesticus) were submitted to the VISAVET Health Surveillance Centre for autopsy, which comprised macroscop

Substitution of vaccinia virus Elstree by modified vaccinia virus Ankara to test the virucidal efficacy of chemical disinfectants.

After the eradication of variola in 1980, the smallpox vaccination was considered to be no longer required and was subsequently abandoned mainly because of possible adverse effects of vaccinia virus especially in first-time vaccinees. Despite a growing number of humans without immunity against vaccinia virus, vaccinia virus Lister Elstree (VACV) is still prescribed for testing virucidal efficacy of chemical disinfectants in the guidelines of the German Veterinary Medical Society [Deutsche Veterinärmedizinische Gesellschaft (DVG)], the German Association for the Control of Virus Diseases [Deuts

The black soldier fly bioreactor: host-microbiome synergy in pathogen neutralization, xenobiotic remediation, and downstream feed safety.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are critical to the circular economy, transforming hazardous organic wastes into sustainable agricultural feed. However, processing high-bioburden substrates presents severe biosafety challenges. This review synthesizes recent advancements (2021-2026) regarding the multidimensional role of the BSFL gut bioreactor in waste sanitization and xenobiotic remediation. Pathogen neutralization is driven by a synergistic, tripartite defense system: host-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), biophysical lipid interactions (e.g., lauric acid), and microbiome-mediated comp

Investigating RND efflux pumps in Sphingobium yanoikuyae P4: the role of nonpathogenic bacteria in antibiotic resistance gene spread amid environmental contamination.

The widespread and inappropriate application of antibiotics across human and veterinary medicine has generated pressing global health threats, principally the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the contamination of the environment with antibiotics. A fundamental mechanism fueling environmental AMR is the proliferation and horizontal dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with efflux transporter proteins functioning as central intermediaries. Surprisingly, nonpathogenic bacteria, which are usually regarded as harmless, now pose a substantial risk to society due to the

Antimicrobial Resistance in Companion Animals: A 30-Month Analysis on Clinical Isolates from Urinary Tract Infections in a Veterinary Hospital.

Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in small animal practice and their inappropriate treatment contributes to the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) spreading. This study assessed bacterial prevalence, non-susceptibility percentages, antimicrobial prescription and the impact of the application of international guidelines redacted by the International Society for Companion Animals Infectious Disease (ISCAID) in dogs and cats with UTIs evaluated at a European veterinary university hospital, over a 30-month period. A total of 729 bacterial isolates were included. The most frequently

Ru-terpyridine complexes containing clotrimazole as potent photoactivatable selective antifungal agents.

The overuse of antimicrobial agents in medical and veterinary applications has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance in some microorganisms and this is now one of the major concerns in modern society. In this context, the use of transition metal complexes with photoactivatable properties, which can act as drug delivery systems triggered by light, could become a potent strategy to overcome the problem of resistance. In this work several Ru complexes with terpyridine ligands and the clotrimazole fragment, which is a potent antimycotic drug, were synthesized. The main goal was to exp

Development of a reference interval for urinary ammonia-to-creatinine ratio in feline patients.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of acid-base homeostasis can lead to many clinical problems. Ammonia excretion by the kidneys is critical to maintaining acid-base homeostasis through bicarbonate production. Measurement of ammonia excretion may help determine if the kidneys are properly functioning in maintaining acid-base balance. Reference intervals are essential tools for clinical decision-making but do not currently exist for urinary ammonia-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in feline patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate a reference interval (RI) for UACR in healthy adult cats. METHODS: The

Institut Pasteur and Bacillus anthracis have enjoyed a relationship lasting almost 120 years, starting from its foundation and the pioneering work of Louis Pasteur in the nascent fields of microbiology and vaccination, and blooming after 1986 following the molecular biology/genetic revolution. This contribution will give a historical overview of these two research eras, taking advantage of the archives conserved at Institut Pasteur. The first era mainly focused on the production, characterisation, surveillance and improvement of veterinary anthrax vaccines; the concepts and technologies with w
