Ultrasound reports of 102 children with microbiologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) showed that 23 of 37 (64%) and 23 of 65 (36%) had TB suggestive abdominal lymphadenopathy, and 16 of 37 (44%) and 8 of 65 (13%) had splenic microabscesses, respectively. Splenic microabscesses were associated with HIV infection (P = 0.041). These data suggest that pulmonary TB is often complicated by abdominal TB in children.

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) rarely presents with cutaneous manifestations, which can pose significant diagnostic and management challenges for healthcare providers. In this hospital-based study of 123 confirmed PTB patients, 18 (14.6%) showed cutaneous involvement, predominantly lupus vulgaris (33.3%) and scrofuloderma (27.8%). Cutaneous manifestations were significantly associated with previous TB treatment, extrapulmonary involvement and severe radiological disease. Lupus vulgaris and scrofuloderma were most frequently linked with active pulmonary tuberculosis. This study advances knowledge

We report the case of a 54-year-old man presenting with concomitant pulmonary and tonsillar tuberculosis. The coexistence of these two localizations poses a diagnostic challenge because of the nonspecific clinical manifestations and the potential confusion with malignant diseases. The diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was confirmed by positive sputum GeneXpert MTB/RIF, while histopathological examination of the tonsillar lesion revealed non-caseating granulomatous inflammation, with no evidence of malignancy. The patient received the standard anti-tuberculosis therapy for six months, with co

INTRODUCTION: Sputum-based tuberculosis diagnosis does not address the needs of certain categories of patients. Active development of a noninvasive urine-based diagnosis could provide an alternative approach. We reviewed publications covering more than 30 urine biomarkers proposed as significant for TB diagnosis. Analytical approaches were heterogeneous in design and methods; few studies on diagnostic outcome prediction described a formal specificity and sensitivity analysis.
AREAS COVERED: This review describes studies of non-sputum diagnostic approaches of pulmonary TB based on urine using

Glomerulonephritis in tuberculosis may be a direct manifestation of renal infection or a result of immune-complex deposition complicating extra-renal infection, such as in pulmonary tuberculosis. A 17-year-old adolescent boy from Somalia was found to have pulmonary tuberculosis during routine health screening performed on entering Malta, with computed tomography of the chest showing scarring and calcification of the left upper lobe, left lower lobe consolidation, and a small left-sided pleural effusion. Five days after starting anti-tuberculous therapy, he developed lower limb and sacral oedem

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the maternal and perinatal outcome in pulmonary tuberculosis cases as compared to low risk pregnancies in a tertiary referral hospital.
METHODS: A total of 15 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis over a period of two years who delivered in our unit was studied in the retrospective study. The maternal and perinatal outcome in them was compared with 191 low risk pregnancies who delivered at the same time in the hospital after taking into account inclusion and exclusion criteria.
RESULTS: The mean age and mean parity was 25.73 ± 2.85 and 28.75 ± 3.11, 2.1 and 1.9 in the 2 gro

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary tuberculosis manifesting as a mass lesion, thus, mimicking a lung carcinoma is an unusual radiographic presentation of tuberculosis (TB). The common radiologic patterns and clinical presentations are well known and documented. We report two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis with a neoplastic appearance on chest imaging diagnosed histologically. A 21 - year old female with cough, weight loss, anorexia and an unremarkable physical examination. Chest radiography showed a right apical mass suggestive of lung cancer. Histology of the lesion revealed parenchymal pulmonary tubercu

Tuberculosis of the oral cavity is rare. It is associated with clinical polymorphism and poses above all a diagnostic problem. We report the case of a 42-year-old male patient with tubercular cheilitis. This study aims to focus attention on tuberculosis that can be detected exceptionally in specific locations, such as the oral lip.

Tuberculosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Indeed, a third of the world population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and more than 8 million new cases of tuberculosis each year. Pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common location. Its diagnosis is difficult and often established with a delay causing a spread of infection. The diagnosis of tuberculosis infection is mainly based on immunological tests represented by the tuberculin skin test and detection of gamma interferon, while the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis is suspected on epidemiological context, lasting gene

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a widespread disease, and in spite of timely diagnosis and treatment it can permanently compromise lung function.
OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of pulmonary impairment in cured adult pulmonary TB (PTB) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult cured PTB patients were included in the study; those with any other condition or disease affecting lung function were excluded. After detailed history taking and examination, all patients underwent chest X-ray (CXR) and spirometry; 76 patients were investigated for pulmonary hypertension using electrocardiogram and tw

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the level and prognostic value of procalcitonin (PCT) in a West African out-patient cohort with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).
METHOD: Patients were clinically scored (TB score), grouped into severity classes (SCs) upon diagnosis and followed for 12 months. Patients were categorised by comparisons of severity class (SC I+II or SC III) and levels of PCT and C-reactive protein (CRP) at diagnosis. Fifty healthy volunteers from the study area were used as controls. The association with TB score was explored using Spearman's rank correlation test. Survival curves stratified a

BACKGROUND: Rifamycins are an essential component of modern short-course regimens for treating tuberculosis. Rifabutin has favourable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties and is less prone to drug-drug interactions than rifampicin. It could contribute to shortening of therapy or simplify treatment in HIV-positive people who also need antiretroviral drugs.
OBJECTIVES: To compare combination drug regimens containing rifabutin with those containing rifampicin for treating pulmonary tuberculosis
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register (Janua

A mother, newly found to be positive for HIV, delivered her first baby at 25 weeks gestation. The infant initially did well in spite of a symptomatic patent duct and a severe intraventricular haemorrhage, but became severely unwell needing further respiratory support on day 18. Acid fast bacilli were found in endotracheal secretions. After the baby's death, the bacilli were confirmed to be Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the same organism was grown from the mother's urine. The case raised challenging issues in relatively uncharted territory in terms of treatment of the infant, public health is

Alcohol consumption has been described as a risk factor for infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but its contribution to tuberculosis has been difficult to isolate from other adverse socioeconomic factors. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of alcohol consumption on pulmonary infection with M. tuberculosis in a murine model. BALB/c mice were maintained on the Lieber-DeCarli liquid ethanol diet or a liquid control diet and infected intratracheally with low-dose M. tuberculosis H37Rv. Lung organism burdens, lung and lung-associated lymph node CD4(+)- and CD8(+)- lymphocyte numbers an
