Development and experiments of a continuum robotic system for transoral laryngeal surgery.

PURPOSE: Currently, self-retaining laryngoscopic surgery is not suitable for some patients, and there are dead zones relating to surgical field exposure and operation. The quality of the surgery can also be affected by the long periods of time required to complete it. Teleoperated continuum robots with flexible joints are expected to solve these issues. However, at the current stage of developing transoral robotic surgery systems, their large size affects the precision of surgical operative actions and there are high development and treatment costs. METHODS: We fabricated a flexible joint bas

Dual Sound Sources in Siamangs Generate Individually Rhythmic and Temporally Coordinated Vocal Emissions.

Temporal organization is crucial for efficient communication in many animal species, particularly those with complex vocal output. Singing primates structure their songs into rhythmic categories based on small-integer ratios between adjacent intervals. However, rhythmic organization usually emerges from a single sound source, and it remains unknown whether any species can produce rhythms through the coordination of multiple vocal production mechanisms. This study investigates rhythmicity in the song of siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus). This singing primate uses two distinct vocal mechanisms

Convergent vocal representations in parrot and human forebrain motor networks.

Cortical networks for the production of spoken language in humans are organized by phonetic features1,2, such as articulatory parameters3,4 and vocal pitch5,6. Previous research has failed to find an equivalent forebrain representation in other species7-11. To investigate whether this functional organization is unique to humans, here we performed population recordings in the vocal production circuitry of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), a small parrot that can generate flexible vocal output12-15, including mimicked speech sounds16. Using high-density silicon probes17, we measured the

Preparation of the Rat Vocal Fold for Neuromuscular Analyses.

The purpose of this tutorial is to describe the preparation of the rat vocal fold for histochemical neuromuscular study. This protocol outlines procedures for rat laryngeal dissection, flash-freezing, and cryosectioning of the vocal folds. This study describes how to cryosection vocal folds in both longitudinal and cross-sectional planes. A novelty of this protocol is the laryngeal tracking during cryosectioning that ensures accurate identification of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles and reduces the chance of tissue loss. Figures demonstrate the progressive cryosectioning in both planes. Twenty

Role of circulating MSCs in vocal fold wound healing.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vocal fold injury can cause intractable scarring resulting in dysphonia. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have great therapeutic potential in wound healing. They continuously circulate in the peripheral blood and migrate into wound sites where they induce regenerative effects. However, their roles in vocal fold wound healing are poorly understood because few MSCs exist in the peripheral blood and there is no specific marker to identify them. The present study evaluates how intravenously injected MSCs affect vocal fold wound healing using Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) -lab

Histopathologic study of alternative substances for vocal fold medialization.

This research investigated the histopathologic and migratory properties of injectable alternatives for vocal fold medialization. Thirteen dogs underwent sectioning of the recurrent laryngeal nerve followed by vocal fold injection with 1 of 4 substances: Teflon, autologous fat, silicone suspension, or hydroxyapatite cement. Six months later, the animals were painlessly sacrificed and histopathologic analysis of the larynx and regional lymph nodes was performed. Although regional lymph node migration was noted, Teflon injection resulted in minimal vocal fold inflammatory reaction. Vocal folds in

Common input of the cranial motor nuclei involved in phonation in squirrel monkey.

Our aim was to locate brain regions projecting to all cranial motor nuclei involved in phonation simultaneously, that is, the ambiguus, trigeminal motor, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei. For this purpose, four squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were injected with horseradish peroxidase, each of the four nuclei in a different animal. Those regions retrogradely labeled in all four cases then were injected in another 29 animals with [3H]leucine for anterograde tracing. We found that the only region connected directly with all phonatory motor nuclei is a restricted portion of the pontine and medul

Development of a laboratory model to assess fear and anxiety in cats.

Objectives The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop a laboratory-based model to assess fear and anxiety in cats using the feline open-field test (OFT) and the feline human interaction test (HIT); and (2) to validate the model using diazepam, a known anxiolytic. Methods Laboratory-housed cats (n = 41) were first classified as fearful, mildly fearful or non-fearful by a technician familiar with the cats and also by veterinary behaviorists (GL, JL), by assessing the cats' behavior in their home rooms. In experiment 1, each cat's behavior was assessed in an OFT and an HIT. In experiment 2

Properties of a Novel Animal Model of LPR.

BACKGROUND: Few satisfactory animal models of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is available. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) may be associated with the pathogenesis of LPR injuries and laryngeal carcinomas. OBJECTIVES: To establish an animal model of LPR and to explore the related pathological changes and cytokine expression in the vocal cord tissue. METHODS: Twenty rabbits were divided into experimental and control groups. Dilatation of the upper and lower esophageal sphincter were carried out in the experimental group. The pH of the pharynx, pathological, a

Posterior glottic stenosis: a canine model.

Posterior glottic stenosis is a disabling disease in which the vocal folds are fixed near the midline. This allows adequate vocal fold adduction for voicing, but does not permit useful abduction for ventilation. The most common cause is prolonged endotracheal intubation for mechanical ventilation, and the incidence is estimated at 4% for intubations between 5 and 10 days. Currently, our understanding and treatment modalities are based on retrospective reviews of small, nonrandomized clinical experiences. The purpose of this project was to develop an animal model that would improve our understa

Congenital vocal cord paralysis with possible autosomal recessive inheritance: case report and review of the literature.

We describe an infant with congenital vocal cord paralysis born to consanguineous parents. While autosomal dominant and X-linked inheritance have been previously reported in this condition, we conclude that the degree of parental consanguinity in this case strongly suggests autosomal recessive inheritance. Although we cannot exclude X-linked inheritance, evidence from animal studies demonstrates autosomal recessive inheritance and provides a possible molecular basis for congenital vocal cord paralysis.

Delta-9-THC exposure during zebra finch sensorimotor vocal learning increases cocaine reinforcement in adulthood.

Zebra finches are songbirds that learn vocal patterns during a sensitive period of development that approximates adolescence. Exposure of these animals to a cannabinoid agonist during their period of sensorimotor vocal learning alters song patterns produced in adulthood. Thus, songbirds have unique value in studying developmental effects of drug exposure on a naturally learned behavior. A missing feature of this animal model has been a method to study drug reinforcement of behavior. To address this gap we have adapted place conditioning methods, used previously to determine that singing behavi

Identification and functional recording of the recurrent nerve by electrical stimulation during neck surgery.

A method for identification and functional recording of the recurrent nerve during neck operations is described. The basic principle implicates electrical stimulation of the recurrent nerve causing adduction of the vocal cord registered by means of a balloon placed between the vocal cords. Three different recording methods have been tested in animal experiments and during 26 neck operations on patients. The most simple method employed is recommended as a routine procedure, likely to reduce surgical damage to the recurrent nerve.

Partial thyroarytenoid myectomy: an animal study investigating a proposed new treatment for adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

A new surgical procedure with potential application for the treatment of adductor spasmodic dysphonia was performed on ten rabbits to assess surgical effects on laryngeal function. Using an external approach, partial unilateral thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle excision was performed through a thyroplasty cartilage window. The contralateral side was left undisturbed as a control. The animals were studied acutely and at 3 months using videolaryngoscopy. Electrophysiologic measurements were recorded at 3 months. The procedure was well tolerated by all animals, with no postoperative infection or aspirat

The histological components of the phoniatrical body-cover model in minipigs of different ages.

Pigs are models in human phoniatry. However, features of maturation and ageing have not been considered with regard to the so-called body-cover model in this species. Therefore, the glottis of "young" (2-3 months; n = 6) and "old" (4-7 years; n = 6) minipigs was investigated. Their cranial (CraF) and caudal (CauF) vocal folds were histomorphometrically and stratigraphically analysed with emphasis on their amounts of collagen structures and elastic fibres. A dense subepithelial layer (SEL) was a distinct feature of CraF and CauF of both age groups; it was spread upon the underlying loose, flexi

Prospective investigation of nimodipine for acute vocal fold paralysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nimodipine has been shown to be beneficial for recovery from acute vocal fold paralysis (AVFP) in an animal model. METHODS: prospective, open-label trial of patients with AVFP was performed using nimodipine. Consecutive patients were evaluated and offered nimodipine therapy. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients were considered for treatment with nimodipine. Thirteen did not qualify for inclusion, 5 were lost to follow-up, and 7 had side effects requiring cessation of treatment. Thus 28 patients (30 paralyzed vocal folds) were analyzed. Eighteen of the paralyzed vocal folds experienced

A novel model for examining recovery of phonation after vocal nerve damage.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury remains a dominant clinical issue in laryngology. To date, no animal model of laryngeal reinnervation has offered an outcome measure that can reflect the degree of recovery based on vocal function. We present an avian model system for studying recovery of learned vocalizations after nerve injury. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective animal study. METHODS: Digital recordings of bird song were made from 11 adult male zebra finches; nine birds underwent bilateral crushing of the nerve supplying the vocal organ, and two birds underwent sham surgery. Effects of Repeated Intracordal Glucocorticoid Injection on the Histology and Gene Expression of Rat Vocal Folds.

OBJECTIVES: Local injection of glucocorticoids (GCs) into the vocal folds has been used for treating the vocal fold lesions. While the positive effects on vocal fold nodules, polyps, or scarring have been clinically reported, some concern remains around the potential adverse effects such as vocal fold atrophy, and the mechanisms remain unclear. The present study examined the histology and gene expression of locally injected GC into the vocal folds in rats. METHODS: Thirteen-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the experiments. Triamcinolone acetonide (TAA) or saline were administere

Histologic characterization of human scarred vocal folds.

Vocal fold scarring remains a significant problem. Although several animal models have been developed to improve our understanding of the histopathology, the histologic features of scarred human vocal folds have rarely been reported. The present case studies aimed to define the histologic changes of scarred human vocal folds caused by cordectomy or cordotomy. Ten patients with the scarred vocal folds were involved in this study. Nine patients with early glottic cancer underwent endoscopic cordectomy, and one patient underwent superficial cordotomy for idiopathic scar. The postcordectomy or cor
