Tinnitus Is Associated With Improved Cognitive Performance in Non-hispanic Elderly With Hearing Loss.

Because hearing loss is a high-risk factor for cognitive decline, tinnitus, a comorbid condition of hearing loss, is often presumed to impair cognition. The present cross-sectional study aimed to delineate the interaction of tinnitus and cognition in the elderly with and without hearing loss after adjusting for covariates in race, age, sex, education, pure tone average, hearing aids, and physical well-being. Participants included 643 adults (60-69 years old; 51.3% females) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011-2012), and 1,716 (60-69 years old; 60.4% females)

Basic knowledge of the medication regimen correlates with performance on cognitive function tests and diagnosis of dementia in elderly patients referred to a geriatric assessment unit.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline and dementia are highly prevalent amongst the elderly. Medication management problems are also prevalent in this population. Although both problems coexist, the quantitative association between them has not been comprehensively analyzed. METHOD: A prospective cross-sectional study of a successive cohort of 425 patients was performed in a community-based geriatric assessment unit. Personal information, results of cognitive function tests, a diagnosis of dementia and an examination of basic knowledge of the medication regimen were recorded and entered into a patien

Behavioral Tests for Central Auditory Processing Evaluation in the Investigation of Early Manifestations of Cognitive Decline and Dementias: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: This scoping review aimed to identify behavioral tests for central auditory processing (CAP) assessment that can be used to investigate early manifestations of pathological cognitive decline in adults and the older adults. Early detection of cognitive decline and dementias is a strategy for delaying the progression of these clinical conditions. METHOD: This scoping review was conducted using various online databases and gray literature sources, including the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQues

A haplotype spanning KIAA0319 and TTRAP is associated with normal variation in reading and spelling ability.

BACKGROUND: KIAA0319 (6p22.2) has recently been implicated as a susceptibility gene for dyslexia. We aimed to find further support for this gene by examining its association with reading and spelling ability in adolescent twins and their siblings unselected for dyslexia. METHODS: Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in or near the KIAA0319 gene were typed in 440 families with up to five offspring who had been tested on reading and spelling tasks. Family-based association analyses were performed, including a univariate analysis of the principal component reading and spelling score derive

Visual Impairment, Eye Disease, and 3-Year Cognitive Decline: The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

PURPOSE: To examine the longitudinal association between vision-related variables and the 3-year change in cognitive test scores in a community-dwelling sample of adults and to explore whether sex, education, or hearing loss act as effect modifiers. METHODS: Data came from two waves of a 3-year population-based prospective cohort study (Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging), which consisted of 30,097 randomly selected people aged 45-85 years from 7 Canadian provinces. Visual impairment (VI) was defined as binocular presenting visual acuity worse than 20/40. Participants were asked if they had

Non-word repetition in Persian learning toddlers with typical development.

In the current research, non-word repetition (NWR) skills of Persian learning toddlers and its association with phonological accuracy and language measures, such as percentage consonant correct (PCC), mean length utterance (MLU), and expressive vocabulary was evaluated. First, the Persian task of NWR, comprising 15 non-words, was developed and validated. Forty-four typically developing Persian learning toddlers aged from 24 to 30 months were recruited in this project. Word and NWR responses were elicited during play. MLU was investigated using serial picture description. Furthermore, the Persi

Loss of basic lexical knowledge in old age.

BACKGROUND: Basic lexical skills are hypothesised to be relatively preserved in mild dementia, but clinical studies have reported inconsistent results. METHODS: More than 400 older Catholic nuns, priests and brothers recruited from groups across the USA completed annual evaluations for up to 15 years, died and underwent brain autopsy. Each clinical evaluation included administration of a 20-item word reading test and a 15-item vocabulary test, which were combined to form a composite measure of word knowledge. In a uniform neuropathological examination, Alzheimer's disease pathology was quanti

Assessing neglect dyslexia with compound words.

OBJECTIVE: The neglect syndrome is frequently associated with neglect dyslexia (ND), which is characterized by omissions or misread initial letters of single words. ND is usually assessed with standardized reading texts in clinical settings. However, particularly in the chronic phase of ND, patients often report reading deficits in everyday situations but show (nearly) normal performances in test situations that are commonly well-structured. To date, sensitive and standardized tests to assess the severity and characteristics of ND are lacking, although reading is of high relevance for daily li

Meta-analysis of the nonword reading deficit in specific reading disorder.

A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether specific reading disorder (SRD) groups demonstrate a deficit in using phonological recoding strategies. Thirty-four studies were reviewed that had compared the nonword reading performances of SRD groups with reading-level matched (RL) control groups. The average nonword reading difference between groups across the total number of studies was moderate (d = 0.65, N = 2865). Three predictors of the size of group differences in nonword reading ability were identified. Studies that used passage reading tests to match groups for reading level foun

Urine patterns, peptide levels and IgA/IgG antibodies to food proteins in children with dyslexia.

There is an association between psychiatric disorders and dyslexia. In some psychiatric disorders abnormal urinary peptide patterns and peptide levels, and elevated levels of IgA antibodies to food proteins have been detected. These abnormalities are probably due to insufficient breakdown of the proteins gluten and casein. The aim of this study was to discover whether such abnormalities could be found in urine samples and serum of children with dyslexia. After screening 291 pupils in the fourth grade, 15 dyslexics and 15 controls were pairwise matched by gender, age, and cognitive level. Word

Recognition and reading aloud of kana and kanji word: an fMRI study.

It has been proposed that different brain regions are recruited for processing two Japanese writing systems, namely, kanji (morphograms) and kana (syllabograms). However, this difference may depend upon what type of word was used and also on what type of task was performed. Using fMRI, we investigated brain activation for processing kanji and kana words with similar high familiarity in two tasks: word recognition and reading aloud. During both tasks, words and non-words were presented side by side, and the subjects were required to press a button corresponding to the real word in the word reco

Implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Implicit memory refers to the influence of past experience on current behavior without conscious awareness of these experiences. Eighteen FMS patients and 25 healthy individuals accomplished a word-stem completion task. As possible factors mediating the expected impairment, pain severity, emotional disorders, and medication were taken into account. The patients displayed markedly reduced task performance and higher levels of depression and anxiety. Among the clinical fea

Sex differences in neural processing of language among children.

Why females generally perform better on language tasks than males is unknown. Sex differences were here identified in children (ages 9-15) across two linguistic tasks for words presented in two modalities. Bilateral activation in the inferior frontal and superior temporal gyri and activation in the left fusiform gyrus of girls was greater than in boys. Activation in the left inferior frontal and fusiform regions of girls was also correlated with linguistic accuracy irregardless of stimulus modality, whereas correlation with performance accuracy in boys depended on the modality of word presenta

Imagery and associations of adolescents reflected in their behaviour.

In adolescent girls, by means of imagery and associations it was studied, which images and associations produce concepts expressing activities which, on the one hand, protect and promote health (exercises, use of seat belts, and condoms) and, on the other hand, represent a health risk (drinking beer and liquor, cigarette smoking, marijuana smoking and cocain use, and sexual intercourse) and how they influence the respondents' behaviour. Nursing school students were interviewed by means of a questionnaire published by the Oregon Research Institute, USA. The respondents gave a total number of 15

Captopril and enalapril improve cognition and depressed mood in hypertensive patients.

UNLABELLED: In this study, we evaluate the effects of two angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), captopril and enalapril given chronically as antihypertensive treatment, on certain cognitive and emotional processes in humans. Thirty-nine subjects with mild to moderate hypertension and fifteen normotensive controls were divided into four groups consisting of normotensive and hypertensive subjects taking captopril, enalapril, or no medication at all. The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and the Wechsler Memory Scale were used to evaluate their cognitive functioning. Mood changes in a

Reading in developmental prosopagnosia: Evidence for a dissociation between word and face recognition.

OBJECTIVE: Recent models suggest that face and word recognition may rely on overlapping cognitive processes and neural regions. In support of this notion, face recognition deficits have been demonstrated in developmental dyslexia. Here we test whether the opposite association can also be found, that is, impaired reading in developmental prosopagnosia. METHOD: We tested 10 adults with developmental prosopagnosia and 20 matched controls. All participants completed the Cambridge Face Memory Test, the Cambridge Face Perception test and a Face recognition questionnaire used to quantify everyday fa
