Case Report: A FBN1 frameshift-and-nonsense mutation and aortic dissection in Marfan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder primarily affecting the cardiovascular, ocular, and skeletal systems. Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of mortality in MFS. Mutations in the FBN1 gene, which encodes fibrillin-1, a critical extracellular matrix protein, are the predominant cause of the disorder. CASE PRESENTATION: On March 11, 2024, we diagnosed a 30-year-old female proband with MFS based on the revised Ghent criteria, presenting with aortic root aneurysm, aortic dissection, multiple skeletal abnormalities, and a family his

Redo aortic arch repair using trifurcated hybrid prosthesis after failed Ascyrus medical dissection stent treatment.

BACKGROUND: The management of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) using the Ascyrus Medical Dissection Stent (AMDS) can lead to complications due to the persistence of the false lumen (FL). This case report presents two instances of failed AMDS treatment for ATAAD, highlighting the novel use of a trifurcated hybrid prosthesis for redo aortic arch repair using a minimally invasive frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 57-year-old male, previously treated with AMDS for ATAAD, presented with an enlarging aortic arch and persistent FL two years post-surgery caused

Prone Position in Treatment of Hypoxemia in Patients Who Underwent Type A Aortic Dissection Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative hypoxemia is a high-risk complication after acute type A aortic dissection (TAAD) surgery. Prone position (PP) is an effective treatment for acute respiratory failure, which may improve the gas exchange of the injured lung and the patient's survival. PP is reported to improve the respiratory condition after cardiac surgery. However, limited data exist on the effect of PP in patients who underwent acute TAAD surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcomes of seven patients with severe hypoxemia who underwent PP after acute TAAD surgery. The results

Ovarian Weight, Follicle Count and Retrieved Oocyte Characteristics in West African Dwarf Goat Does Experimentally Infected with Trypanosoma brucei.

Trypanosomosis has been described as the single largest disease entity limiting livestock development in sub-Saharan Africa. The effects on ovarian weight, follicle count and retrieved oocyte characteristics in ten West African dwarf goat does (control=5, infected=5) experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei were investigated. The does were fed with elephant grass and supplement (15.23% CP) daily. Infected does received 4.8x105 T. brucei intravenously and thereafter, all does were synchronized using Lutalyse®. The results showed that the differences between control and infected does for

Total aortic arch replacement surgery with a Core temperature of 34 °C.

BACKGROUND: Traditional aortic arch replacement surgery must be performed under moderate or deep hypothermia (22-28 °C) and circulatory arrest. Hypothermia and hypoperfusion can cause damage to the nervous system; therefore, postoperative brain and spinal cord complications are common. Improvements in surgical techniques are necessary to solve this problem. Herein, we report a method of total aortic arch replacement that can be performed at a core temperature of 34 °C, similar to other simple cardiac operations. CASE PRESENTATION: Four patients underwent surgery with this technique (3 males a

[Clinical presentation of cowpox virus infection in South American camelids - A review].

Cowpox virus (CPXV) infection is a reportable and potentially zoonotic disease that occurs sporadically in a variety of animals. During the past six decades, CPXV infection has been extensively researched and described in both domestic (cat, dog, horse, cattle) and zoo animals (e. g. elephant, rhinoceros, okapi). Of note, a review of the literature produced only three reports of CPXV in individual or small groups of South American camelids. The goal of this review was to describe the current knowledge as it relates to clinical features of CPXV infection in South American camelids and to compar

The electrocardiogram of vertebrates: Evolutionary changes from ectothermy to endothermy.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) reveals that heart chamber activation and repolarization are much faster in mammals and birds compared to ectothermic vertebrates of similar size. Temperature, however, affects electrophysiology of the heart and most data from ectotherms are determined at body temperatures lower than those of mammals and birds. The present manuscript is a review of the effects of temperature on intervals in the ECG of ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates rather than a hypothesis-testing original research article. However, the conclusions are supported by the inclusion of original

Partial aortic root remodeling for root reconstruction in patients with acute type A dissection.

In the present study, we reported our experience with partial aortic root remodeling for root reconstruction in patients with acute type A dissection, which involves in non-coronary sinus and/or the right coronary sinus with just one trimmed Dacron graft. Between February 2001 and May 2010, we performed partial aortic root remodeling in 40 patients, who underwent emergency surgical intervention. The dissected sinuses were excised leaving a 3-5 mm rim of the aortic wall from the attached aortic valve cusps. A short piece (4-5 cm) of collagen coated woven polyester vascular prosthesis was trimme

ANTIDOG IgG SECONDARY ANTIBODY SUCCESSFULLY DETECTS IgG IN A VARIETY OF AQUATIC MAMMALS.

Serological tests play an important role in the detection of wildlife diseases. However, while there are many commercial assays and reagents available for domestic species, there is a need to develop efficient serological assays for wildlife. In recent years, marine mammals have represented a wildlife group with emerging infectious diseases, such as influenza, brucellosis, and leptospirosis. However, with the exception of disease-agent-specific assays or functional assays, few reports describe the use of antibody detection assays in marine mammals. In an indirect enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA

Prevalence and source of trypanosome infections in field-captured vector flies (Glossina pallidipes) in southeastern Zambia.

The prevalence of trypanosome infections in tsetse flies, Glossina pallidipes, collected from Chiawa and Chakwenga in Zambia with endemic trypanosomosis was assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Out of the 550 G. pallidipes, 58 (10.5%) flies were found to harbor trypanosome DNA. Infection rates of tsetse with Trypanosoma vivax universal, Trypanosoma congolense savannah, T. congolense forest and T. congolense kilifi were 4.2% (23/550), 4.7% (26/550), 1.1% (6/550) and 1.6% (9/550), respectively. To determine the mammalian hosts of T. congolense and T. vivax infections from the tsetse flie

One-stage repair of extensive chronic aortic dissection using the arch-first technique and bilateral anterior thoracotomy.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated a one-stage technique for extensive replacement of the thoracic aorta in patients with chronic aortic dissection. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with chronic expanding thoracic aortic dissections (48 type A, 3 type B with proximal extension) were treated with a single procedure using a bilateral anterior thoracotomy, hypothermic circulatory arrest, and reperfusion of the arch vessels first to minimize brain ischemia. Forty-six patients had previous operations: for acute type A aortic dissection (n = 36), aortic valve disease (n = 6), or coronary artery disease (n = 4). T

Built for bulk: posture, microanatomy and soft tissue shaped gigantism in Sauropoda.

Sauropodomorph dinosaurs show how appendicular skeletal architecture accommodated extreme increases in body mass. Although sauropod gigantism has been linked to columnar limbs, wide-gauge posture, thick articular cartilage and tubular long-bone organization, the biomechanical interaction among these components is poorly understood. Here, we examine how femo ral shape, internal bone architecture and articular soft tissues influenced mechanical scaling across Sauropodomorpha. We generated three-dimensional femoral models spanning early sauropodomorphs, narrow-gauge diplodocoids, intermediate-gau

Transatrial left-ventricular cannulation for a shaggy aorta in aortic arch surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ascending aortic cannulation is the standard arterial inflow strategy for cardiovascular surgery that requires cardiopulmonary bypass. However, this approach can be problematic in patients with extensive atheromatous disease of the ascending aorta, commonly referred to as shaggy aorta, because of the increased risk of thromboembolic complications. Therefore, alternative cannulation strategies are required in such high-risk settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presented with a 55-mm distal aortic arch aneurysm accompanied by an extensively shaggy aorta involving the asc

An ancient alpharetrovirus lineage in bats: Evolutionary insights and possible roles in reproduction.

Alpharetroviruses are an important group of pathogens known to cause leukemias and tumors, and were historically considered to be restricted to avian hosts. The identification of alpharetrovirus-like envelopes in bat genomes has hinted at a potentially wider host range, although their relations to modern alpharetroviruses and distribution remains unclear. Through a paleovirological screening of 818 vertebrate genomes we identified CHIRalphaEnv, a lineage that belongs firmly within alpharetroviruses, and emerged from a cross-class transmission from saurian hosts. We determine that CHIRalphaEnv

Type B aortic dissection following personalized external aortic root support (PEARS): a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Personalized external aortic root support (PEARS) is a prophylactic surgical technique designed to stabilize the aortic root in patients with heritable thoracic aortic disease (HTAD), including Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndromes. Although early outcomes have been encouraging, distal aortic complications after PEARS remain poorly characterized. Type B aortic dissection (TBAD) following PEARS implantation has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two patients with HTAD who developed complicated TBAD several years after PEARS implantation. The first patient, a woman with L
