Comparison of ulnar-shortening osteotomy with a new Trimed dynamic compression system versus the Synthes dynamic compression system: clinical study.

PURPOSE: Ulnar-shortening osteotomy has become common in the treatment of symptomatic positive ulnar variance. Our goal was to evaluate prospectively a new dynamic compression plating system in comparison with a commonly used dynamic compression system. In contrast with other systems, the new system uses a slotted hole that enables fixation of the plate to the bone prior to performing the osteotomy, a fitted compression clamp, and a lag screw. Cutting guides that attach directly to plate eliminate the need for freehand osteotomies. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients were treated with a 3.5-mm, 6-

Rethinking dynamics: static amino acid PET parameters vs. dynamic amino acid PET parameters for the detection of tumor progression in patients with post-treatment glioma.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether dynamic amino-acid (AA) positron-emission tomography (PET) has additional diagnostic value over static AA-PET to distinguish tumor progression (TP) from treatment-related abnormalities (TRA) in patients with post-treatment glioma. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with glioma with suspected TP who underwent dynamic AA-PET imaging. The final diagnoses were based on histopathology and/or clinical-radiological follow-up. The static PET parameters included the mean and maximum tumor-to-brain ratio (TBRmax and TBRmean, respectively) and the

New Insights into Intersystem Crossing in Substituted Aromatics: Singlet-Triplet Conversion in Carbonyl-Substituted Anthracenes.

A new study is presented to elucidate the photodynamics of model carbonyl-substituted polyaromatics targeting the relevance of carbonyl-group orientation and torsional re-equilibration on intersystem crossing (ISC). Our experiments focused on 9-acetylanthracene (9AA) using femtosecond resolved spectroscopy. In the ground state of this molecule, steric interactions force the carbonyl substituent into a near-perpendicular orientation relative to the aromatic system. The time-resolved signals from 9AA show that ISC takes place after spectral shifts that reflect the evolution of the carbonyl group

The Inhibitory Effects of Naringin in a Rat Model of Postoperative Intraperitoneal Adhesion Formation.

BACKGROUND: Many attempts have been made to inhibit the formation of postoperative intraperitoneal adhesions, but the results have been discouraging. Therefore, the identification of effective preventative measures or treatments is of great importance. In this study, the substantial potential of naringin (NG) to reduce peritoneal adhesions was validated in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A rat peritoneal adhesion model was established by abrasion of the cecum and its opposite intraperitoneal region under aseptic surgical conditions. After the operation, three groups of NG-treated rats wer

Effects of social structure and management on risk of disease establishment in wild pigs.

Contact heterogeneity among hosts determines invasion and spreading dynamics of infectious disease, thus its characterization is essential for identifying effective disease control strategies. Yet, little is known about the factors shaping contact networks in many wildlife species and how wildlife management actions might affect contact networks. Wild pigs in North America are an invasive, socially structured species that pose a health concern for domestic swine given their ability to transmit numerous devastating diseases such as African swine fever (ASF). Using proximity loggers and GPS data

Intrahost cytomegalovirus population genetics following antibody pretreatment in a monkey model of congenital transmission.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is the leading non-genetic cause of congenital birth defects worldwide. While several studies have addressed the genetic composition of viral populations in newborns diagnosed with HCMV, little is known regarding mother-to-child viral transmission dynamics and how therapeutic interventions may impact within-host viral populations. Here, we investigate how preexisting CMV-specific antibodies shape the maternal viral population and intrauterine virus transmission. Specifically, we characterize the genetic composition of CMV populations in a monkey model of

Dynamic balance function in phasic cervical dystonia following Botulinum toxin therapy.

Previous research by our group revealed normal dynamic balance function in pure tonic cervical dystonia (CD) with impaired equilibrium in phasic CD patients investigated at least 3 months following Botulinum toxin (BtxA) treatment. The current study was performed to determine whether impaired dynamic equilibrium in phasic CD is influenced by symptomatic treatment with BtxA. Dynamic balance was tested in 20 patients with phasic CD on a dynamic platform with a cylindrical curved base (stabilometer) 4 weeks following BtxA treatment. Balance was assessed by the linear displacement of the platform

Discrimination between patients with acoustic neuroma and with peripheral vestibular lesion by human posture dynamics.

A group of normal subjects (n = 17) was compared with two groups of patients, either with vestibular neuritis (n = 18) or with acoustic neuroma (n = 35) by means of posturography when stance was perturbed with vibrators attached to the calf muscles. Dynamic control of human posture was quantified by means of system identification, and the characteristic parameters of swiftness, stiffness, and damping of a transfer function from vibration to force platform response were used for further comparison. Fisher linear discriminant analysis was used to distinguish sets of parameters characteristic of

Pharmacological/dynamic rehabilitative behavioural therapy for premature ejaculation: Results of a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Premature ejaculation (PE) is a sexual disorder characterised by excessive rapidity of orgasm. It is defined as either primary (60%), present since the onset of sexual activity, or secondary (40%), manifesting later in life. To date, dapoxetine is the only preparation approved for the on-demand treatment of PE. However, side effects, costs associated with the treatment of chronic PE, drug dependence and its variable effectiveness leads to a not insignificant drop-out rate. Dynamic rehabilitative/behavioural therapy may be a viable therapeutic option, working alongside pharmacologic
