PURPOSE: To assess the number of laser burns applied to the peripheral retina to treat retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in a recent population of patients and to compare that number with historical data.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective chart review of all patients treated for ROP within a single practice from 2002-2004. There were 183 eyes from 93 patients. Sufficient data for analysis were available on 112 eyes from 57 patients. Data from these patients were compared to those of patients reported upon in 1991.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is an autosomal-dominant disorder that frequently presents with epistaxis and gastrointestinal bleeding which may be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The retinopathy of prematurity is a proliferative disease of the retinal blood vessels, occurring in the prematurely born babies. As the life support conditions for the prematurely born babies have improved, the retinopathy of prematurity has became a problem, both for the neonatologists and the ophthalmologists. This paper discusses the pathogeny, the risk factors, the classification criteria and especially the methods for the screening and therapy of this disease.

PURPOSE: Contact versus noncontact transscleral neodymium:YAG laser cyclophotocoagulation was compared in a rabbit model with respect to the effects on intraocular pressure and pathologic findings.

Silicone oil as endotamponade in cases with attached retina is only indicated in a few very selected cases. These are cases with a high risk of intravitreal hemorrhage and a need for quick visual rehabilitation. We examined 23 patients, who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil filling.
