Clinical effect of occipitocervical and subaxial cervical fusion constructs on range of motion: comprehensive guide based on biomechanical cadaveric testing on 1009 motion segments.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the relative contribution of each cervical motion segment is vital for assessing the effect of fusion constructs on range of motion (ROM). Many spine surgeons are familiar with the work of Panjabi and White, from which these values have historically been cited. However, their data were obtained from a limited number of subjects, and methodological shortcomings have since been identified. In this study, the authors sought to improve understanding of segmental ROM using data from standardized biomechanical tests involving a large number of intact cervical spine specimens…

Respiratory and cardiac motion correction in positron emission tomography using elastic motion approach for simultaneous abdomen and thorax positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac and respiratory motions in clinical positron emission tomography (PET) are a major contributor to inaccurate PET quantification and lesion characterisation. In this study, an elastic motion-correction (eMOCO) technique based on mass preservation optical flow is adapted and investigated for positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MRI) applications. METHODS: The eMOCO technique was investigated in a motion management QA phantom and in twenty-four patients who underwent PET-MRI for dedicated liver imaging and nine patients for cardiac PET-MRI evaluation. …

RSME: Respiration-Driven Synchronized Motion Estimator for Real-Time Thoracic 3-D CT Reconstruction Using Low-Rank Motion Fields and Dose-Free Surface Imaging.

Real-time 3-D CT reconstruction during radiotherapy, based on planning 4-D CT, has emerged as a central area of interest in the field of image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). However, current methodologies still rely on time-consuming patient-specific training, real-time registration, or additional radiation doses. Our contribution, respiration-driven synchronized motion estimator (RSME), represents a novel and efficient forward propagation network, leveraging an explicit spatial-temporal low-rank decomposition of displacement fields and surface imaging to enable real-time 3-D CT reconstruction du…

Editorial Commentary: Limited Preoperative Range of Motion Is Associated With Range of Motion Deficits After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: "If the Knee Is Not Straight, Wait".

Optimal timing of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) remains under debate. Prolonging time between injury and ACLR risks damaging the meniscus and chondral surface, as well as delays return to play. Early ACLR may be associated with postoperative stiffness or arthrofibrosis. We emphasize that optimal timing for ACLR depends on criterion-based return of knee range of motion and quadriceps strength, not a quantitative temporal period. The length of time is far less important that the quality of prereconstruction care provided. Prereconstruction care includes "prehabilitation," incl…

Accurate Shoulder Angles Can Be Detected in Single Plane Motions While Body Armor is Worn: A Validation of the HumanTrak Markerless Motion Capture System.

INTRODUCTION: Measuring shoulder mobility is essential for assessing function, especially in occupational settings like the military, where movement tasks in the frontal and sagittal planes are involved. Markerless motion capture systems like the HumanTrak may provide an expedient field platform to quantify upper body kinematics in occupational settings because of their portability. Further validation of these systems against established methodologies, such as marker-based motion capture, is required before upscaling their use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen participants (7 males and 10 fem…

Can lower-limb exoskeletons support sit-to-stand motions in frail elderly without crutches? A study combining optimal control and motion capture.

With the global geriatric population expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, different assistive technologies have been developed to tackle a … a more detailed study of crutch-less exoskeleton use, analyzing in particular the most challenging motion, sit-to-stand (STS). It combines motion capture and optimal control approaches to evaluate and compare the STS dynamics with the TWIN exoskeleton with and without crutches. The results show trajectories that are significantly faster than the exoskel …

The Correlation Between Pelvic Motion and Lumbar Motion in Patients Presenting With a Lumbar Spinal Pathology: Implications for Assessing Dislocation Risk in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Arthroplasty surgeons use the change in sacral slope (ΔSS) from sitting to standing as a measure of spinal motion. The relationship between ΔSS and the change in lumbar lordosis (ΔLL), an established spinal motion measure, has not been well studied. This study aims to determine the correlation between ΔSS and ΔLL. METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting to a spine clinic from 2020 to 2021 at a single institution were retrospectively studied. Standing and sitting lateral radiographs were measured for SS and LL. Patients were divided using ΔSS and ΔLL into stiff (0°-9°), normal (10…

HUP: A Holistic Uncertainty-Aware Motion Planner for Autonomous Driving.

Uncertainties arising from inherent observation randomness and model limitations significantly affect the robustness and adaptability of motion planning for autonomous vehicles. Existing methods typically incorporate uncertainty into planning outcomes or risk measures but do not explicitly model and propagate it throughout the planning pipeline, leaving its intrinsic influence underexplored. To address this limitation, we propose a holistic uncertainty-aware motion planner (HUP) that explicitly models and propagates uncertainties across the entire pipeline. In the scene representation stage, s…

Patterns in motion: Choreographing dynamic cell behaviours during tissue repair.

Tissue repair is a dynamic, multicellular response that relies on the precise spatiotemporal coordination of diverse cell types. Here, we discuss how recent advances have accelerated our mechanistic understanding of these collective cellular behaviours, particularly in epithelial barrier tissues like the skin. We highlight studies unravelling the intricate crosstalk that patterns cell behaviours across the repairing tissue and how vulnerable cells are endowed with striking stress resilience and memory. The integration of cutting-edge live imaging, single-cell profiling and computational approa

SONIC: Supersizing motion tracking for natural humanoid whole-body control.

Despite the rise of billion-parameter foundation models trained across thousands of graphical processing units (GPUs), similar scaling gains have not been shown for humanoid control. Current neural controllers for humanoids remain modest in size, target a limited set of behaviors, and are trained on a handful of GPUs. We show that scaling model capacity, data, and compute yields a generalist humanoid controller capable of natural, robust whole-body movements. We position motion tracking as a scalable task for humanoid control, leveraging dense supervision from diverse motion-capture data to ac…

Wearable impedance oculography: a new method for eye motion classification.

Electrooculography (EOG) for eye movement detection and condition monitoring are affected by variable baseline drifts and are susceptible to motion artifact-induced noise. To address these limitations, this work introduces an eye movement classification approach, covering blink, saccade, smooth pursuit, vergence, and vestibulo-ocular movements, using impedance measurement from an eye wearable system. Impedance oculography (IOG) data were collected from subjects performing the specified eye movements using a spectacle-mounted two-electrode system connected to a IOG measurement set up, which, wi…

The predictive mind in motion: exploring visuomotor expertise through interception.

This study examined the role of predictive processing mechanisms in naturalistic visuomotor skill learning. We investigated whether the acquisition of an interceptive skill was characterised by encoding and using learned probabilistic associations. Forty-five participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention or control group and practiced intercepting bouncing balls in virtual reality across two sessions. Only the intervention group received probabilistic visual cues - specifically, ball and room colours - that signalled likely bounce trajectories, offering an opportunity to learn

Tracking electrophysiological dynamics of prior exploitation in visual motion perception.

Motion perception relies on predictive mechanisms to facilitate optimal interaction with moving objects by integrating prior knowledge about motion dynamics and perceptual input. Evidence of these predictive processes can be found in the Representational Momentum (RM) effect, in which the perceived position of a moving object is displaced forward in the direction of motion. This is an ideal framework to assess whether modulations of event-related potentials (ERPs) observed for task-related "contextual" priors extend to deeply ingrained "structural" priors, acquired by experience or connected t…

De novo fast motion computation in the primate visual cortex.

Objects move through space and time, generating sequential visuotopic activations in all sighted animals, leading to velocity perception defined by direction and speed. The primary visual cortex (V1) only encodes directionality at low speed, yet we effortlessly perceive velocities ranging from 0.25°/s to 500°/s. To resolve this paradox, we recorded neuronal responses to moving dots, gratings, and movies across the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), V1, middle temporal (MT) area, and medial superior temporal (MST) area of the macaque motion pathway. Regardless of cell type and motion stimuli, V1…

MoSA-Det: motion state adaptive object detection for sports videos.

Object detection in sports videos serves as a fundamental task for applications such as intelligent broadcasting, tactical analysis, and athlete tracking. Existing methods face two critical challenges when processing sports scenarios: (1) Motion blur-induced feature degradation, where fast-moving objects generate severe motion blur that leads to indistinct boundaries, texture loss, and significantly reduced feature response intensity, severely weakening the discriminative capability of detectors; (2) Temporal aggregation failure, where existing temporal methods assume small inter-frame displac…
