Spatio-temporal dynamics of brain function across depression severity in binge-type eating disorders.

Functional connectivity (FC) and intrinsic neural timescales (INT) characterize the spatio-temporal neural dynamics of binge-type eating disorders (EDs). We examined FC and INT abnormalities in visual-related regions of patients with binge-type EDs, focusing on the impact of depression severity. We recruited 72 patients with binge-type EDs and 39 healthy controls (HCs). Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 (minimal/mild depression) and Group 2 (moderate/severe depression). FC alterations in key visual-related regions across three groups were analyzed using ANCOVA (P < 0.05, FWE-corre

Investigating time distortion in Parkinson's disease considering impaired frontoparietal network and changes in the brain dynamic.

Objective. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms. Despite extensive research, the neural structure of time distortion, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the neurobiological origins of time distortion by analyzing dynamic features in PD patients compared to control participants.Approach. We used PD and control electroencephalography (EEG) signals to investigate brain function during time distortion. The EEG signal was recorded during an interval-timing task. Following artifact reduction and EEG signal segme

Abnormal spontaneous regional white-matter brain activity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies on white matter (WM) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have focused primarily on its structural aspects. This study aimed to investigate any abnormal spontaneous WM neural activity in patients with OCD. METHODS: The study was based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 27 patients with OCD and 24 matched healthy controls (HC). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were used to explore spontaneous neural activity changes in the subjects' WM regions. A two-sample Stude

Early event-related potential differentiation of alcohol cues associates with subjective craving levels in severe alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) contributes to 4.7% of deaths worldwide, yet assessment relies on subjective craving reports. Event-related potentials (ERPs) provide objective markers of cue reactivity linked to craving and motivational salience. However, emphasis on later components (P3) may overlook earlier, automatic processes reflecting the transition from controlled to habitual responding. This study examined whether early and late ERP components differentiate alcohol from non-alcohol stimuli in severe AUD and associate with craving. METHODS: Seventy-eight inpatients with severe AU

Toward a spatiotemporal neurocognitive framework of manipulable object processing.

The neural processing of small handheld manipulable objects (henceforth tools) involves a series of brain regions that have been well characterized over the last decades, both anatomically and functionally. But neural processing unfolds over time, requiring the static spatial descriptions that emerged from this research to be accompanied by temporal dynamics between the nodes of the tool network. Temporally-resolved techniques (such as M/EEG) are critical in this endeavor. Yet, to date, studies using such techniques have not been integrated with this spatial depiction. We analyzed M/EEG tempor

Abstract Property-selective Clusters Link Continuous Property Representations to Discrete Category-selective Regions in Human Higher Visual Cortex.

Object representations in the human higher visual cortex (HVC) support complex recognition behaviors early in development, yet the principles linking continuous dimensional representations and discrete category-selective areas in the HVC remain incompletely understood. Here, we propose a "property-cluster-category" organization that bridges object conceptual dimensions and discrete category areas in the HVC. Using a large-scale naturalistic stimulus data set and voxel-wise encoding methods, we analyzed the encoding patterns of a low-dimensional abstract property space and identified distinct b

Detection and imaging of chemicals and hidden explosives using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and deep learning.

Detecting concealed chemicals and explosives remains a critical challenge in global security. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) offers a promising non-invasive and stand-off detection technique owing to its ability to penetrate optically opaque materials without causing ionization damage. While many chemicals exhibit distinct spectral features in the terahertz range, conventional terahertz-based detection methods often struggle in real-world environments, where variations in sample geometry, thickness, and packaging can lead to inconsistent spectral responses. In this study, we pres

Oxytocin Modulates Inhibitory Control via Neural-Temporal Mechanisms.

Inhibitory control is frequently impaired under anxiety, yet the temporal dynamics through which oxytocin (OXT) modulates this process remain poorly understood. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pharmacological event-related potential (ERP) study investigated how intranasal OXT (24 IU) influences neural and behavioral correlates of inhibitory control under threat-of-shock (anxiety) and safe conditions in 100 healthy male university students. Participants performed an interference-inhibition working memory task requiring attention to either emotional faces (social) or house scen

Altered insula modulation during salience processing in chronic spinal cord injury: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Executive functions are critical for problem-solving, planning and interference control. Even in the absence of brain damages, individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) may experience difficulties with executive functions, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study addressed this issue by investigating the neural correlates of interference control in SCI. Twenty-six individuals with chronic SCI and twenty-six controls performed the Flanker task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Interaction effects between group and condition (congruent, incongruent, neutral) wi

Regulators of Appetite in Mammals - Old and New players.

Appetite regulation is a complex yet vital concept, with several pathways conserved throughout evolution that are still to be fully understood. Appetite, or the drive to search for and consume food, is driven by the integration of different food and environmental cues, as well as internal state. It is dynamically managed by intricate systems that can be broadly categorized into homeostatic (driven by physiological energy needs) and hedonic feeding (driven by pleasure and reward). This review compiles and analyzes recently described and unconventional mechanisms of appetite control in mammals,

Contribution of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors to bottom-up amplification of frontal and parietal cortical responses to rare deviant tones in rats.

We previously reported "true" deviance detection in rat frontal and parietal cortex, reflected in amplified evoked frontal and parietal local field potential (eLFP) responses to rare deviant tones, a likely neural mechanism of bottom-up auditory attention. These amplified cortical responses could not be accounted for by stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) mechanisms alone, implying that they reflect prediction errors calculated by comparing stored expectations to current stimuli. The cholinergic system is well-known to be involved in attention, but the contributions of different acetylcholine r

The disease-specific structural pattern in Parkinson's disease and its cortical characteristics associated with gene function: a 7-Tesla MRI study.

Brain structure characteristics form the basis on regulating neuroplastic processes by genes, and structural alterations may contribute to the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) and their divergent clinical manifestations. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the relations between the genetic signatures to structural alterations in PD patients are unclear. This study aimed to integrate alterations in cortical thickness and subcortical nuclei volume (thalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala) in PD, and to explore global cortical thickness differences associated with gene function. 7-Tesla

Structural covariance of early visual cortex is negatively associated with PTSD symptoms: A Mega-Analysis from the ENIGMA PTSD workgroup.

BACKGROUND: Identifying robust neural signatures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms is important to facilitate precision psychiatry and help in understanding and treatment of the disorder. Emergent research suggests structural covariance of early visual regions is associated with later PTSD development. However, large-scale analyses are needed - in heterogeneous samples of trauma-exposed and trauma naive individuals - to determine if such a neural signature is a robust - and potentially a pretrauma - marker of vulnerability. METHODS: We analyzed data from the ENIGMA-PTSD dataset
