Deep learning automates Cobb angle measurement compared with multi-expert observers.

OBJECTIVES: Scoliosis, a prevalent condition characterized by abnormal spinal curvature leading to deformity, requires precise assessment methods for effective diagnosis and management. The Cobb angle is a widely used scoliosis quantification method that measures the degree of curvature between the tilted vertebrae. Yet, manual measuring of Cobb angles is time-consuming and labour-intensive, fraught with significant interobserver and intraobserver variability. To address these challenges and the lack of interpretability found in certain existing automated methods, we have created fully automat

Sagittal reduction of spinal deformity: Superior versus lateral screw-rod connection.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal malalignment can greatly impact a patient's quality of life. Various sagittal parameters are used as realignment goals; however, about 50% of patients end up being under-corrected postoperatively. To improve the correction, prebent rods are available with a radius of curvature corresponding to the patient's "ideal" sagittal alignment. But no studies have been done on how the radius of curvature changes according to the type of connection between the pedicle screws and rods. The goal of this experimental study was to quantify how much prebent rods flatten based on the metho

Multi-view constrained semi-supervised vertebra detection for 3D ultrasound spine volume.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a spinal disorder characterized by a three-dimensional (3D) deformity of the vertebral column. 3D ultrasound imaging has been used for scoliosis assessment, and automatic vertebra detection is important for objective evaluation of spinal deformity. However, existing automatic assessment methods are mainly based on two-dimensional (2D) projection images and require large amounts of labeled data, leading to incomplete use of volumetric ultrasound information and substantial annotation effort. PURPOSE: To develop a multi-view constrained semi-supervised learning (SSL) me

Mechanical Failures as Predicted by Achieving Local Versus Global T4-L1 Hip Axis Goals : A Single-center Experience.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive value of T4-L1 Hip Axis Error (HAE) and L1PA Error (L1PAE) on mechanical failure following adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery, and to assess how error directionality and fusion length influence outcomes. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The T4-L1 Hip Axis is a novel framework for defining normative sagittal alignment by aligning thoracic and lumbar curvatures relative to the pelvis. Prior studies suggest that deviation from this axis may contribute to mechanical complications following ASD surgery. However, the impa

Side bending radiographs and lowest instrumented vertebra in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A French quality-of-care study.

BACKGROUND: Determining which spinal levels to instrument during surgical treatment of Lenke Type 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) depends on the reducibility of the primary and secondary curve patterns. This reducibility can be evaluated in several ways, with the most popular being radiographs in bending for moderate thoracic and lumbar curvatures. Hypothesis Side-bending radiographs will alter the choice of the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) for the surgical treatment of AIS. METHODS: Thirteen experienced French spine surgeons were invited to perform surgical planning on 23 patie

The relationship between lumbopelvic flexibility and sitting posture in adult women.

Clinical observations have suggested that limited hamstring flexibility may be associated with sagittal spinal curvatures in spine flexed postures. Thus, limited hamstring flexibility may be related to large amounts of spine flexion in "slumped" sitting postures which could contribute to low back pain and injury. The aim of this study was to determine if hamstring and pelvic flexibility are associated with flexed sitting postures using a backless office chair. Forty-one healthy female adults aged 18-69  years were recruited. Subjects performed the Sit-and-Reach test to determine maximum flexib…

Laminoplasty instead of laminectomy as a decompression method in posterior instrumented fusion for degenerative cervical kyphosis with stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Posterior laminectomy with instrumented fusion is a standard procedure for treating degenerative cervical kyphosis with stenosis (DCKS). Two major disadvantages of the surgery are adhesion of the dural membrane with significant disfiguring of cervical spine and a small fusion bed around the lateral mass. One of the advantages of laminoplasty over laminectomy is the protection of the dural membrane from adhesion through preservation of posterior bony elements. This study presents the surgical outcomes of laminoplasty, instead of laminectomy, as a decompression method applied in post
