This study investigates the forces exerted on organs during swallowing, specifically focusing on identifying forces other than those resulting from direct organ contact. Using a swallowing simulator based on the moving particle method, we simulated the swallowing process of healthy individuals upon the ingestion of thickened foods, which were simulated as shear-thinning flow without yield stress. We extracted the resultant force vectors acting on the organs and shape of the bolus at each time interval. The simulation results confirmed that the bolus originates from tongue movement and is trans

OBJECTIVE(S): Head and neck cancer-related lymphedema (HNCRL) is a common, chronic consequence of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment that contributes to progressive fibrosis, functional impairment, and reduced quality of life. Although early intervention is advocated, its association with longitudinal swallow outcomes remains poorly understood. This study evaluated whether early HNCRL treatment was associated with improved objective and patient-reported swallowing outcomes following radiation treatment (RT) and/or chemoradiation (CRT).
METHODS: Medical records from 110 patients enrolled in

BACKGROUND: Preterm and sick neonates are at increased risk for swallowing and feeding problems. In Germany, structural standards for speech-language pathology (SLP) services in neonatal care are lacking, as are validated assessment tools for this context. The aim of this study was to systematically describe feeding problems using clinically feasible instruments.
METHODS: In a prospective observational study, a SLP service was implemented in neonatal units at a German university hospital. Data were analyzed from infants referred due to feeding difficulties. Nutritional status was assessed usi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Modest improvements in survival following oral cavity cancer have increased the population of long-term survivors, shifting attention toward speech and swallowing outcomes. However, functional outcome measurement remains heterogeneous and inconsistently reported, limiting comparability across studies and translation to clinical decision-making. This review evaluates current speech and swallowing outcome measures used in oral cavity cancer, with particular attention to glossectomy populations, and proposes a pragmatic framework for standardized, multidimensional assessment.

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite (AOB) affects 16.5% of children aged 2-16 years, significantly impacting dental occlusion and oral function. Among various contributing factors, improper tongue posture has been implicated. This study aims to assess neuronal cortical activation differences in children with AOB compared to those without, focusing on rest, speech and swallowing disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of articulation disorders, swallowing occurrences, tongue rate of motion ratio, and brain activation patterns at rest and during deglutition and phonation in children with and

BACKGROUND: Awake procedures such as aerodigestive endoscopies can be distressing. As a result, definitive diagnostic assessments often require sedation or general anaesthesia, limiting ability to identify early-stage cancers.
OBJECTIVE: To create a process and a team to deliver mindful endoscopy, in order to support patients through awake procedures, thereby extending the scope of definitive assessments in outpatient settings.
METHODS: The mindful endoscopy team, consisting of an endoscopist and endoscopy support practitioners (ESPs) was created. Nurse-led mindfulness comprised patient educ

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative dysphagia significantly affects the quality of life of patients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer. We aimed to objectively analyze swallowing function in these patients using quantitative biomechanical indices from Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) as well as to identify independent predictors of key swallowing outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 60 patients with postoperative oral and oropharyngeal cancers. VFSS were performed at 3 months (for patients without adjuvant therapy) or 6-7 months (for patients with adjuvant therapy) to assess swallo

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Esophageal achalasia (EA) is a rare motility disorder. Symptoms often impair quality of life (QoL) and lead to restrictive, self-managed diets with potential nutritional deficiencies. The study aimed to assess dietary patterns and nutritional status in EA patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: EA patients, retrospectively recruited from January 2018 to August 2024, filled out a 15-day diary to record ingested food and relative symptoms onset for each meal. Estimated caloric intake and macronutrient composition were compared to those recommended by the Italian Society of Human

PURPOSE: Patients with Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) often suffer from oropharyngeal dysphagia that can go undiagnosed for years. Diagnosis of ZD typically requires specialized centers and videofluoroscopy. Our study aims to create a noninvasive, accessible, sound-based screening tool for healthcare professionals to reduce diagnostic barriers and enable earlier detection of ZD.
METHODS: We developed a two-stage deep learning model to detect ZD using cervical auscultation sounds. The first stage identifies swallowing sounds (idle vs. swallow), and the second classifies detected swallows as health…

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a complex condition common in critical care settings, often resulting from multifactorial causes such as trauma, neuromuscular weakness, impaired cognition, intubation and the presence of a tracheostomy. Dysphagia can have serious consequences, including aspiration pneumonia and prolonged hospital stays, which need to be avoided in resource-constrained environments such as South Africa (SA).
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the characteristics of dysphagia in critically ill patients using an interdisciplinary assessment approach that utilises both bedside evaluations and fi
