BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment has been linked to multiple negative health outcomes and many leading causes of death. Statewide population-based evaluations are needed to identify high-risk populations early in life for targeted interventions.
PURPOSE: To assess the utility of combining Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) data with child protective services (CPS) records to identify risk factors associated with Protective Services Reports (PSR) suggestive of child maltreatment.
METHODS: This was a retrospective population-based cohort study conducted in the spring of 2010 usi

Assessment drives learning. However, when it comes to high-stakes examinations (e.g., for licensure or certification), these assessments of learning may be seen as unnecessary hurdles by some. Licensing clinical skills assessment in particular have come under fire over the years. Recently, assessments such as the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part II, a clinical skills objective structured clinical examination, have been permanently cancelled. The authors explore potential consequences of this cancellation including those that are inadvertent and undesirable. Future next ste…

In providing palliative care and hospice in a veterinary outpatient primary care setting it is important to manage all aspects of the patient's needs as well as the primary disease process, and to understand that veterinary palliative care and hospice do not require a special degree or board certification. They only require compassion for the terminally ill patient and the human family members, a commitment to keeping patients united with their families for as long as they are comfortable, and a willingness to keep a comprehensive perspective on the patient's changing needs as death nears.

A potentially serious medical condition was identified by evaluation of an apparently benign elevation in red blood cell count. Although most cases of polycythemia are benign, a thorough evaluation of the cause and manifestations of the disorder is recommended before issuing a medical certificate to any airman with polycythemia.

The One Health concept focuses on the interconnections between human health, animal health, and the environment, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaborations to address complex issues such as the health challenges posed by climate change and global pandemics. One Health is a central part of the curriculum of veterinary schools, however, it is rarely incorporated into medical school education. Nationally, there are limited examples of formal One Health education and training for medical students. To incorporate One Health into its curriculum, John A. Burns School of Medicine develope

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have strongly diminished in the HAART era, but their impact on life expectancy of people with AIDS (PWA) needs to be monitored. We aimed at quantifying the burden of KS and NHL on mortality of PWA in the HAART period in Italy.
METHODS: Death certificates of 3209 PWA diagnosed in 1999-2006 who died as of December 2006 were reviewed to identify those deaths in which KS or NHL was the underlying cause. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were computed.
RESULTS: KS or NHL appeared in 4.3% and 14.6% death certificates, respectively; t
