BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While changes in ventricular and extraventricular CSF spaces have been studied following shunt placement in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus, regional changes in cortical volumes have not. These changes are important to better inform disease pathophysiology and evaluation for copathology. The purpose of this work is to investigate changes in ventricular and cortical volumes in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus following ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patient

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a disease that comes with a great impact on the patient's life. The only treatment for iNPH, which is a progressive disease, is shunt surgery. It is previously indicated that early intervention might be of importance for the outcome.
AIM: To investigate if a longer waiting time for surgery, negatively influences the clinical outcome.
METHODS: Eligible for this study were all iNPH patients (n = 3007) registered in the Swedish Hydrocephalus Quality Registry (SHQR) during 1st of January 2004-12th of June 2019. Waiting time, define

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine the association between connectivity changes in the default mode network (DMN) and the progression of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH).
METHODS: We retrospectively recruited cases of preclinical and clinical iNPH from 2,196 patients who had received whole-body 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) scanning. We included 31 cases with asymptomatic ventriculomegaly with features of iNPH on MRI (AVIM; reported as preclinical iNPH) and 12 with iNPH. We performed a voxel-based analysis of the brain FDG-P

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiological basis of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is still unclear. Previous studies have shown a familial aggregation and a potential heritability when it comes to iNPH. Our aim was to conduct a novel case-controlled comparison between familial iNPH (fNPH) patients and their elderly relatives, involving multiple different families.
METHODS: Questionnaires and phone interviews were used for collecting the data and categorising the iNPH patients into the familial (fNPH) and the sporadic groups. Identical questionnaires were sent to the relatives of the

AIM: Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is highly prevalent in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), and the presence of AD pathology may involve regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). In this study, we examined the relationship between rCBF and AD-related biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid of iNPH patients.
METHODS: Patients with iNPH (n = 39) were classified into groups with (iNPH/AD+) (n=15) and without (iNPH/AD-) (n=24) high biomarker probability of AD (i.e. combined low amyloid β 42 and high total tau in the cerebrospinal fluid). rCBF was quantified in 17 region

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers have been extensively investigated in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) with the aim of a better differential diagnosis, but the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying CSF biomarker changes and the relationship between biomarker levels and clinical variables are still a matter of debate. We evaluated CSF amyloid-β (Aβ)42 and Aβ40, total (t)-tau, phosphorylated (p)-tau, total prion protein (t-PrP), and neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) in healthy controls (n = 50) and subjects with iNPH (n = 71), Alzheimer's disease (AD) (n = 60), and s

BACKGROUND: A few previous studies have reported a change in gait motion in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients after shunt surgery compared with before shunt surgery; however, there has been no detailed quantitative investigation of gait, including kinetic and kinematic parameters. Furthermore, the relationship between gait parameters and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has not been confirmed.
RESEARCH QUESTION: We investigated the gait motion in patients with iNPH, and evaluated the relationship between kinetic gait parameters and MR imaging before and after shunt surge

OBJECTIVE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is not simply the result of a disturbance in CSF circulation, but often includes cardiovascular comorbidity and abnormalities within the cerebral mantle. In this study, the authors have examined the relationship between the global autoregulation pressure reactivity index (PRx), the profile of disturbed CSF circulation and pressure-volume compensation, and their possible effects on outcome after surgery.
METHODS: The authors studied a cohort of 131 patients in whom a clinical suspicion of normal pressure hydrocephalus was investigated. Parameters descri

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a neuropathology with unknown cause characterised by gait impairment, cognitive decline and ventriculomegaly. These patients often present comorbidity with Alzheimer's disease (AD), including AD pathological hallmarks such as amyloid plaques mainly consisting of amyloid β-peptide and neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Even though some of the molecular mechanisms behind AD are well described, little is known about iNPH. Several studies have reported that mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contact sites (MERCS

BACKGROUND: The 3-meter Timed Up and Go test (TUG) is a reliable quantitative test for assessment of gait and balance. We aimed to establish an optimal threshold of TUG at the tap test for predicting outcomes 12 months after shunt surgery in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH).
METHODS: The TUG was measured in a total of 151 patients with possible iNPH before and after a tap test and 12 months after shunt surgery. Among them, 81 patients underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt implantation (SINPHONI) and 70 underwent lumboperitoneal shunt implantation (SINPHONI-2). The

Subdural fluid collections (SFC) are characteristic complications of shunting for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). This report presents two shunted iNPH patients with clinically silent postoperative SFC, detected after abnormal neuropsychological findings. These cases highlight the value of neuropsychological assessment in the routine postoperative assessment of iNPH.

The morphological features of disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus (DESH), the core type of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus, can not be explained by the classical theory of CSF absorption at the arachnoid villi and the hypothesis of CSF flow blocking at the convexity subarachnoid spaces. By using MRI Time-SLIP CSF flow imaging, we demonstrated that CSF freely move in the subarachnoid spaces below and in the Sylvian fissures. CSF does not move in the convexity subarachnoid spaces in healthy individuals and patients with DESH, indicating the presence of flow obst

Using magnetic resonance-diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we examined white matter changes within the brains of patients diagnosed with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH). We analyzed data for 24 INPH patients who were presented with typical clinical symptoms (gait disturbance, dementia, and/or urinary incontinence) and Evans index > 0.3, and compared these with the control data from 21 elderly persons (≥ 60 years). DTI brain images were obtained with a 3T scanner. Fractional anisotropy (FA) brain maps were generated using a computer-automated method, and tract-based spatial statis
