Icaritin: A Novel Natural Candidate for Hematological Malignancies Therapy.

Hematological malignancies including leukemia and lymphoma can severely impact human health. With the current therapies combined with chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, the prognosis of hematologic malignancies improved significantly. However, most hematological malignancies are still incurable. Therefore, research for novel treatment options was continuing with the natural product as one source. Icaritin is a compound extracted from a traditional Chinese herb, Epimedium Genus, and demonstrated an antitumor effect in various neoplasms including hematologi

Multiple primary tumors: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Multiple primary tumors, especially quadruple primary neoplasms is extremely rare. Fibrous dysplasia (FD), osteosarcoma (OS), and giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) are three bone tumors with low incidence while primary pulmonary meningioma is a rare disease. In this case report, we present a unique synchronous occurrence of these four separate pathological conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male previously underwent resection of OS of fifth rib and FD of eighth rib 1 year ago. Recently, a discontinuous pain at right knee developed. Serial X-ray films showed a progressively

Survival of second and multiple primary tumors in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma in the betel quid chewing area.

We report the incidence, risk factor(s), and overall survival (OS) of second/multiple primary tumors (SPTs/MPTs) in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients in betel quid chewing areas. Of 816 untreated OSCC patients who had radical surgery, 15.7% had either synchronous or metachronous SPTs. The SPTs (70.3%) were at the oral cavity. SPTs (18.8%) developed third primary tumors, with a significantly higher incidence in synchromous than metachronous SPTs (p=0.001). An optimal, but significantly lower, 5-year OS was observed in patients with SPTs/MPTs than without (54.0% vs. 67.2%, p=0.

Patterns of surgery in patients belonging to amsterdam-positive families.

INTRODUCTION: The phenotype of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer includes an 80 percent lifetime risk of colorectal cancer, a predominance of lesions proximal to the splenic flexure, and a high incidence of synchronous and metachronous neoplasia. Although prophylactic colectomy is rarely advised for patients with a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer genotype and a normal colon, the presence of advanced neoplasia in the context of a qualifying family history or a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer genotype has led to such recommendations. We performed this study to documen

Risk factors and age-incidence relationships for contralateral breast cancer.

The nation-wide Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze the risk of contralateral breast cancer among 72,092 women with unilateral breast cancer. Contralateral breast cancer, defined as being diagnosed 6 months or more after the first breast cancer, affected 2,529 women (3.5%). In a young age group the incidence of contralateral breast cancer was 50 times higher than the incidence of first breast cancer; for all contralateral breast cancer the difference was 5-fold. Because only 1 breast was at risk for contralateral breast cancer, the true differences to unilateral cancer were 2 ti

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of bilateral breast cancer in an Australian cohort.

PURPOSE: Uncertainty remains about the impact of bilateral breast cancer. Characteristics and outcomes of unilateral and bilateral breast cancer were compared within an Australian multi-institutional cohort. METHODS: Demographic, tumour and treatment characteristics were compared among unilateral (n = 2336) and bilateral cases (52 synchronous, 35 metachronous) using descriptive analyses. Disease-specific outcomes were investigated using Cox regression modelling to adjust for prognostic and treatment factors. RESULTS: Factors associated with increased risk of bilateral breast cancer included

Multiple primary melanomas: analysis of 49 cases.

Development of multiple primary melanomas is a rare but well recognized disease, with an estimated incidence ranging from 1.75% to 8.5% in several series. The clinical, histological and epidemiological characteristics of 49 patients, identified from 2470 with histologically confirmed melanoma, are described in this study. Thirty-five of these patients had two primary melanomas, 11 had three melanomas and three had four, five and six melanomas, respectively. Diagnosis was concurrent in 22 patients (45%); in the remaining cases the median time interval between the first and second melanoma was 2

Progress report on multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a germline pathogenic variant in the MEN1 tumor suppressor gene. Patients with MEN1 have a high risk for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with a penetrance of nearly 100%, pituitary adenomas (PitAd) in 40% of patients, and neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) of the pancreas (40% of patients), duodenum, lung, and thymus. Increased MEN1-related mortality is mainly related to duodenal-pancreatic and thymic NEN. Management of PHPT differs from that of patients with sporadic disease, as the surgical approac

Solitary plasmacytoma of the sternum.

Plasmacytoma is a plasma cell neoplasm that locally infiltrates a bone or spreads to extramedullary areas. A new World Health Organization criterion defines solitary plasmacytoma of bone as a localized bone tumor consisting of plasma cells identical to those seen in plasma cell myeloma, which is manifested as a solitary osteolytic lesion in a radiological evaluation. Primary tumors of the sternum are generally malignant, and solitary plasmacytomas of the sternum are very rare tumors. We present herein the case of a patient who had a primary sternal tumor with solitary plasmacytoma and no evide

Postsplenectomy sclerosing extramedullary hematopoietic tumor with unexpected good clinical evolution: morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis of one case and review of the literature.

Sclerosing extramedullary hematopoietic tumor has been described as a rare manifestation of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm. The lack of knowledge about this entity has caused it to be mistaken for many types of nonhematopoietic and hematopoietic tumors. We present the case of a 71-year-old lady with a long history of primary myelofibrosis, which developed multiple abdominal sclerosing extramedullary hematopoietic tumors with good clinical evolution. Nonchronic myeloid leukemia myeloproliferative neoplasm included a JAK2 mutation as part of the diagnosis algorithm. Particularly, idiopathic

Cystic meningioma: unusual imaging appearance of a common intracranial tumor.

Meningiomas are common tumors of the central nervous system that account for approximately 15% of all intracranial tumors and are the most common extra-axial neoplasm. Most meningiomas are benign, although atypical and malignant meningiomas also exist. Typical imaging characteristics include a well-circumscribed, homogeneously enhancing, extra-axial mass on both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The presence of an associated cyst is an uncommon imaging feature that may make it difficult to distinguish the tumor from a primary intra-axial glial neoplasm. The presence of peritu

Synchronous Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Wilms Tumor: Report of a Case and Review of Previous Cases.

BACKGROUND: Multiple primary cancers are rare in pediatric patients and are mostly metachronous. Synchronous primary malignancies are exceedingly rare and pose significant challenges. OBSERVATION: This case report and review of previous cases focus on synchronous acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and Wilms tumor (WT). A systematic literature search identified 3 previous cases, confirming synchronous ALL and WT as a rare occurrence. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous primary cancers are rare and pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Synchronous cancer warrants comprehensive genetic t

[Synchronous medullary and mucinous tumor in the right colon: case report].

Colon cancer according to the World Health Organization is classified histologically as: adenocarcinoma in 95%, mucinous adenocarcinoma 3.9-19%, signet ring cell carcinoma 1-2%, small cell carcinoma less than 1%, medullary carcinoma in less than 1%, undifferentiated carcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma 1-2%. Medullary and mucinous carcinoma usually occur in the right colon predominantly in females and are associated with microsatellite instability. The incidence of synchronous colorectal tumors varies between 1.3 and 7.3%, 43% of them are located proximal to the main lesion and one third are

Case Report: Synchronous primary location of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and adenocarcinoma of the colon: an unusual occurrence.

BACKGROUND: We have little knowledge about the synchronous occurrence of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and other types of histologic tumors. This association is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of synchronous stromal tumor and adenocarcinoma of the left side colonic localization. Immunohistochemistry identified c-Kit expression. The discovery of colonic adenocarcinoma was on operative specimen after histologic examination. The patient underwent left oncologic colectomy with stoma. Follow-up at one year postoperatively did not detect tumor recurrence. DISCUSSION: Cli

Double pituitary adenoma associated with acromegaly and hyperprolactinemia: a case report.

Doubleor multiple adenomas are rare, and synchronous secretory pituitary adenomas are rarer still. We report a case of a 30-year-old woman with a 6-year history of amenorrhea and occasional galactorrhoea. She presented with headaches, weight gain, subtle acromegalic features, new-onset hypertension and diabetes. Workup confirmed acromegaly and hyperprolactinemia. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging of the pituitary demonstrated two noncontiguous microadenomas. Two distinct tumors were resected through a transsphenoidal approach. Immunohistochemical analysis of each separated adenoma confir

Mature cystic teratoma with co-existent mucinous cystadenocarcinoma: describing a diagnostic challenge-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratoma co-existing with a mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is a rare tumor that few cases have been reported until now. In these cases, either a benign teratoma is malignantly transformed into adenocarcinoma or a collision tumor is formed between a mature cystic teratoma and a mucinous tumor, which is either primarily originated from epithelial-stromal surface of the ovary, or secondary to a primary gastrointestinal tract tumor. The significance of individualizing the two tumors has a remarkable effect on further therapeutic management. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case,

Elevated Mutational Age in Blood of Children Treated for Cancer Contributes to Therapy-Related Myeloid Neoplasms.

UNLABELLED: Childhood cancer survivors are confronted with various chronic health conditions like therapy-related malignancies. However, it is unclear how exposure to chemotherapy contributes to the mutation burden and clonal composition of healthy tissues early in life. Here, we studied mutation accumulation in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) before and after cancer treatment of 24 children. Of these children, 19 developed therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN). Posttreatment HSPCs had an average mutation burden increase comparable to what treatment-naïve cells accumulate dur

A case report of synchronous bilateral tonsillar carcinoma associated with human papilloma virus.

The case of a 69-year-old man with bilateral synchronous tonsillar carcinoma is reported. The patient complained of nasal closure, strange voice, and discomfort in his pharynx when he was admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Wakayama Medical University, Wakayama, Japan, in March 2017. The palatine tonsils were enlarged and the surface was irregular. Left cervical lymphadenopathy was also evident. Histological examination from both tonsils was performed and bilateral tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed. PCR analysis showed the same HPV-DNA pattern fr

Carcinoma Showing Thymus-like Differentiation (CASTLE) with Synchronous Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare malignant tumor that accounts for 0.1%-0.15% of all thyroid cancers. More than half of the patients have tumor extension to adjacent organs, including the recurrent laryngeal nerve, trachea, and esophagus. The diagnosis of CASTLE is based on histology and immunohistochemistry. A 58-year-old female patient complained of hoarseness for one and half years. Right side vocal cord palsy was diagnosed by fiberscopy. Thyroid sonography revealed right thyroid tumors, which were reported to be papillary thyroid carcinoma through FNAC. Tota
