Inhibitory control explains locomotor statistics in walking Drosophila.

In order to forage for food, many animals regulate not only specific limb movements but the statistics of locomotor behavior, switching between long-range dispersal and local search depending on resource availability. How premotor circuits regulate locomotor statistics is not clear. Here, we analyze and model locomotor statistics and their modulation by attractive food odor in walking Drosophila. Food odor evokes three motor regimes in flies: baseline walking, upwind running during odor, and search behavior following odor loss. During search, we find that flies adopt higher angular velocities

Evaluation of an artificial intelligence system for bull sperm morphology evaluation.

The morphological characteristics of bull spermatozoa are usually evaluated visually using bright-field microscopy according to the guidelines proposed by the Society for Theriogenology (SFT) for the Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BBSE). However, analysis is labor consuming and requires experienced personnel to obtain reliable results. Nevertheless, the artificial insemination industry increasingly demands the implementation of genomic selection schemes for young bulls. Hence, there is a growing need for a more standardized technique to analyze semen quality, particularly for the evaluati

Network effects of traumatic brain injury: from infra slow to high frequency oscillations and seizures.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have a multitude of effects on neural functioning. In extreme cases, TBI can lead to seizures both immediately following the injury as well as persistent epilepsy over years to a lifetime. However, mechanisms of neural dysfunctioning after TBI remain poorly understood. To address these questions, we analyzed human and animal data and we developed a biophysical network model implementing effects of ion concentration dynamics and homeostatic synaptic plasticity to test effects of TBI on the brain network dynamics. We focus on three primary phenomena that have bee

Effects of psychedelic microdosing on cognitive functions: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Microdosing - the practice of consuming extremely low doses of classical psychedelic substances that do not elicit overt psychedelic effects - has gained significant attention as a potential method for enhancing cognitive performance. However, findings from controlled studies remain mixed and inconclusive. This preregistered meta-analysis examined the cognitive effects of classical psychedelic microdosing in 14 different studies (N = 1614), analyzing 59 effect sizes across multiple cognitive domains, spanning both acute (on-drug) and post-acute (off-drug) assessments. Results show a significan

Estimating global phase synchronization by quantifying multivariate mutual information and detecting network structure.

In neuroscience, phase synchronization (PS) is a crucial mechanism that facilitates information processing and transmission between different brain regions. Specifically, global phase synchronization (GPS) characterizes the degree of PS among multivariate neural signals. In recent years, several GPS methods have been proposed. However, they primarily focus on the collective synchronization behavior of multivariate neural signals, while neglecting the structural difference between oscillator networks. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a method named total correlation-based synchronization

Sex differences in body temperature and neural power spectra in response to repeated restraint stress.

Repeated stress is associated with an increased risk of developing psychiatric illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is more common in women, yet the neurobiology behind this sex difference is unknown. Habituation to repeated stress is impaired in PTSD, and recent preclinical studies have shown that female rats do not habituate as fully as male rats to repeated stress, which leads to impairments in cognition and sleep. Further research should examine sex differences after repeated stress in other relevant measures, such as body temperature and neural activity. In this

Fluorescein Angiography for Monitoring Neural Blood Flow in Chronic Nerve Compression Neuropathy: Experimental Animal Models and Preliminary Clinical Observations.

Pathologies associated with neural blood disturbance have been reported in patients with chronic nerve compression (CNC) neuropathy. Fluorescein angiography (FAG) and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) are effective for real-time peripheral nerve blood flow assessment. However, their reliability in severe neuropathy models in large animals or clinical conditions remains unclear. Initially, we aim to apply FAG to two different CNC animal models and evaluate their characteristics in comparison with those of LDF. In FAG, we quantified the peak luminance at the compression site following fluorescein in

A deep neural network prediction method for diabetes based on Kendall's correlation coefficient and attention mechanism.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which is characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels. It may affect various organs and tissues, and even lead to life-threatening complications. Accurate prediction of diabetes can significantly reduce its incidence. However, the current prediction methods struggle to accurately capture the essential characteristics of nonlinear data, and the black-box nature of these methods hampers its clinical application. To address these challenges, we propose KCCAM_DNN, a diabetes prediction method that integrates Kendall's correlation coefficient and an attention m
