OBJECTIVES: The remodeling of the dilatated valve annulus with a prosthetic ring for the repair of valve insufficiency is a well-established concept in mitral valve surgery, and may also be suitable for aortic valve reconstruction. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) has recently been considered a promising marker of stress responses. In this study, to evaluate IL-18 as a noninvasive stress marker in pigs, we investigated the expression of IL-18 in porcine salivary glands and its presence in saliva, and its dynamics during acute immobilization stress in pigs. We report a streptozotocin-induced diabetic cynomolgus monkey that developed acute gastric dilatation within the first week after intraportal porcine islet transplantation. The monkey presented with increasing anorexia and somnolence, associated with persistent metabolic acidosis. On physical examination, a diffuse mass was palpable in the abdomen.
