Illness perceptions in patients receiving rheumatology rehabilitation: association with health and outcomes at 12 months.

BACKGROUND: Illness perceptions have been found to change over time and following health care. Hence, addressing illness perceptions alongside existing health care interventions may be important for the sustainment of health gains following rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to measure the illness perceptions of patients receiving inpatient rheumatology rehabilitation and assess the association with aspects of health and outcomes at baseline, discharge and 12 months. METHODS: Patients with a rehabilitation stay of one week or more at three institutions in Norway in 2009 were invited to

Maternal emotion socialization and emotional functioning among Black adolescents: the role of perceptions of mother as a secure base.

Black youth face racial inequities in their communities that translate to more severe consequences for their displays of negative emotions than their White counterparts. Researchers propose that a balanced approach to emotion socialization, combining emotional support and suppression of youth's displays of negative emotions, engenders Black teens' confidence in their caregivers' availability to provide comfort, connection, and protection in times of need (i.e., perceptions of mother as a secure base). We examined associations among mothers' responses to Black teens' distress, teens' perception

The influence of pandemic-related workplace safety practices on frontline service employee wellbeing outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerability of frontline employee (FLEs) to infections and other hazards and highlighted the importance of workplace safety practices (WSP) for service organizations. In response to the critical issue of service safety, we developed and empirically tested a model proposing that WSPs negatively influence FLE perceptions of pandemic related threats and positively influence their perceptions of organizational supportiveness (POS). In turn, these perceptions have time-lagged effects on two aspects of FLE wellbeing-reduced emotional exhaustion and increased w

Endurance Performance is Influenced by Perceptions of Pain and Temperature: Theory, Applications and Safety Considerations.

Models of endurance performance now recognise input from the brain, including an athlete's ability to cope with various non-pleasurable perceptions during exercise, such as pain and temperature. Exercise training can reduce perceptions of both pain and temperature over time, partly explaining why athletes generally have a higher pain tolerance, despite a similar pain threshold, compared with active controls. Several strategies with varying efficacy may ameliorate the perceptions of pain (e.g. acetaminophen, transcranial direct current stimulation and transcutaneous electrical stimulation) and

Brain morphological changes and associated functional connectivity and lag structures in women with primary dysmenorrhea during the pain-free periovulatory phase.

Primary dysmenorrhea(PDM) is defined as painful menstrual cramps without any evident pathology, exhibiting central nervous system(CNS) sensitivity and functional and structural changes in brain regions responsible for pain perception and modulation. Previous imaging studies primarily focused on functional changes, with only a limited number of studies investigated changes in brain morphology, and these studies generally used small sample sizes. It remains largely unknown whether brain structural changes are coupled with functional changes in patients with PDM, as well as the association betwee

Suggested deafness during hypnosis and simulation of hypnosis compared to a distraction and control condition: A study on subjective experience and cortical brain responses.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to affect the processing and perception of stimuli. Here, we investigated the effects of hypnosis on the processing of auditory stimuli, the time course of event-related-potentials (ERP; N1 and P3b amplitudes) and the activity of cortical sources of the P3b component. Forty-eight participants completed an auditory oddball paradigm composed of standard, distractor, and target stimuli during a hypnosis (HYP), a simulation of hypnosis (SIM), a distraction (DIS), and a control (CON) condition. During HYP, participants were suggested that an earplug would obstruct the pe

Time and Alcohol Do Not Change Everything: How Intoxicated Witnesses Perceive Aggression in Intimate Partner Violence.

Although alcohol-intoxicated witnesses to violent crimes are common, research on how alcohol affects witnesses' perception of aggression is sparse. In the present study, it was investigated whether different levels of intoxication altered how severe witnesses perceived aggression displayed by involved parties in an intimate partner violence (IPV) scenario to be. An experimental mixed-groups design 3 (sober vs. moderate vs. high breath alcohol concentration [BAC]) x 2 (immediate vs. one week delayed interview) was used. Socially drinking men and women (n = 137; 67 and 70, respectively) were ran

Sampling and evaluation of specific absorption rates during patient examinations performed on 1.5-Tesla MR systems.

It was the purpose of present study, to evaluate a large number of exposure-time courses measured during patient examinations in clinical routine in relation to the current IEC standard and the draft version of the revised standard and, moreover, to investigate whether there is a correlation between the subjective heat perception of the patients during the MR examination and the intensity of RF power deposition. To this end, radiofrequency exposure to 591 patients undergoing MR examinations performed on 1.5-Tesla MR systems was monitored in five clinics and evaluated in accordance with both IE

The Relationship Between Policy, Media, and Perceptions of Sexual Offenders Between 2007 and 2017: A Review of the Literature.

Sexual violence is a prominent social problem that harms many victims every year. Perpetrators of these crimes tend to exist in a binary. Some are convicted by the criminal justice system, where they face sanctions such as jail time and registration and are demonized by society. Others never face any sanctions for harm caused and are exonerated for their actions. This review examines public perceptions of sexual offenders in the United States through the institutional-level constructs of federal policy, media, and institutional myths. A review of the literature on this topic from 2007 to 2017

Making memories: the development of long-term visual knowledge in children with visual agnosia.

There are few reports about the effects of perinatal acquired brain lesions on the development of visual perception. These studies demonstrate nonseverely impaired visual-spatial abilities and preserved visual memory. Longitudinal data analyzing the effects of compromised perceptions on long-term visual knowledge in agnosics are limited to lesions having occurred in adulthood. The study of children with focal lesions of the visual pathways provides a unique opportunity to assess the development of visual memory when perceptual input is degraded. We assessed visual recognition and visual memory

Hand dominance in the performance and perceptions of virtual reach control.

PURPOSE: Efforts to optimize human-computer interactions are becoming increasingly prevalent, especially with virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation paradigms that utilize engaging interfaces. We hypothesized that motor and perceptional behaviors within a virtual environment are modulated uniquely through different modes of control of a hand avatar depending on limb dominance. This study investigated the effects of limb dominance on performance and concurrent changes in perceptions, such as time-based measures for intentional binding, during virtual reach-to-grasp. METHODS: Participants (n = 16,

Attempts at the practical on-road driving test and the hazard perception test and the risk of traffic crashes in young drivers.

OBJECTIVE: This study separately examined the impact of the outcomes of a practical on-road driving test and a hazard perception test on the likelihood of traffic crashes among a cohort of newly licensed young drivers in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. METHODS: The DRIVE study is a prospective cohort study of drivers aged 17 to 24 years holding their first-year provisional driver license in NSW. Information obtained from 20,822 participants in a detailed baseline questionnaire was linked to information on the number of attempts at a mandatory practical on-road driving test and hazard percep

Simon says "stay in touch": Reachability moderates the effect of irrelevant spatial congruence.

The Simon Effect refers to the finding that simple left-right manual responses tend to be faster and more accurate when the response and stimulus are on the same side (congruent) compared to when they are on opposite sides (incongruent) even though the response is determined by a non-spatial attribute (e.g., color). We compared the Simon Effect with stimuli at reachable and unreachable distances within a virtual reality environment to test its dependence on the potential to interact with the stimulus. We controlled for confounds by matching image size and the viewing angle of stimuli within th

Shape-similarity gain: A selection profile for simple objects.

Recent research has examined the selection profile-the pattern of enhancement and suppression of stimuli when allocating attention to a specific feature value. Support for several different selection profiles for simple feature dimensions (e.g., color, orientation) have been identified such as the feature-similarity gain and surround suppression effects. However, it is unclear whether the selection profile for more complex stimuli follows a similar pattern. Using a recently developed circular shape space, the current study assessed the selection profile for these simple shapes as an initial st

The influence of pitcher handedness on pitch-calling behavior: Insights from fMRI study on baseball umpires.

This functional magnetic resonance imaging study delves into the impact of experience and pitcher handedness on the pitch-calling behavior of baseball umpires. Expert and intermediate umpires were asked to make ball/strike calls on videotaped pitches of left- and right-handed pitchers and rate their certainty for the call while undergoing scanning. Behavioral results replicated previous findings that expert umpires were more certain but not more accurate or quicker than intermediate umpires, suggesting that, as sports officials, umpires may learn to project confidence to maintain control of th

The effects of pre-cue alpha and cueing strategy on age-related deficits in post-cue alpha activity and target processing during visual spatial attention.

Electroencephalography alpha-band (8-13 Hz) activity during visual spatial attention declines in normal aging. We recently reported the impacts of pre-cue baseline alpha and cueing strategy on post-cue anticipatory alpha activity and target processing in visual spatial attention (Wang et al., Cerebral Cortex, 2023). However, whether these factors affected aging effects remains unaddressed. We investigated this issue in two independent experiments (n = 114) with different cueing strategies (instructional vs. probabilistic). When median-splitting young adults (YA) by their pre-cue alpha power, w

Salience by competitive and recurrent interactions: Bridging neural spiking and computation in visual attention.

Decisions about where to move the eyes depend on neurons in frontal eye field (FEF). Movement neurons in FEF accumulate salience evidence derived from FEF visual neurons to select the location of a saccade target among distractors. How visual neurons achieve this salience representation is unknown. We present a neuro-computational model of target selection called salience by competitive and recurrent interactions (SCRI), based on the competitive interaction model of attentional selection and decision-making (Smith & Sewell, 2013). SCRI selects targets by synthesizing localization and identific

Investigating visuo-spatial neglect and visual extinction during intracranial electrical stimulations: The role of the right inferior parietal cortex.

Both visuo-spatial neglect and visual extinction may occur following right-brain damage. So far, studies on brain-damaged patients have not provided definite evidence about which lesion patterns may lead to the association or dissociation of these deficits. This study was set out to address this issue using Intracranial Electrical Stimulation (IES) in a group of nine patients affected by refractory epilepsy. Cerebral regions associated with visuo-spatial neglect and visual extinction were stimulated, including the right frontal, temporal, and posterior parietal areas. During IES, patients with

Changes in visual cortical processing attenuate singleton distraction during visual search.

The ability to suppress distractions is essential to successful completion of goal-directed behaviors. Several behavioral studies have recently provided strong evidence that learned suppression may be particularly efficient in reducing distractor interference. Expectations about a distractor's repeated location, color, or even presence are rapidly learned and used to attenuate interference. In this study, we use a visual search paradigm in which a color singleton, which is known to capture attention, occurs within blocks with high or low frequency. The behavioral results show reduced singleton
