Ex vivo assessment of irrigant penetration and renewal during the final irrigation regimen.

AIM: To assess irrigant penetration in curved canals after shaping procedures ex vivo. METHODOLOGY: Thirty extracted mandibular molars with moderate to severe root canal curvature were included. A special aiming device was used to guarantee that each successive radiograph was taken with the same positioning. The mesiolingual canal of each tooth was instrumented with ProTaper rotary files. Apical third preparation was completed with an F1 instrument before additional step-back enlargement using F2 then F3 instruments. For each apical taper, the teeth were submitted successively to active irrig

Preliminary report of immediately loaded Altiva Natural Tooth Replacement dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Osseointegration may be described as a direct contact between living bone and an alloplastic implant. It is thought that a period of undisturbed healing is required to ensure osseointegration. The length of the healing period is dependent on a number of factors, such as implant material, surface configuration, site preparation technique, bone quality, healing capacity of the osteotomy, and implant design. Elimination of the healing period offers distinct advantages in terms of cost of therapy and convenience to patients. Recently, a new one-piece implant design was proposed that pr

Localization of EMSP1 expression during tooth formation and cloning of mouse cDNA.

Enamel matrix serine proteinase 1 (EMSP1) is a proteolytic enzyme that has been isolated from the developing enamel of pig teeth. Its apparent function is to degrade the organic matrix in preparation for enamel maturation. The expression of EMSP1 has never been investigated in another organism besides the pig, and EMSP1 expression in the enamel organ has never been specifically demonstrated in ameloblasts. Here we report the expression of recombinant pig EMSP 1 (rpEMSP 1), the generation of rabbit polyclonal antibodies against rpEMSP1, the characterization of the antibodies and EMSP1 expressio

Recent development in endodontic research.

In essence, endodontics as a clinical discipline is concerned with the prevention and treatment of pulpal and periapical infection. In recent research the infective process has been investigated as well as the mechanisms by which the pulp and periodontium deal with microbial insults. With regard to the pulp, findings on the hemodynamics of pulpitis suggest that the inflammatory response in this tissue is much less influenced by the special anatomic environment of the tooth than was previously believed. Pulpal diseases are being underdiagnosed, mostly because of inadequate examination methods.

Effects of different platform preparation and retrieval techniques on broken file removal and fracture strength.

The aim was to evaluate the effects of different strategies on broken instrument removal and root fracture strength. After canal preparation of anterior single-rooted teeth, the samples were divided into one control group (n = 10) and six experimental groups (n = 15). A #25/.06 rotary file was broken at a length of 4 mm in the middle-third canal region in the experimental groups, and no instrument fractures were created in the control group. Access to the instrument was achieved with Gates-Glidden (GG) burs or ultrasonic tips. Dentin around the instrument was removed to create partial or full

Controlled-release morphine tablets. A double-blind trial in dental surgery patients.

We report a randomized double-blind comparison of controlled-release morphine tablets (MST-1; 2 x 10 mg) and oral morphine sulphate in solution (20 mg) in 28 patients (20 females) who had undergone removal of impacted lower third molars or a dental clearance under general anaesthetic. The response in both groups was very poor: eight of 15 patients in MST-1 group and six of 13 patients in the standard group required "rescue" analgesics and were withdrawn from the study within the first 2h. No threshold plasma concentration of morphine corresponding to a particular analgesic effect was apparent.

Efficacy of non -thermal pressure plasma versus other modalities for disinfection of primary root canals.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment aims in the preservation of extremely carious primary teeth. For root canal therapy to be successful, root canals must be properly prepared and effectively irrigated .Therefore, it is necessary to select the proper root canal disinfection method to preserve the primary tooth. OBJECTIVE: This research was carried out to compare non-thermal pressure plasma (NTPP), diode laser, propolis, and chlorhexidine (CHX) efficacy for disinfection of deciduous anterior root canals contaminated with Enterococcus Faecalis (E. faecalis) after sterilization by gamma radiation.

Are sugars-free medicines more erosive than sugars-containing medicines? An in vitro study of paediatric medicines with prolonged oral clearance used regularly and long-term by children.

OBJECTIVE: The reduced use of sugars-containing (SC) liquid medicines has increased the use of other dose forms, potentially resulting in more widespread dental effects, including tooth wear. The aim of this study was to assess the erosive potential of 97 paediatric medicines in vitro. METHODS: The study took the form of in vitro measurement of endogenous pH and titratable acidity (mmol). Endogenous pH was measured using a pH meter, followed by titration to pH 7.0 with 0.1-M NaOH. RESULTS: Overall, 55 (57%) formulations had an endogenous pH of < 5.5. The mean (+/- SD) endogenous pH and titra

Root canal configuration of deciduous mandibular first molars--an in vitro study.

Root canal morphology of deciduous mandibular first molar was studied using roentgenographic and decalcification and clearing methods. Two groups of 15 teeth were formed. In the roentgenographic group, roots of the teeth were separated from the crown at the level of CEJ. Cut roots of the teeth were radiographed from both mesiodistal and buccolingual directions using separate IOPA films. In the decalcification and clearing group, teeth were decalcified and made transparent. Dye was injected later. The roots of the teeth were examined under 10 times for number, curvature, types and additional fe

Managing congenitally missing lateral incisors. Part II: tooth-supported restorations.

Three treatment options exist for the replacement of congenitally missing lateral incisors: canine substitution, a tooth-supported restoration, or a single-tooth implant. Selecting the appropriate treatment option depends on the malocclusion, the anterior relationship, specific space requirements, and the condition of the adjacent teeth. The ideal treatment is the most conservative alternative that satisfies individual esthetic and functional requirements. This article closely examines the three options when replacing a missing lateral incisor with a tooth-supported restoration. These options

Improving the Prognosis of Periodontally Involved Teeth at the Time of Extraction of Adjacent Teeth With an Amnion-Chorion Barrier and Bioactive Dentin Graft.

With increased awareness, both in the dental literature and by the general public, of peri-implant disease, a growing trend in dentistry is to save teeth with a "questionable" periodontal prognosis. This prospective study involving such patients was designed to evaluate the effects of combining a bioactive barrier and graft, not on the socket but to augment adjacent periodontal conditions on teeth with severe periodontal bone loss at the time of extraction of an adjacent tooth. Fifteen patients were selected; teeth were extracted, ground, prepared with a pH 11 cleanser, partially demineralized

Characterization of a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel containing an extracellular oxygen carrier (M101) for periodontitis treatment: An in vitro study.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease associated with anaerobic bacteria leading to the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a keystone anaerobic pathogen involved in the development of severe lesions. Periodontal treatment aims to suppress subgingival biofilms and to restore tissue homeostasis. However, hypoxia impairs wound healing and promotes bacterial growth within periodontal pocket. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of local oxygen delivery through the local application of a hydrogel containing Arenicola marina's hemoglobin (M101). To this end
