Transvaginal electrical stimulation with surface-EMG biofeedback in managing stress urinary incontinence in women of premenopausal age: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of conservative treatment of urodynamic stress urinary incontinence (SUI) using transvaginal electrical stimulation with surface-electromyography-assisted biofeedback (TVES + sEMG) in women of premenopausal age. METHODS: One hundred and two patients with SUI were divided into two groups: active (n = 68) and placebo (n = 34) TVES + sEMG. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks and consisted of two sessions per day. Women were evaluated before and after the intervention by pad test, voiding diary, urodynamic test, and the I

Improvement of balance after audio-biofeedback. A 6-week intervention study in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease with no sufficient treatment options to date. The most devastating symptom is the loss of balance with consecutive falls. Based on the observation that postural control improved in patients with vestibular dysfunction after audio-biofeedback training, we tested the effects of this training in PSP patients. Eight PSP patients were included into an uncontrolled 6-week intervention trial. The focus of the training was the improvement of posture and dynamic balance by using audio-biofeedback. The device was well accepted. No adver

[Therapy of primary chronic headache: chronic migraine, chronic tension type headache and other forms of daily chronic headache].

The criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS) define four different primary headache syndromes with daily chronic headaches: chronic migraine, episodic and chronic tension type headache, hemicrania continua, new daily persisting headache. A further important differential diagnosis is medication overuse headache (previously known as analgesia headache). The German, Austrian, and Swiss headache societies now present the first joint guidelines for therapy of these headache syndromes. The current literature was reviewed and a summary is presented. The therapy recommendations do not only

P300-based brain computer interface: reliability and performance in healthy and paralysed participants.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the use of the P300 event-related potential as a control signal in a brain computer interface (BCI) for healthy and paralysed participants. METHODS: The experimental device used the P300 wave to control the movement of an object on a graphical interface. Visual stimuli, consisting of four arrows (up, right, down, left) were randomly presented in peripheral positions on the screen. Participants were instructed to recognize only the arrow indicating a specific direction for an object to move. P300 epochs, synchronized with the stimulus, were analyzed on-l

Neurofeedback training with virtual reality for inattention and impulsiveness.

In this research, the effectiveness of neurofeedback, along with virtual reality (VR), in reducing the level of inattention and impulsiveness was investigated. Twenty-eight male participants, aged 14-18, with social problems, took part in this study. They were separated into three groups: a control group, a VR group, and a non-VR group. The VR and non-VR groups underwent eight sessions of neurofeedback training over 2 weeks, while the control group just waited during the same period. The VR group used a head-mounted display (HMD) and a head tracker, which let them look around the virtual world

Treating patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain.

Studies on the efficacy of available methods of treatment for hemiplegic shoulder pain are reviewed in an attempt to identify the most effective treatment for this problem. Because of the poor quality of the 14 selected studies, no definite conclusion can be drawn about the most effective method of treatment. However, functional electrical stimulation and intra-articular triamcinolone acetonide injections seem to be the most promising treatment options.

Clinical test for Attention Enhancement System.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a childhood syndrome characterized by short attention span, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity, which often leads to learning disabilities and various behavioral problems. The prevalence rates for ADHD varied from a low of 2.0% to a high of 6.3% in 1992 statistics, and it may be higher now. Using Virtual Environments and Neurofeedback, we have developed an Attention Enhancement System for treating ADHD. And we made a clinical test. Classroom-based virtual environments are constructed for intimacy and intensive attention enhancement. In this basi

Importance of colonic transit evaluation in the management of fecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fecal incontinence is common. The potential contribution of colon function to continence has not been studied. Treatment is poorly codified. To evaluate colonic transit time (CTT) and its importance in the management of fecal incontinence we analyzed in a retrospective study the CTT in patients with fecal incontinence, and on this basis in a prospective study used a treatment algorithm taking colonic transit into account. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 30 healthy subjects and 171 patients (110 in the retrospective and 61 in the prospective study). Anorectal manometry an

Effect of biofeedback-assisted relaxation training on foot ulcer healing.

A prospective, randomized study was conducted to determine the effect of biofeedback-assisted relaxation training on foot ulcer healing. For patients with chronic nonhealing foot ulcers, medical care was combined with a standardized biofeedback-assisted relaxation training program in the experimental group. The intervention was designed to increase peripheral perfusion, thereby promoting healing. A total of 32 patients with chronic nonhealing ulcers participated in the study. In the experimental group, 14 out of 16 ulcers (87.5%) healed, as compared with 7 out of 16 ulcers (43.8%) in the contr

Comparative efficacy of behavioral interventions in the management of female urinary incontinence. Continence Program for Women Research Group.

OBJECTIVE: We compared the efficacy of bladder training, pelvic muscle exercise with biofeedback-assisted instruction, and combination therapy, on urinary incontinence in women. The primary hypothesis was that combination therapy would be the most effective in reducing incontinent episodes. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized clinical trial with three treatment groups was conducted in gynecologic practices at two university medical centers. Two hundred and four women diagnosed with genuine stress incontinence (n = 145) and/or detrusor instability (n = 59) received a 12-week intervention program (6 wee

Pulmonary arterial hypertension induced by distention of the main pulmonary artery in conscious newborn, young, and adult sheep.

Distention of the main pulmonary artery by balloon inflation in sheep results in presumably reflex elevation of pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance distal to the balloon. This response to main pulmonary artery distention is significantly greater in newborn lambs than in older lambs or adult sheep. In several of the newborn lambs, pulmonary artery pressure was raised to suprasystemic levels. Further, in some of the newborn animals, these increases in pulmonary artery pressure and resistance were sustained after deflation of teh balloon for periods up to 2 hr. The functional significance

Effect of coordination biofeedback on (re)learning preferred postural patterns in post-stroke patients.

After stroke, ankle-hip coordination during stance is characterized by changes in the postural system dynamics, specifically the disappearance of the in-phase pattern and the reduced stability of the anti-phase pattern. This study was conducted to assess the success of a coordination visual biofeedback for the (re)learning of the two preferred patterns, and to explore the effect of this treatment on postural and functional abilities. Twenty four patients were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups or to a control group. During one month, patients from experimental groups followed

Use of multiple-site performance-contingent SEMG reward programming in pediatric rehabilitation: a retrospective review.

We completed a retrospective review of the effectiveness of multi-site, performance-contingent reward programming on functional change in motor performance of 16 treatment resistant children. Patients were previously treated in physical or occupational therapy for head control, standing balance training, sitting and upper extremity use (brachial plexus injury). They then participated in a program that utilized multiple surface electromyography sites the use of which was rewarded with videos for performing the correct constellation of recruitment pattern (e.g., contracting some muscles while re

A practical guide to the diagnosis and management of fecal incontinence.

Many physicians are unaware that fecal incontinence is often correctable. With appropriate and relevant diagnostic tests, medical treatment and/or surgical correction often leads to good functional results. General guidelines for diagnosis, evaluation, and management of fecal incontinence are provided. There are many causes of fecal incontinence, with obstetrical trauma being one of the most frequent. A detailed history, documentation of sphincter injury, and thorough physical examination will identify the cause of the problem in most patients. Management involves the use of antidiarrheal medi
